Very weird for reviewers to admit they don't know the theme, and then critique the game based on it's theme. This isn't the in depth research I expect from the Dice Tower after I give them my money through their Kickstarter. If a reviewer says the theme doesn't match, I expect them to have researched what the subject matter is about. The theme fits perfectly.
As a fan of the lore of this world, I am very excited for this game. Anyone who knows this world will not be expecting a shooty combat focused game.
I love the genre of cyberpunk but have never played this video game or the TRPG. I enjoyed the theme, but the “cleanness” of the design sings more. Besides small quibbles with graphic design, this game was a big hit with my game group. I do need to get the rest of the expansions for it, though.
I love this one a lot- and it’s fun seeing the wide variety of opinions on this one! I’m digging the C’MON method of plug and play these days- the stories that mechanical plug and change the whole game experience I think is neato

Agreed with a lot of what they said, except for the final scores of Chris and Joey. This game is great! However, the added expansions really add to this experience. Too bad that so many of them were KS exclusives.
CMON scuttled the retail copy with the lack of content. There's no point in buying this one.
I love the Godfather so this is perfect for me

This is, unfortunately, a case where ALL the expansion really flesh this out.
Yes, if you don’t know the world/IP well, this theme really feel skinned on… and they could twist some mechanics to up it… but the game is smooth and functional, and as Zee said - all the parts are fun. And like any Erik Lang design, the tactical depth really opens up once you dig in.
I'm a fan of the rpg source books. I'm a fan of the video game, and obviously fan of board games. I'm the exact target audience here, and the game just misses on theme so hard. Who wants to play the gangs in night city? Game would've been way more captivating if it was an asymmetric game of corpos vs. Edgerunners.
Whelp if 2 player works, you can already live that out through Android Netrunner.
I feel the same way, at the very least should've been more along the lines of the Witcher adventure game.
Chris - Board Games with lines of cards or contracts or whatever being in the wrong place is common. It's everywhere. Dune Imperium is a great example. If you aren't close to the Imperial Row, you have to get up often. It's just the way it is. I'm not sure you can lower a game's rating because of that. Mosaic, Foundations of Rome, etc. Board Game after Board Game.
Thanka for the comment. I see your point, it's not uncommon. But sometimes a game merits that extra effort and sometimes it doesn't. Foundations of Rome is a prime example where my score was lowered because of visibility issues affecting the game. I frequently see players losing their markers behind those massive miniatures. I also understand that bothers me more than others, but production choices like that affect my score the same way flimsy cardboard pieces affect other peoples'.
This game is solid!!! Way better than a 6.5 score… Solid 8 for sure.
The Godfather is one of my favorite game. Joey said this was a better game and yet he only gave it a 6.5… makes my heart a bit sad.😂

I wish they did this theme, but Scarface 1910 mechanisms. I'm tired of mafia theme, but Scarface mechanisms are just doing this kind of thing SO MUCH better
Love the dune bucket in the background. That's the real win of this video.
I feel some people in the comments are a bit harsh with their criticism around theme (which seems to be the big negative of both Chris and Joey for rating the game a bit lower). I personally don't care about theme that much as long as the game is actually fun to play, but I also don't play a 100+ new games a year. I can only assume at one point that most game feels same-y and theme can be that little flavor / personality that would make the difference.
I haven't played my copy yet, but for me, the game looks like a medium weight game with decent depth, but minimal rules overhead. This is exactly what I am looking for and I hope it's as fun to play as it looks. I've gone through my gateway phase straight to heavy board game... Now, I would much prefer to play fun medium weight game that takes 10-15min to teach and minimal setup.
Too bad most of the expansion seems necessary and were Kickstarter exclusive. I've already pulled the fixer power from BGG and proxied the vehicles as it felt like these should have been part of the base game.
Tacking on a theme when you are using a popular IP is worth the criticism. Because if you aren't paying respects, why use the IP? Simply to make everyone hyped up for it.
Thanks for going through the game guys. I already know that it's not the type of game my gaming group would enjoy, but the production values seem pretty high.
I like the godfather, its a fun game. Either theme is fine for me. The godfather can be acquired easily for less than $40. In short, I would need to commit intellectual suicide to pick this one up.

Joey and Chris were too hard on the game re:theme. I've seen you guys be way better on other euros that had a tacked on theme.
I think it's because they expected more theme out of it whereas in euros they're used to it.
It's because it's not an euro, it's a hybrid.
When you borrow from a well known IP, tacking the theme on is less forgivable.
@TheBrokenMeeple Fair. However, if you've played the video game, the theme is pretty apparent. I think some people have their minds made up about what cyberpunk means without having played the video game. There are lots of mechanisms that directly relate to the theme of the video game.
If only there was another, more thematic Cyberpunk game in the making... ;)
In an era where great games often don't have any themes at all, I don't get the focus on theme, in this review, for that particular game. Cyberpunk 2077 is simple to teach, flows well and looks good on a table. Is it a classic? Probably not but it is a very good product. I'm with Zee on the rating.
Was very curious about this.
The story cards make the game interesting. Without them it’s pretty much a mediocre area control game.
It’s easy to learn, combat is nice and quick. Ive played it 5 times so far and I don’t mind it actually.
The problem though is that scenario cards are a random spice onto mediocre meatballs. Sure it's better, but they're still mediocre meatballs.

Look I wasn’t excited about the game either but decided to get it in the end because I like the IP.
I figured I’d get it, play it few times and if I didn’t like it I’d sell it.
For me it’s a game to play in an hour, not complicated for my family to play.

@@nihlify no one is saying that. But with any IP, experience and enjoyment of that IP absolutely directly influences the game.
Take Anno 1800. It's a heavy efficiency euro. It's a great game in its own right... but those games aren't my jam. But I love the board game specifically because I played a lot of the video game and the thematic ties helped me overcome what normally is dry beige that holds no interest.
To discount the influence your enjoyment of an IP has over ANY product with that IP is... short sighted at least.

I haven't seen or heard any evidence that would prove that out. Even if it did though, Netrunner has honestly never been in a better state than it is currently. NSG has really found their groove and have done a great job with getting a healthy competive meta going again after the terrible state that FFG had gotten us to during the Mumbad years.

WotC pulled the Cyberpunk license from FFG and gave it to CMoN. Eric Lang was also working on a Cyberpunk card game.
Android Netrunner died many years ago. Fantasy Flight killed it off. Nothing to do with Cyberpunk 2077 or CMON.
@@andyreynolds6473 Cyberpunk is separate from Android Netrunner. Totally different game worlds, completely unrelated, totally different origins.
The theme is there. Just because you are unfamiliar with the source material is not the games fault, that is your own fault. This game is designed for fans of the video game. If you don't have the experience with the video game, I think the game is going to be a miss.
If you are a fan of the video, I think you'll appreciate the game world being in a board game.
It's not the Cyberpunk 2077 game I wanted, but it is mostly definitely true to the world, and far better than a 6.5 and closer to an 8.0. Glad at last Zee was the voice of reason here.

Zee is the one I'm usually most interested to hear from. NOT because if he rates something a 10 then I know I will love a game. It's because he seems more able to describe the feel of a game or how he feels playing it. It allows me to better gauge my own interest.
I know he was already a fan of the setting but putting the effort in to try the Videogame, kudos!
I pay particular attention to Chris' comments. I find he's very good at providing perspective e.g. if the others have been rehashing a particular point for a while, he'll step back to put it in the context of the game, helping you understand why that point might or might not be significant for you
@thedicetower I think there's definitely something to be said about how familiar you are with the theme... and the theme here not just being cyberpunk in general, but of the actual videogame source.
That this loses points for not being 'cyberpunky' but with no reference to the actual source in the videogame, seems a bit of a disconnect.
I played a ton of Shadowrun and Cyberpunk tabletop RPG back in the day. This game doesn't hit on that experience in any way. It is just a street gang game? Hard pass.
Depends. Do you like area control ? Conflict? Then this game is good. If you're looking for a game to replicate the rpgs, then yeah, probably not for you.
some comments says its like the godfather, i agree the map/style layout alone is very similar, area control play a card. Really looks like a re-skin of the godfather
@@dcrbdhI do like area control games with conflict. But I also care about theme. The theme hurts so bad that I cannot get past it to the mechanics. Even if it was a great game, I would struggle to enjoy playing it.

Making a game that uses one of the most immersive settings ever and not doing justice to the theme or making it feel like the IP is basically auto-kil for me. I don't want a game that's tricking me constantly with a IP to get me to play it.
Except the theme does come through. Just say you don't like CMON instead of pretending like there is an issue with the game.

Even the reviewers commented that the theme wasn't super strong! Are you going to make the same claim to them to be fair in your assessment or shall I invent something for you in the same manner?
@@TheBrokenMeeple The reviewers admitted they didn't know the theme well. So there comments on the theme not being there doesn't hold any weight. Where as the people familiar with the subject matter agree that the theme is present. But it's ok - cherry pick all you want while pretending to be objective :)

It's perfectly thematic (to the game Cyberpunk 2077), it's fair to say that you don't understand or know anything about the theme at all. Sorry but you are objectively wrong to complain about theme since you speak from a perspective of total ignorance.
The game looks fun but not worth the price they're asking.
Ultimately what stopped me backing. Loved everything about it, and I really love The Godfather, but the backer price plus shipping was ridiculous.
Not surprised to hear the theme and mechanics don't mesh, IIRC this game is pretty much a reskin of The Godfather game from CMON...
Joey says it's better than the Godfather, and then gives it a lower score.

I believe it is possible to be a "better game" and also not have as much fun/enjoyment. So I can see how someone might score a game lower.
