I think it'd be interesting to leave those lifting point holes in the frame even after the restoration, as a bit of it's history. Also, lifting points are useful for a machine that size.

Lawrie can I just tell you why this happened.....its because your presentation is such a great watch. Every time. Whether on your own or with your mates. May I also add a particular bit of feedback you may be surprised at..... I assist a chap locally once a week who is 100% blind. This doesn't stop him being a keen rail enthusiast, and he has a 100ft gauge 1 garden railway too. But what you may not realise is your audio description when you do pre start / firing/ driving videos actually works amazingly for the blind. You describe everything well and you are a good speaker.
So a big thank you from Peter and myself.

Desr Lawrie! I know this feeling! I had it every time we did a small diesel working vehicle just saving from the cutting torch. In Würzburg/Germany we loaded 3 vehicles and then went to the other side of the station, where the others had been already cut in parts to get some spareparts for ours. But the greatest adventure we had in the following time! We went home with two vehicles upon the functional other 2 and then returned on the mainline, about 100km to Hanau/Main with maximal speed (about 60km/h), with only 3 stops on the siding! That was my best railroad- adventure until now ! ! !

Just a thought. This engine is probably missing a lot of bespoke parts that will no doubt be hard, if not impossible to find. Perhaps you could find a similar engine that is complete, then photograph and measure the missing parts off that, and then post that information somewhere.
Because i'd be willing to bet your community is full of my fellow shed-dwellers that could manufacture a lot of those missing parts. For instance i used to work as both a welder and blacksmith in my youth, have restored a bunch of vehicles in my years (currently i'm doing a 65 Caddy CDV, a Mk1.5 Transit bus and a 205 GTI) and i'd love to make something for this machine and send it to you for free. Bet i'm not alone in that either.
Maybe it's a logistically dumb idea. But it would be awesome! Anyway thanks for doing this restoration! Preserving and learning history is important, and fun!

From the way that the loco had stayed in the scrapyard for so long, and that scrapyards only make money by breaking scrap down and selling it for recycling, or selling items whole for re-use, it would seem that the owner of the scrapyard didn't really want to break it up and was always hoping that someone would buy it. Otherwise the loco would have been broken up and recycled many years ago. So well done to the scrapyard owner for keeping it around long enough for it to be bought for restoration.
