I think the series definitely peaked at 4. Five was still fun but It had really low replay value, despite That it's in a genre where replay value is basically a requirement. Six is definitely a big improvement over five but I really hope that for 7 they return to the form factor of 4
@@andyhoughton5520 Tropico 4 focused a lot more on micromanagement. Like in Tropico 5 and 6, each building has a budget with five options, but in Tropico 4, there is wages and rent that you can completely control. And also in tropico four, it really felt like you were the dictator of an island. It felt a lot less limited in the things you could do, and again it really felt like it was your island. The time period also started in 1950 and just went on till you stopped, instead of starting in like the 17th century, which made it feel a lot more immersive.
Tropico 1 was my favorite. Visually, tropico 1 still holds up and has a lot of charm to it because of its cartoony design. I think it’s because none of the models are 3D but rather they are flat drawings with 4 sides to them. The models that are 3D, such as the freighters and airplanes, are pretty rough looking lol
It’s a timeless classic. Got the fame as a demo from a gaming magazine.. allowed me to play till something like the year 1980 or something. Certain buildings like the sports arena etc and major power plants weren’t able to be purchased unless you brought the game. Which I did.. one of my personal favourites of all time!!
Tropico 4 was my first, was hyped for Tropico 5 then it was pretty disappointing, removed buildings, weird graphics. Tropico 6 was definitely an improvement over Tropico 5 in pretty much every way. Think Tropico 4 is probably still the better game imo, Tropico 3 is Tropico 4 but with less polish. The issue I have with the two modern games is the constitution system combined with the time periods, over time certain factions will become strong and in order to continue to be stable you have to appeal to them specifically, or they you can just socially engineer everyone too easily and ensure you remain in power. If they gave us the option to start with every faction like in Tropico 4 and remove the time period mechanic it would make Tropico 6 a lot better. At any rate you can get Tropico 3, 4, 5, 6 with the DLC right now on Humble Bundle for $12. To me that is easily worth it. Never owned 3 and 6 before now.
I played 6 first and loved it (been playing it again recently). While I don't think 4 is as good game play wise, I think it's more atmospheric than 6. It has such a gritty, dingy look that feels like an actual place whereas 6 is a little too cartoony. And I wish 6 had as many options for decorating your city 5 I just couldn't get into. It felt weird to me

@@podomuss I preferred 3 to 4. Not sure if that's because I was going off the genre or found the slight change in graphics less impressive than disconcerting (3's just felt nicer to me, despite being a bit less technically pretty), but I didn't enjoy it as much. Looking back, there are a couple of details in 1 that are lacking (wages etc. don't have numbers next to them, which makes judging exactly what you are paying at a glance harder, and going back to fixed isometric angles rather than being able to rotate the camera with full freedom is always hard) but I think it had the most charm of all of them. I don't think I ever liked the voice over phrases and music as much in any version after the first game. EDIT: Just reinstalled 4 and I think what put me off last time I played was the info panel you see when you click on a citizen and the extra detail in the almanac (in T3 you can find individual citizens in the almanac sorted by job, faction etc.), I prefer Tropico 3 in these respects. Unfortunately in the process of a couple of house moves in the last decade I've thrown a lot of old games away, and didn't retain Tropico 1 or 3.
I think every tropico is great and they all have things that I like and dislike about them. One thing I wish tropico would introduce is modding support. It would be great to see what the community could come up with in the way of buildings so at the very least you could get some visual variety. It gets tiring looking at the same tavern over and over again. For the next tropico, I think it would be great if they revisited the pirate era, giving a modern twist to tropico 2.
Tropico 1 and it's expansions had the best music for immersion IMHO. I still hum those songs. Tropico 2's music was great too, but was very "piraty" so humming out of context wasn't so easy.
I don't know about the others, but Tropico 3 and 4 are based on Cuba rather than Mexico. Everything from the music and the architecture to the politics is a parody of Cuba
I hate how Tropico 6 tries to ape other city building games, for example, I am so disappointed by the tropicans of Tropico 6, they look so robotic, soulless and all look the same, like citizens in other city-building games. Tropico 4 citizens were quite natural had unique walks and were not just some random poorly designed characters just placed there for aesthetic purpose.
Tropico 1-6 is a really good example of art style vs. graphics. Of course, the graphics in Tropico 6 are the best. But the art style is so ugly. In Tropico 3, even though the graphics are way worse, the art style is sooo good that I prefer it over Tropico 6. Tropico 3 just looks better. Please let them do a good art style in tropico 7. That would be amazing with todays graphics technology.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up. The path they’ve been taking since 4 has been essentially the same. We’re just going to get another Anno clone. I don’t think we’ll ever get another real Tropico game.
I hear people say Tropico 4 is the best one... Some say Tropico 3 is the best one... others say that 1/2 are the best simply out of nostalgia. I've never really heard anyone say 5 or 6 are the best, just ''good''.
Little late but I played both 5 - 6 and although they are lovely and fun to play I can’t help but not enjoy myself with the many little things I noticed in the 3-4 games of the serous.
