Georgios-Spyridon Athanasopoulos and Allan McRobie (University of Kent & University of Cambridge) present their work on 3D graphic statistics.
This paper expands the 3D graphic statics description for frames by utilizing the conjugate beam method as a graphical process for the determination of deflections for elastic beams. This method is being investigated here with its novel application into the full description for 3D frames and thus, it can allow for deflections in different directions for non-planar bending moment diagrams, given that the loading does not create torsion. Furthermore, a visual interpretation of the principle of virtual work is given for the case of beams under point loads as a result of the graphical-geometric integration of the method.
