Sense and Sensibility is 100% one of my favourites from Austen! I'm so excited to pick up Braiding Sweetgrass, I know it's not your favourite but it seems like it's going to be perfect for me! Spirit Abroad! Such a good short story collection!! And no surprise that we're finishing with a Sierra Simone!! 💙💙💙
I'm glad we're in agreement on the best of Austen's books. I think you'll like Braiding Sweetgrass much more than I did as it does sound perfect for you 🌿
I absolutely LOVE sense and sensibility!! But I find it so funny that we seem to love it for different reasons! I am such a Marianne and I read the book in the aftermath of a dreadful break up. I found it so validating that throughout literature and history there were girls crying in their bedrooms, and perhaps being quite irrational about it, and it gave me such hope that all would eventually be okay!
It’s great when there is more than one reason to love something! I’m glad it found you just when you needed it through that break up 🥹💛 and yes!! It’s amazing how relatable it is even after all these years
I have to continue on with reading Jane Austen books! I read Pride and prejudice, Emma and Mansfield park so far. Braiding sweetgrass sounds very important and a book I should try reading. I don’t usually read nature books either That cover of dreadful is so pretty!! Glad to hear you liked it
So interesting to hear your thoughts on Toni Morrison, I do know exactly what you mean about her craft! Ooh really liked your thoughts on motherhood and nature in Braiding Sweetgrass - not something I had really thought about while reading it but definitely agree with you.
Her writing is almost magical! I am really looking forward to reading my way through all her works. Only a few deep so far. And I'm glad you reading braiding sweetgrass too and can see what I meant 🌿🍃
Thank you for the great reviews! I’ve been on the fence about Godkiller, but your reflections on it have made me want to give it a go at some point (just as soon as I get through the million books I already need to read 😅)
I’ve heard mostly negative things about Godkiller but now I’m intrigued! And Dreadful sounds so good. Comedic fantasy is a hard sell for me too but this one sounds like it did a great job
In some ways Godkiller is your run of the mill fantasy, but it had moments of uniqueness that really shone through for me! And I really recommend Dreadful - I still think about it 😚
Glad you enjoyed Godkiller too. I must get around to reading the sequel. I was interested to hear what you thought of braiding sweet grass. It’s been quite divisive in reviews. Sounds like it’s worth a read. The best nature writing book I’ve read recently was the essay collection Gathering, Women Of Colour On Nature.
I do think braiding sweetgrass is worth reading even if it is just to see what you make of it yourself 🌿 Ooh, I am excited to get to sunbringer as well!
I don't think I'll pick up Godkiller purely because me and fantasy are not vibing this year but it sounds so good and like it has fantastic rep! Plus it is gorgeous so I am tempted hahaha!
Firstly, that hair! You always have fantastic hair, but today is particularly gorgeous. I'm sorry you didn't like Maame. You're review served as a little reminder to me to not just read Black authors, but to listen to Black reviewers too. I guess that's because publishing filters by what sells. Great set of reviews as always.
Thank you 😌 😇 I do think I was a bit harsh - I’m feeling just a tad frustrated with Black literary books overall because at the moment I’m finding Black genre fiction is telling much more interesting and unique stories instead of the same things again. But that said, I do think the second half of it was much better and if her next book channels more of that kind of writing, I’d be up for reading it too!
FIRST of all, your hair 😍 that pink suits you so well and I adore the high pony. Second of all, as always, your takes on Austen are impeccable. It’s been so long since I’ve read Sense and Sensibility, so I’ll have to do that before checking out the liveshow. I saw the author of Godkiller at Worldcon on a panel and she made it sound really good, but your mini review has sealed the deal on it for me! Always exciting when an author can pack so much into a story when there’s others writing meandering, empty books (SJM, anyone? 🫢) So glad you’re enjoying your Morrison journey. Can confirm that all her books are made for revisiting, getting new nuance every single time, and being read s l o w l y. I love how you talked about Greenwild and SuperGhost-so mindful of the intended audience while also making space for your own feelings about them! Sierra Simone needs to teach a class in developing anticipation, both diegetically and in the meta/reader space!!
Thank you so much! It's bridesmaids hair for my sister's wedding :) Yess, Sense and Sensibility is well worth the reread! So cool that you got to see Hannah at a panel. I do highly recommend Godkiller :) And I'm looking forward to reading more Toni Morrison soon as well. Thank you 🌸
Dreadful sounds a lot like my sort of thing, I love when stuff can strike that balance between funny and meaningful!
Ooh, then definitely get Dreadful! It was honestly so good 😇
Yay Sense and Sensibility! The sister feels in that one are impeccable
They truly are the best 💚
Godkiller rep was well done
Love the colours on spirits abroad
Dreadful was fun
Spirits abroad has such a gorgeous cover and I much prefer it to the US one. I'm looking forward to seeing what caitlin rozakis writes next 😊
I never hear anyone talking about Lily Chu but I’m so intrigued by her!
I love her books! The Stand-In is the perfect place to start with her books 💫
I'm now even more excited to get to Godkiller!
Yess, it's so good!
Dreadful sounds like a fun time! I'm definitely interested in picking that up now.
It’s such a fun read and I think you could like that one! Low gore and violence, high fun vibes 😌
I won't lie, I've never considered reading Sense and Sensibility, but how you've described it makes me want to give it a go!
It’s a really good one in terms of the romantic drama and sisterhood relationships! Maybe the audiobook would be a good shout for you?

Oh my goodness yes! It puts the fun in the fantasy genre 😄

That's understandable! Tempting is a good place to be meanwhile 😅
I need to read Godkiller, I've heard it recommended by so many people I have similar taste to
Ooh please do! I hope you like it 🌟
