- In this episode of Shoe Shine Sunday, we visit with Eric Jensen of Stefano Bemer. In 2009 Eric Jensen followed his passion to learn the old world tradition of bespoke tailoring, by attending a prestigious school under a celebrated Italian maestro, Luigi Gallo. Eric graduated from Maestro Gallo's school, receiving his Master Tailor certificate, and he spent 4 additional years as an apprentice to tailor Chris Despos in Chicago.
Now located at 475 Park Ave, Eric leads the bespoke division of Stefano Bemer, and is one of the last American-based tailors to carry on the bespoke tradition. He continues the art of tailoring in it's purest form, hand-drafting each client’s unique body pattern and molding canvas to the specific shapes and curves of the body. At least 30,000 strategically placed hand stitches go into the making of each suit.

Really interesting conversation. Many great points by both Kirby and Eric Jensen. As long as you ignore the awkwardness of Kirby shining his shoes as Eric explains things. LOL. It feels like he's ignoring him. I'd have held a single shot on Eric, and cut to the Master when Kirby looks back at him. But, just a small gripe. These shoe shine Sunday's are AWESOME

This is so oddly reassuring. I want to pick up tailoring (first start as a hobby as I juggle with work that pays for me to live to live) and I am 23 now, which I already found a bit old in terms of changing your life course. We have some very good tailors in Romania as well (where I come from), but the problem is most of them are getting old to the point of retiring, and there is not a sufficient number of young people choosing this path to sustain the craft in the future. It's such a shame.

Kirby, with respect, your overuse of "you know" and "i mean" can unnecessarily detract quite a bit from an otherwise superb discussion...

@@kirbyallison First of all, you have my genuine respect for taking this comment as the humble constructive suggestion it was intend as, and not as offense.
As for suggestions, though I still have a ton of flaws in my language, I did manage to cut down significantly on my "um" useage by substituting it for silence, and learning to become comfortable with that silence. Beyond that, I think awareness alone should help a lot?
Again I'd like to reiterate that your speech is far superior to mine, I sincerely just want you to keep putting out these great videos and improve even further.
@@kirbyallison Hey Kirby, If you're really interested and have the time, you could look into joining a local Toastmasters club. It is something I try to do myself and it is excellent. Indeed, it is a habit that requires much effort to break. As usual, your work here with these videos is invaluable, thank you for the effort you put into making them.

Kirby you should really rethink this format. This interview came across poorly in my opinion. You seem extremely distracted and more focused on buffing your shoes than making eye contact and showing proper respect to your guest. I know this absolutely was not your intention but frankly that’s how you came across. Eye contact is a fundamental staple of communication and understanding and many times throughout the conversation your guest was looking at you in search of acknowledgement only to find you feverishly buffing your shoes. This format may work with some guests, but honestly you did yourself a disservice with this interview.
thomas walsh I’m a fan of Kirby’s videos, but I must agree with you here. This would have been a great sit down interview without the shine. I’m not sure Kirby is at fault, however. I get the impression that the guest may not have understood the format of Shoeshine Sunday, as Kirby pointed out the guest arrived in suede shoes. For this format to work, I think the guest must understand the format, show up with shoes to shine, and must have a baseline understanding of how to shine shoes. The episode with Grant from Optimo Hats was equally awkward as he was clearly unsure of what to do. On a positive note, the camera work and lighting here are amazing, and this guest clearly has a remarkable passion for what he does.

I was wondering since I'm from San Diego, who the tailor was that Mr. Jensen started with before heading to Italy? Could you please explain the use of sports coats with what appears to be a half belt in the back waist and the sports shoulder with a extra amount of material in a slot in the back top shoulders. I think this is mostly equestrian and field shooting systems

I looked for him on instagram and it says it can’t be found. That’s strange! I wonder if he is no longer on Insta!???! Is he even online now? Is he under a different name? I don’t know. It’s been two years since this episode has come out. A lot can change it two years. Well I’ll have ti look. But if he isn’t idk what to look him up under would even be? Hey Kirby, what shoes you recommend for driving? Are loafers ideal and better than oxfords??
I kinda like the format and the idea, although it works best when both people are working. It's supposed to be a "parallel play" format in which a lot of men seem to thrive and open up. Kirby's not a professional interviewer (yet) so I'd give him a chance to let it develop over time. Not every one will be a home run. We get the chance to see some awesome guests.
Wow , I wish this had been 3 hours long! I could listen to his stories for many king wonderful hours! I wish I had the financial ability to have a few suits made in the Bespoke way. I would have a three piece proper suit make of dark grey. Pleats and all. Done properly as they speak about all the time on Kirby Allison. A suit I would wear for weddings, Christenings, Christmas Eve, or any place that I needed to be fully dressed to the 9’s. Hopefully I could get a fabric that was very breathable so that I wouldn’t sweat too much. I run warm all the time. I need something to be as breathable as possible. Then next would be a summer suit. Something I could wear to friends homes, parties outside, etc. obviously lightweight and maybe lighter in color. Or maybe a darker to medium dark color jacket and a lighter colored pant if I was doing separates. Otherwise a medium color suit to even a cream one for the summer maybe even a blue or tan. Then I would like a separated jacket and pants that would go together or that I could take them apart and wear the jacket with other pants colors or jeans, etc. same goes with the pants with other shirts and/or jackets. And Fourh, I would want a suit or separates that have a great amount of texture. From the jacket to the pants and tie. A jacket that you can feel the texture and look as if it is let’s say a dark to medium grey but you can see the textile pattern of blue, red, green, etc running back and forth in a hatch pattern. Then a different color pant. Maybe a tweed solid. And a wonderfully textured tie that was completely different that the jacket and pants. I have wanted a very textured outfit since I can remember. Unless I win the lottery I won’t ever be able to buy these suites and outfits. Probably not even off the rack. I don’t think, off the rack, I could find the textured outfit I’ve always wanted. Or really any of these suits I want. Nothing will fit me even close to looking good. I am not a talk stick person. So I always have to buy a suit that is all out of proportion to my body because I’m not anywhere near a standard size. To large for my height. So my jackets fit horribly. The arm holes are so low that they start around my mid rib or lower. No joke. That’s how much larger they wind up grabbing off the rack to put on me to then” tailor” it to fit me. Which simply means taking in the sleeves and hemming the pants. All this terrible fit because I am so not proportioned well. I know this can happen to a lot of people and now that I know more about how suits are suppose to fit properly, I really know that there is no chance I’m hell to even get an off the rack that will ever come close to looking good in me. I know people that are much more slim and the proportions may not be perfect, but they often look much, much, better in an off the rack suit than I ever do because they are more proportioned better than I am. Well here’s to winning the lotto. I better start playing if I ever intend on winning. I hope I get to financially one day be able to have all these suits that I have in my minds eye made for me in the Bespoke way. That would be a dream come true. Cheers

I'm really enjoying shining my shoes along with these videos, but this one was very uncomfortable, but in a wierd kind of way, it was pretty darn funny! There were numerous awkward moments, which were created by Kirby being far more focused on his shoes than Mr. Jensen. That was only trumped by the times when Kirby abruptly, and rudely, cut Mr. Jensen off mid-sentence indicating he had absolutely no interest in what Mr. Jensen was saying. At 43:40, Kirby appeared to have finally hit his boiling point and didn't want to listen to one more full sentence by Mr. Jensen. Do you think Kirby drank too much coffee before this video? Finally, to cap (pardon the pun) it all off, Kirby responded to Mr. Jensen's last story by not even acknowledging it, but instead Kirby stated: "So, I think I'm all done here" ....tooooo funny!

Lovely to listen to, but a bit awkward to watch; I love Mr. Allison's content, but I think you should pay more attention to your host than to your shoe shine routine (I am saying "host", seeing that Mr. Allison is in his host's establishment). That's just my personal perspective, though. Having said that, I thank you for sharing this video!
