I've lived long enough to see "Lunar" go from being a big freaking deal in the gaming world to a forgotten relic kids today know nothing about. So this is what being old feels like, eh?
Was it ever a "big freaking deal" though? I wish that was true. I've recently seen one of my favorite games of all time being remade 25 years later (SMRPG) I really hope the same thing for Lunar and everyone knows about it. If there's a game that truly deserves a resurge it's Lunar and imo it was always underrated anyway.
@@silverhoney6969 Maybe play on an emulator with a fast forward button? I put a ROM on my DS Lite long ago, but I don't remember getting more than like 5 minutes into it before saying "yeah this isn't Lunar" and quitting.
Still remember playing these games in high school. Man these are such great games. Its so sad they've been forgotten. I feel like I might like the Eternal Blue better than the first!

I rented Lunar for the Sega CD in the early 90's at Blockbuster.. it was my very first JRPG. To say the very least it change my life (not sure for better though, :))
Damn it why can't we get a Switch port or SOMETHING?! This series was so vibrant and dramatic! I swear the damn thing helped me learn what a good redemption arc looks like. Pretty sure they were giving them away in the latter half of Eternal Blue.
If a switch port ever came out it be of silver again for the nostalgia effect with a HD remaster that honestly would sell very poorly. What they need to do is give lunar silver a complete remake in 3D format in today’s graphics and it would sell like hotcakes in the same fashion ff7 remake sold but loads even if the combat system was utter trash
I always loved the Lunar series, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete on the Ps1 got me into collecting video games back in the day so I will always have an appreciation for the series.

Just started playing Lunar 2 again on my PS3 superslim and finished the the new Lunar game on my PS Vita. Be nice to see both games cleaned up for the PS4 or PS5

Hey man, thanks for all these awesome What the HELL vids. I was recently thinking about Alundra, Lunar and Grandia and getting an emu to play them. Very interesting vids! Makes me want to play through them even more now.
To anyone reading. I have made a fair amount of fan story premise for a lunar 3 having Nall as main protagonist making it his story of in between lunar 1 and 2 dealing with loss finding new friends and growing as in dragon years an early 20 something anyone willing to read ill send it to. Things id like from fans as I hope to send to game arts as a package to make a sequle would be a someone who can write a compelling villian and ending keeping the Dalbec name and mythos in tact as is a canadian folklore, any sort of concept art for before and after the armor upgrade, a translation to Japanese maybe some test code of a battle simulation. I believe octopath traveler opened up a path for an rpg in 8bit 1080p and I believe a lunar 3 is right for that role if done right. We as fans need to show them what we want and are interested in. I am not looking to make profit in anyway. onlything id as for is a free copy of the completed game for anyone who worked on the project.

I'd heard about some of what you went over, but I definitely learned something today :) I have All in Lunar and randomly collected a Korean LSSSC PC version as well, I've been fortunate to be a long time fan so I have a large collection of rare stuffs. I've played all the games, and I very much agree that Dragon Song/Genesis by comparison is easily the worst. The battle system was the worst POS ever, though I did really like the artwork and BGM. Those two elements captured the spirit of Lunar, but everything else ... eh, not so much. I first played the Original, LTSS on Sega CD back in the mid 90s on my Sega CD after my dad rented it from blockbuster and I stole it from him haha Are you over on the LunarNET forums? That whole site is an amazing monument to Lunar.

Good video. Despite being a poor kid and not a rich kid I picked up a segacd in my childhood cuz some other rich kid traded it for something lame. Shoetly after I got lunar and holy DUNG was that game way ahead of its time. People liked it on the ps1, imagine having a version with way better music many years in advance? I still make Ghaleon my main username for everything because of lunar. I just love how he is an antagonist who wasn't actually evil in the end. Very rare back then. Despite this he was basically better than sephiroth at everything. I mean he steals the heros girlfriend and turns her into a goddess. Who does that?
I played Dragon Song when I still used my DS daily. I loved the way the battles looked (like the camera view and stuff) and the art style was pretty nice too. Sucks that with how bad it was, it may have been shovelware.
Thankfully the same doesn't happen to Victor Int./Marvelous with their Bokujo Monogatari (aka Harvest Moon). As usual (this kind of thing happens OFTEN), publisher gets greedy and want to take over the brand license. We already see many samples of how those publishers can't make the game and trashed the series instead... I guess the loss of one of the founder really hit hard.
Lunar was a series that just kept getting passed around to see if interest good be drummed up for it, and each and every time it flopped, intial momentum started with the "complete" releases, which while labors of love, were very niche, they sold well enough to not make it a lost venture but not enough to garner a full fledged sequel. Also most of the staff don't want anything to do with it, thanks internal termoil

I was literally just wondering which version of lunar 2 to play. The opening on sega cd with the hands crushing a planet into a bloody mess looked badass and the ps1 version doesn't have it. Leaning towards sega for that alone tbh. Any thoughts on the better version to play? Also I read that at release Lunar 2 was more expensive than most, so that could've had something to do with sales. Unsure.
Go segacd. The music is better. Sounds subjective but the thing is it just had more channels and instruments or whatever. Segacd lunar music is a masterpiece, and the ps1 version is just kinda good. Also magic exp is fun. Some people hate it becausr you need it to save, but the cost becomes trivial before long amd being able to select what spells and abilities you level up over time (and upgrade their animations too) was really cool. Plus I forget, did the ps1 version even have the epilogue with the star dragon? Probably did but for some reason i think they messed with it somehow... or maybe they skipped his fight on that mountain early game... or did they just nerf it so he cant confuse. Lol I forget. I totally suggest segacd though, no contest.

Why did Working Design pull all copies from the stores at the end of the year? I remember that, but luckily I had a friend who had and didn't want the game.
So what's going on with dot.hack ... I mean that new final chapter has raised some interesting points. If you played it you could smell the saturation in hints to a new game. Witch means a new anamie and manga. God trying to understand the story of the anamie or manga is hard without the game heck the games are fine with out it but better.
Europe no! No Earthbound, no Final Fantasy 'till7. I hated living in here in the 90's. I get it, I'm a second class person but those games were something else. Got Lunar and FF6 afterwards. Before I just played on an emulator.
Maybe sequels aren't as successfully. However Empire Strikes Back is the best Star wars movie it goes 5-4-6-2-3-1 too bad they STOPPED making new star wars movies it's pretty sad.

What the **** would the gender of a lobster dragon alien be. ... at least on my hate list for ridiculous difficult bosses then again I was playing lufia 3 ? On my GBA so I was what 12? Maybe 15 ? I don't know it was a long time ago and I really didn't care about the way I played in those years I kinda half assed the whole game 15 lvs under and randomly boosted stats or did I even use stat boasts now that I think about it that was around my phobia of stat boasting items for some reason I got it in my head that they do nothing and just give you the next point you would have gotten from leveling up and I really skimped on healing items and weapons never used steal either no that I think about how was I actually able to get to the final boss like that no wonder it was so hard. (Btw if you never played lufia you should just don't do the ds one it might be the easiest to track down but that's because I've met people willing to sell you they're organs to get rid of it literally I was in a game stop and a guy in a trench coat tried to give it to me wean I said no he opened his trench coat to his necked torso pulled out a scalpel and offered me a lung, kidney and a few other organs to take the game after refusing he slipped it into my pocket as leaving I knew it was bad from my experience but seriously who does that. Ugh anyway the funniest thing about the ds version is you can suicide Yourself to lv.99 because if you die by any means you can start at the last checkpoint with 5 lv ups for absolutely no consequences you could literally jump off map till you're lv 99 in the Tutorial dungeon so basically you can start out at max lv.

Lunar will NEVER die! The SSSC was the only rpg that made me cry in the end....Beautiful game....Great Story, voice acting and music....This game will live on in my heart forever!
As a huge Lunar fan, I highly recommend the PSP remake, “Lunar: Silver Star Harmony”. In my opinion, it is one of the best versions of the original game. I only wish that “Eternal Blue” had gotten the same love and treatment.
Very late response I know. I've played the original on the MegaCD, Playstation, GameBoy Advance, and the PSP. The latter is by far my favourite version of the game. Yes the loading between each screen can be irritating but the soundtrack, visuals, and voice acting all make up for that. Weirdly I've found that most people consider the PSP version to be the worst version of the game.
@@voteDC I couldn't get past the battles in the PSP version, they were awful. It played completely differently because of the weird zoomed-in rendering.
@@clanpsi If you don't like the zoom on the PSP version then I advise never trying the GBA version where that is even greater. That being said the zoom never bothered me on either of the portable versions of the game. It is a necessary evil given the size of their screens.
The PSP version is fantastic in all regards except one and if you can deal with it or not notice it the better. The battles pause a little when using a special attack or magic spell. I got all the way to the part where Kyle breaks free of his stone form to save the team before I noticed. I stopped at the blue dragon cave because it bothered me so much.
Thats so unfair, I really wanted a Lunar 3. I wonder if we can get the games released as a compilation or something on steam. Anything so this great series or its music isnt forgotten forever...
Damn shame,this series had alot of potential. Simple concepts but heartwarming stories,like a fairytale. I also remember the cool extras that working designs was packing with the limited edition,like the cloth map of the game
I have the exact same thought. I've played every main entry Final Fantasy to date, except 11, and 13, and 10 was the last one that maintained the high level of excellence that the series had been known for.

lunar 1 and 2 are one the most beautiful RPG'S ever made.

Lunar sssc was such an experience.

The only version I played was the Sega CD version the ports just didn't feel the same at all. The Sega CD version will always be my favorite.

Overwhelming majority of Lunar fans all preferred the vastly superior Sega CD Versions. The PSX Remakes killed the franchise for crying out loud lol

Moon means Luna, without the R at the end. Lunar means mole and it is also used to describe the phenomena of the moon (lunar eclipse, for example).

(Btw if you never played lufia you should just don't do the ds one it might be the easiest to track down but that's because I've met people willing to sell you they're organs to get rid of it literally I was in a game stop and a guy in a trench coat tried to give it to me wean I said no he opened his trench coat to his necked torso pulled out a scalpel and offered me a lung, kidney and a few other organs to take the game after refusing he slipped it into my pocket as leaving I knew it was bad from my experience but seriously who does that. Ugh anyway the funniest thing about the ds version is you can suicide Yourself to lv.99 because if you die by any means you can start at the last checkpoint with 5 lv ups for absolutely no consequences you could literally jump off map till you're lv 99 in the Tutorial dungeon so basically you can start out at max lv.
I've only played SSSC for the original playstation. I hated Nash from the start to finish. Douchebag lol.

The playstation versions of lunar 1 and 2 were some of my favorites
mine too i still own my copies and i still got my lunar sssc medalion

Lunar will NEVER die! The SSSC was the only rpg that made me cry in the end....Beautiful game....Great Story, voice acting and music....This game will live on in my heart forever!
As a huge Lunar fan, I highly recommend the PSP remake, “Lunar: Silver Star Harmony”. In my opinion, it is one of the best versions of the original game. I only wish that “Eternal Blue” had gotten the same love and treatment.
Very late response I know. I've played the original on the MegaCD, Playstation, GameBoy Advance, and the PSP. The latter is by far my favourite version of the game. Yes the loading between each screen can be irritating but the soundtrack, visuals, and voice acting all make up for that.
Weirdly I've found that most people consider the PSP version to be the worst version of the game.
@@voteDC I couldn't get past the battles in the PSP version, they were awful. It played completely differently because of the weird zoomed-in rendering.
@@clanpsi If you don't like the zoom on the PSP version then I advise never trying the GBA version where that is even greater.
That being said the zoom never bothered me on either of the portable versions of the game. It is a necessary evil given the size of their screens.
The PSP version is fantastic in all regards except one and if you can deal with it or not notice it the better. The battles pause a little when using a special attack or magic spell. I got all the way to the part where Kyle breaks free of his stone form to save the team before I noticed. I stopped at the blue dragon cave because it bothered me so much.

Thats so unfair, I really wanted a Lunar 3. I wonder if we can get the games released as a compilation or something on steam. Anything so this great series or its music isnt forgotten forever...
Damn shame,this series had alot of potential. Simple concepts but heartwarming stories,like a fairytale. I also remember the cool extras that working designs was packing with the limited edition,like the cloth map of the game
Lunar 2 is my first RPG game and it will be in my heart for eternity. That game is so good tbh.

Zophar is a more compelling villain than Ghaleon, even..and in 2nd, we get ..well, wnt say.

I have the exact same thought. I've played every main entry Final Fantasy to date, except 11, and 13, and 10 was the last one that maintained the high level of excellence that the series had been known for.
