    I am afraid one can only learn from one’s own mistakes.

    1st big mistake getting into the hobby in the first place. 😂😅😅

  • @Furniture121
    @Furniture121 4 роки тому +9

    Two big mistakes I have seen(and partially made) are
    1) Thinking you need to buy a watch to "check a box" in some arbitrary collection. I have no need for a dress watch, my everyday diver or pilots watches are more than dressy enough for what I do. I managed to stop myself before spending on a dress watch, but it was close...
    2) Thinking you need to "move up" to a luxury watch. Just because every some dude online tells you anyone can afford a Rolex or Omega doesn't mean you should buy one. When you consider the amount of money tied up in just one part of one hobby, luxury watches make very little sense for the average person. If you really want on go nuts, but don't assume a Rolex, or Omega will "feel" better, or make you feel better, than a Hamilton, Oris, Seiko, etc.. I was saving my pennies for a Tudor BB58, then realized I'd rather an Oris or CW with extra cash in my account for rainy days.

    Number one mistake: Buying a watch and thinking I would never sell it and making up some story in my mind that it was a forever watch that I would pass down to the next generation. Every watch I bought with that noble idea in mind is gone. The two that I bought new without making that prideful proclamation are the ones I have managed to keep. So much for good intentions.

    Hey Guy, your "new" style is good I must say, not that I had anything against the old one. I have always enjoyed your thoroughness, and I am sure that you will continue to do a good job. I think my story is classic, buying a ton of "affordable" watches (vintage, started in 2005 - not much UA-cam advicery ;)) instead of saving up for the grail. Maybe I didnt know then that there WAS a grail for me in the first place. So I have a lot of so-so watches, beautiful 50 year old pieces in wonderful condition, the itch started, and got worse - an itch for a Rolex Datejust. You can probably imagine that all the watches that I had accumulated arent worth what I paid. And what a circus to liquidate them. This year I bought a restored 2005 Datejust and the itch is ALMOST gone ;) I read a comment once from a guy that said that suddenly ANY watch collector will want a Rolex. I laughed at it then... Lastly, I must say that I still enjoy the Chinese Special watches from Pagani, Parnis, Invicta and so on. They are all a part of the watch family :) I am continuously impressed with what they can accomplish, and very interested in the future.

    My biggest mistake occurred before I was really into watches. It combines several of these points. I had four fairly inexpensive watches, purchased over many years, and was perfectly happy with them. A jewelry store opened downtown and I went in with my wife to see if there was anything she would like. They had a bunch of nicely displayed Citizens and one really caught my eye. I tried it on and thought “This is made as well as my wife’s Rolex and costs a hell of a lot less.” So, I paid full MSRP of $475. A similar model (MSRP $495) can now be purchased from the Citizen web-site, on sale, for less than $300. A bunch of mistakes made, but I learned some lessons for a comparatively small amount of money and I was supporting a local business. I now have done enough research to know what most watches I like should cost, so I could make a spur-of-the-moment buying decision. Usually, of course, I spend a fair amount of time researching each individual purchase. I still really like that Citizen and have bought 12 more. That number is only surpassed in my collection by my Casios and Bulovas. “I pity the fool” that gets sucked into the luxury watch hype and over-extends their finances.

    Great list. Speaking for myself beware of buying on credit. I have been very good about only buying a watch if I had the money sit aside or knew I would be the time the credit card bill came due. Recently I broke that rule and bought the new Breitling Navitimer ref 806 1959. I naturally had to have it after all it is a limited edition. Well I didn't have the money situation aside and it was going to be way more than I could pay when the CC bill showed up. I put it on the Ads no interest line of credit for one year. Now I am saddled with a minimum payment of $291. a month. Which if paid for the 12 months will leave me with a hefty balloon payment next year of $4,800. Oh and if it isn't payed for to the penny an exorbitant amount of interest is added. Needless this arrangement I willingly signed on for has very much spoiled the joy of owning the watch. Oh and to make matters worse I signed up for this one month before the Pandemic hit. Moral of the story save up watched are luxury item that shouldn't be bought on credit unless you can pay it off when the bill comes due and even then remember shit happens.

    Some real world issues that have or can affect all of us at one time or another. I have made a couple myself, but mostly it was not first deciding what kind of watch I preferred, it was a field/military style watch. 2nd was not knowing what size watch I really preferred, it turned out to be 36-37mm, and 3rd was manual or automatic, no quartz for me. I found out that I really liked interacting with my watch thence the manual wind was for me. But I also found out that just because it is the type and movement choice doesn't make it thee watch to buy. I am fortunate in that it didn't take me long to figure this out and I was able to move the few watches that didn't fit the bill and not lose my shirt in the process. Thanks a lot Guy for another great video and some real life of watch lessons.

    Going into debt for a watch includes buying a watch that either can't be serviced or repaired (for a vintage watch) or is extremely expensive or difficult to get the repairs or parts. You can get vintage nice-looking watches for a few dollars, but then can't get them serviced, because it runs poorly, or parts (cracked/scratched crystal, loose crown) are not available at any price!

    1. Buying online a Citizen watch and not paying enough attention to things like misaligned chapter rings, dust on the dial before wearing it. I bought one after having it one year in my wishlist, could not ignore the defects, and sent it to customer service for repair 2 weeks ago, within warranty,... I am now told that I will have to wait at least until the end of next month.; 2. Buying a vintage watch without gaskets to keep it watertight. I thought that there would be no problem if I was very careful with water... after half a day, it was full of condensation under the glass; 3. Impulse buys. This has not been a good year... Learning with mistakes, and learning a lot.

    By far my biggest mistake, which I made multiple times, is to buy a watch after a too short while after I saw it, or found out about it. Even after watching multiple reviews it is not nearly enough to know if you would REALLY want it. So my rule lately is to wait at least a few months until purchase, whats reviews, look at tons of pictures, see it in stores, and all of them again and again. If after that I still want it, I buy it, but many times months later I sit wondering :,,Why did I liked it so much, it doesn’t seem that great and that good looking now after I saw it a lot,,

    Hey Guy, so one of the mistakes that I made early on was I bought a Tag Heuer "Indy 500" model back around 2004ish. It was a chrono model and it had the painted on numbers on the fixed bezel. Well after sending the watch back to Tag twice due to the numbers popping off the bezel. One of the times I never even got out of the jewelry store with it before more numbers popped off of it and that was just after the store had just gotten it back from the bezel being replaced and getting it back from Tag. I sold the watch not long after that. So in my experience, don't buy a watch with painted on numbers on the bezel.

    A gshock especially the 5600 series and a dressy/casual watch are enough.. once you have these basic 2, you won't need any other watches.

    I'm curious about your opinion on the case against La Californienne, a company that was buying old Rolexes and blinging them out. The case was won on the basis of Trademark protection. But the designs were unique, interesting and sold well. If I buy something, surely it is my right to do whatever I wish with it? I'd like to see an episode with your thoughts. Thanks

    My AD told me if I buy 2 datejusts I get to buy the elusive GMT Batman :-/ Is there anyway to come out on top in terms of value, if I agree to buy all 3 watches, sell the datejusts, and keep the GMT? I'm assuming I'd face a rather steep loss if I instantly try to sell the Datejusts. If I kept them for 5 to 10 years, would I recoup the difference then..? Just starting out here.

    3. Taking my TAG to LVMH for servicing (total rip off and they damaged my crown guard)
    4. Peeling the protective plastic off my Rolex GMT Master II 116710LN.
    5. Not buying the Sea Dweller 126600 instead of the GMT
    6. Wish I had more money to buy the Sea Dweller as well, the day I bought the GMT... Dang!!

    Insurance on a Speedmaster? I am not sure. I would have already spent thousands on insurance by now over the last 20 years for watches in that price category. If something happens it happens and I just take the loss. That seems preferable to me than committing to 500-1000 euro's per year (depending on the size of the collection) for the rest of my life. Judging by how few unfortunate accidents I have had with watches in the past two decades (one single time have I needed repairs due to my own negligence) it seems to me that insurance would amount to a hefty sum for which I would expect to get little in return.

    Like anything in life, it takes experience and sometimes taking an L. You learn from it. You can read and research tons of info about a particular thing and still find your self doing mistakes. You can apply that to anything in life. My first house flip I watched tons of videos and read books on it and spoke with people with experience. I learned some hard lessons down the road, but now I’m better than when I started . So yeah I bought the fashion watches first then the g shocks and seikos and citizen. Now I just want one to rule them all and a beater watch. That’s all

    Biggest mistake for me was that i bought a expensive watch without micro adjustment option on the bracelet. You can never get it right unless you are just lucky..... also i try not to use the cloth all the time to clean my watch....that ocd cleaning style leaves a washed out look on the polished surfaces after few months.

    Hi. I am new to the watch hobby.
    What do you think of buying the skx013 and sarb035? Are they still worth the money?

    • @othus123
      @othus123 4 роки тому

      I own a sarb033, if you can get the 035 under 300-350, it's a great watch. I am also looking for a skx013, but it is way overprized now.

    • @jaysterling26
      @jaysterling26 4 роки тому +1

      I've got both in my collection. The sarb035 is underated: everytime I wear it I'm captivated by the dial (I know..). As aforementioned, it's probably overpriced, but if you like it enough & don't have your sights on a higher value ( grail) watch it might be worth it.
      I wouldn't personally buy the skx013 unless you particularly want the original look. Long Island Watch now has an improved self brand version ( Islander Watches) that's so much better value. You can see their range on UA-cam . No, I'm not getting any commission if you buy one.Cheers.

    number 1 mistake is owning an automatic or manual watch, they cost a fortune and don't keep anywhere near as good a time as a 450 quartz.

  • @j.burgess4459

    My advice would be: always put quality over quantity. Of course it also depends on individual tastes, interests and lifestyle. But in general I think it's usually better to own fewer relatively expensive watches (maybe even just two or three of them) rather than to own a heap of not-so-expensive watches. Depending on a person's exact finances, it might even be better to own just _one_ real knockout-punch watch? Let's say someone is into F.P.Journe; given the price of buying and servicing them, it'd probably make excellent sense for a lot of guys to own just the one. Given a choice between: (a.) one _Chronomètre à Résonance_ and (b.) a Rolex, two Tudors, two Breitlings, and an Omega...well...I would certainly be for the former option every day of the week!

    Buying a watch in poor condition. I bought a seiko in poor condition for cheap, thinking it was a steal, had to service the movement, change the strap, and now i gotta change the cristal, by the time i'm done with all changes i'm over the price of the watch brand new. Always Buy in excellent condition/new.
