Why Animal Crossing New Horizons' Shop Closing Theme Sounds Like A Pixar Lullaby
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2020
- The Animal Crossing New Horizons has been taking over the internet for the past few months, and as much as I like the whole soundtrack I couldn't resist focusing in on my favourite tune in the game: The Nook's Cranny "shop closing theme" that plays for the last 10 minutes that the store is open each day. It's a pretty short and relatively simple piece of music, but its construction is just perfect!
Shoutout to my wife for letting me use her island to record footage

Never realized what you said about the normal melody echoing the way Timmy and Tommy speaks after one another - so cool.

I love this theme- that falling root cliché hits me right in the nostalgia every time!
Overall, I'd give this video an A. No wait- it's at least an A+!
You could say it was sharp!
Line clichés get an A... no wait an A+... no wait an A6
The video was thiiiiiis big!

Why does this song make me so emotional?! I literally cried when I first encountered it in the game and I cry every time I hear it.

SAME
ME TOO
Bro what? 💀💀💀
All of you do this? 💀💀💀
Something that I really like about this song is just that it exists. It's a callback to a japanese shop tradition of announcing closing time by playing a version of Auld Lang Syne, and it makes me nostalgic for the time I've spent in japan every time I hear it.
Was looking for this comment, I’m surprised no one else mentioned it
My friend and I discussed about this when we first found this theme, he’s a big Pixar fan so he could tell!
To me it sounds like a cross between Toy Story's music and the different hub music in Super Mario Galaxy. Mostly because of the line cliches that he mentioned and the 3/4 time.
Zach Attack That explains so much!!
@@ZachAttack6089 to me its like the movie up and toy story mix
“the two main kinds of line cliches that you’ll see in the wild” made me giggle
A wild line cliche appeared.
@@Stephen-Fox You used a iv-I resolution. It's super effective!
Like others, I wanted to mention the "Auld Lang Syne" as closing music in stores in Japan thing as the inspiration for having closing music for the Nook shops in Animal Crossing at all. And also I wanted to say, 9:33 I NEED those bread and donut shelf patterns. XD
8:25 I suddenly got a strong memory of the end of Monsters Inc when the door is fixed and we see Mike's hands covered in bandaids.
And Toy Story 4 when Andy plays with Woody and the gang one last time.
The main theme from "Up" does this too, I think? That's the first one that came to mind.
It’s called Randy Newman
It was actually in Toy Story 3 when he played with them for the last time.
Just a quick tip: it's a soprano sax and not an oboe doing the melody after the first string section. :)
I knew it wasn’t an Oboe! Haha. My guess was English horn or oboe d’amore
Was going to mention this too!
the smiley face of passive aggressiveness
Wow, I never realized how beautiful soprano sax is, that's awesome!
It's a clarinet.
Me, a band kid for 8 years:
Also me: *I don't understand*
I like to pretend I understand
I don't even know the first thing about sheet music. Only thing I understood in this is that the string "doesn't do a lot".
This is mostly music theory so if you didn’t take any music theory classes you’re really not going to get any of this.
meanwhile i played piano for 2 years and i’m like “ah.. it all makes sense.”
@@replayarena8429 Yeah, I had a tendency to think band kids knew their theory, but when your job is to play one of the notes of a harmony. You don't really need to understand the inner workings of theory. Although you can really benefit from knowing it.
The fact that I understand what you're talking about makes me glad that my mom made me do seven years of music theory
I’ve been watching his videos while trying to learn myself, he often helps me understand how things are used.
I understand it a little bit but sometimes I get confused LMAO
Japanese store closing themes IME are often either soothing waltzes like this or smooth muzak Jazz. A lot of places in Japan I noticed services have musical stings I.e each train station has its own jingle to tell you where you are on the line (much like town tunes in AC) traffic lights, some vending machines and ATMs all play a little tune to say they’re done.
3:10 that extra note on the echo is Tommy saying the last word a second time.
or maybe it's like when he quitely says things like "so designy" or "oh do"
Man, I’ll never know why line cliches sound so nostalgic to me. It’s not like I watched a lot of Pixar or anything.
He mentioned it used in a lot of older pop songs, and I know older country songs used that a lot so I feel nostalgic since it’s the kinda thing I can picture in the music my grandpa would listen to.
@@bucks6360 I think it inherently has a nostalgic feel to it, though, same with Ghibli music
I know "line cliché" you speak of as the "Kiss Me" - Sixpence None the Richer figure. It's a fantastic musical technique to create some cool color and intrigue while not much else is moving around it.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I really appreciate the tiny, multitudinous, and likely tedious edits all throughout this video.
For example the marker-on-paper visuals are really helpful to follow along with, but you went above and beyond to use masks and wipes to make it seem like they're being written (rather than abruptly appearing or fading in). And then the accompanying and varied sound effects for it... *chef's kiss* such ear candy!
Great video as always, but I think you're missing an extremely important point: this track's arrangement is inspired by "Hotaru no Hikari", the music that plays in stores in Japan when they're about to close.
When i heard this song for the first time i almost cried 🥺🥺
This unintentionally explained to me why I like the 8 ball song from Octo Expansion so much.
They did that in every Animal Crossing game. I was surprised when I heard this first time in Wild World.
I think nowadays we’d call this the Pixar sound. A beautiful song filled with cliche’s at the end of a long journey is just so good.
I remember the song made me cry like a little waa waa baby when I first heard it.
I'd been playing the game since its release and had never heard it; coming back from a long down in the dumps kinda day and hearing that, I guess it sounded like home. But also an "I'll see you tomorrow"
Had me sobbing af
One alternative name I've heard for line cliches is CESH, Chromatically Embellished Static Harmony
Loool I really like that 😂
This part always reminded me of some songs from the professor layton games
wow i’d love a video on professor layton music, those games are full of good tracks
cassie li me too!!!! professor layton soundtracks are god tier 😭
When you pointed out that this is actually a reworking of the original Nook’s Cranny theme earlier in the game, I started feeling tears building up. I’m probably overanalyzing this, but I think it’s symbolic in a way. When they start the shop in their little shack, they don’t have much, but Timmy and Tommy don’t really care because they have each other, repeating one after the other all day long without a care. When they upgrade to the new shop, things are a lot more complicated and busy, but they enjoy it because they love what they do and they love doing it together. Still, they feel like things just aren’t the same sometimes. But when the store is closing and things begin to quiet down, it reminds them of their humble beginnings when life was a little rougher, but much simpler. They’re glad everything is going well with the shop, but they’re even more grateful that they had each other in the first. FUCKK IM GONNA FUCKING VOMIT ITS SO CUTE AND SAD AND HAPPY AND AWWWWUGHGHG
That’s not an oboe. I can’t put my finger on it, but I think it’s a soprano sax.
I play soprano saxophone. It definitely is one. No oboe has that kind of smooth sound in the lower range.
Yes omg that’s what I thought too! I play an alto sax but I immediately thought that it was a saxophone!
@@jxjee Alto gang!
It's a clarinet.
Loseirdo I’m not sure if this is making fun of our over-analysis of something that doesn’t matter, but if you are serious, then it most certainly is not a clarinet.
I love that I understand 0 of all the music theory but find all your videos entertaining still
You are rapidly becoming my favorite channel on UA-cam. You've been absolutely killing it lately and I have loved every video. Keep it up!
I always thought that oboe part was a soprano sax. Huh.
It definitely is.
Pretty sure it is, yeah. It doesn't quite have the timbre of an oboe.
Tonal colour definitely screams soprano sax on a jazz mouthpiece. Oboe is brighter in that range
Oboist here - you're right, it is sop sax!
Im sure its a soprano sax
I appreciated the "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the scorpions bite" even though I'm watching this at 8 am
i clicked on this without reading the title of the video and i was about to comment that this is suuuuuuch a classic randy newman move, then i took a second to glance at the title and realized i have never had a single original thought in my life
This piece sounds a lot like felliniesque, a drum corps show from 2014.
La Strada uses a lot of line clichés
I marched that show! My rookie year at devs 😁
@@ARZiehm Never thought I would see Andrew Ziehm on an 8 bit music theory video lol
Austin Accomando Yeah dude! Two of my favorite things in one haha. Pulse gang represent 🙌🏼
I was totally getting a Toy Story vibe when I was arranging it for piano. Your videos are always so informative.
I can see why it reminds people of Pixar, but it actually reminded me first if a song from another Nintendo game, Fire Emblem Awakeningm one of the romance songs. "Ha ha! Yes, it will take some getting used to!" Ame if the song lol
Yesssssssss!
This melody is pure therapy, when I hear it my pulse slows, and any anxiety just disappears. 😊
OMG. I've only heard this music once, and it was when they were selling a harp. I thought it only played when they sold harps!
Its so dramatic, it feels like Timmy and Tommy are closing up shop forever, not just for the night (':
OH SHIT SO THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR FOR 3 YEARS. For real when you mentioned the "line cliché" a lightbulb lit up in my head, I've been trying to find out what I liked about that sound. I first fell in love with it in the Vulfpeck song "Wait for the moment".
When we studied the ‘line cliche’ in my uni theory classes, my lecturer dubbed it ‘Chromatic Embellishment of Static Harmony’ or CESH. Not sure that’s really a better name but it is a little more descriptive at least. Great vid as always!
This guy's channel is super underrated. Such great stuff here
This closing theme was also in New Leaf
Your villager is almost identical to mine, freaked me out for a second there
WOW your island is so amazing! Definitely stealing some inspiration... ;)
Me, smiling, nodding, having a good time: I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
This has turned into my favorite youtube channel about music! most others tend to focus on very flashy stuff that looks great as a video title, but not so much as actually helpful content. Here on the other hand, every video is straight up musical analysis showcasing what makes these pieces great, and giving you interesting ideas that you can apply to your musical writing in the most visual and easy to understand way possible. As much as I love Adam Neely, I find stuff like this way more useful than yet another video on making microtonal quintupletted polytonal lo-fi hip hop hahaha
Wow i loved the editing in this video and showing the notes on the music sheet and you playing the notes to further demonstrate the point your making turns this from a technical break down that goes over peoples heads into a good way to learn and be understandable for everyone! I really like the dedication that is put into something as simple as that and i appreciate it :)
And i never heard this closing theme before ether
Mrs. 8-Bit, your island is beautiful!
I always learn a lot watching your videos!
As someone who loves VGM and who has been slowly getting into music theory this year, your videos have been a huge help, so thank you for that!
We just found this UA-cam channel. Really neat!
When you aren't a music nerd but still watches random Animal Crossing related videos:
Me: Yep, love it
This reminds me a lot of the music you would hear from France and I adore it so, *so* much.
I recently watched Ratatouille and Monsters Inc. and I firmly believe your statement of this lullaby sounding like it's from Pixar is right on the target.
Lovely breakdown.
This first time I heard this my body went from “I gotta sell these fish fast!” to, “I think I’m going to calm down and think about things”
Man, I love your videos so much! I’m really into game music and music theory and I feel so lucky that your channel exists and that you put such dedication in every upload. Thank you very much, 8-Bit! I wish you all the best from Brazil.
The first time I heard the closing theme I had the original nook store so I sat on the little stool and was able to listen to it past 10 pm it was magical
I have never played an animal crossing game, but i still enjoyed this video, heck since i really started watching your new uploads I've barely even played any games you've covered, but i don't care. I absolutely love your videos for how they got me really into music theory way back in winter 2018. Thanks for making these videos 8bit, they are excellent.
Also i got a notebook and it's awesome!
I appreciate this channel so much.
Thanks for the awesome video as always!
I had a similar experience with Dearly Beloved from Kingdom Hearts when I was a kid. Everytime I booted up the game I was just not able to start playing if I hadn't taken at least a minute to sit in the menu screen just listening for a while...
i think what makes it nostalgic and emotional is because its so close to the nook shop in animal crossing new leaf on the 3ds, at least to me.
The song for bridge/incline ceremonies is the one that gets me. Also, I noticed the “doorbell” chimes are made from the notes in your town tune (not that anyone cares).
Thanks for the reminder on the notebook. It's the perfect gift for someone and a great way to support the channel
i've heard the line chiché being referred to as "cesh"
"chromatically embellished static harmony"
7:21 You can't hide your D-flat from me, Mr. 8-bit Music!
Beautiful analysis as always
Love your videos 8-bit Music Theory
I think it's super cool that they were able to capture the characteristics of Timmy and Tommy within their shop's melody. The way each section echo's and copies each other really good way of telling the player what these two characters are like.
I think one of the best hourly themes though is the 6pm song. I don't know about everyone else but does it sound like Wild World? It uses the same instruments that a lot of songs in Wild World do. Another favorite of mine is the 5am track.
I always forget how much I love your vids every time I watch them
Awesome! I didn't even know this song existed until now. I would love it if you could talk about the music in gen 4 of Pokémon, I always thought it stood out compared to the others. You're one of my favorite UA-camrs to watch during quarantine, I always feel like I'm learning something.
your wifes island looks amazing holy-
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL I CAN'T. See, the issue with games being so beautiful and peaceful is that reality will never be that way. Everyone's talking about how it makes them feel relaxed, but it's heart-wrenching for me. It makes me sad, and worried. It doesn't push reality to the back of my mind, it brings it rushing to the surface. Too much of a good thing, maybe...
Actually this is just chronic anxiety talking, probably.
Lol
this is the most unexpected yet my favorite of your videos,,
Thanks, this was pretty well done.
I love your videos so much and you're a huge reason that I am doing what I'm doing today.
See you at VGM Con in Minneapolis this April! ;)
This music reminds me a lot of the "Goodnight Kiss" music that Disney uses to not-so-subtlely let guests know that it's time for them to GTFO at the end of the night. Same kind of sleepy, calm, warm and fuzzy vibe. Amazing video!
You're a genius mate 👍 love what you do, keep doing it.
Oh boy oh boy this is definitely now my most favouritest channel!! Thank you for sharing this amazing breakdown on one of the best musical creations in modern gaming times bahahahaha!!!!
I'm SO glad I found you! The second I heard this I was like omg...this is SO Monster's Inc....SO Toy Story...SO Up opening scene.... all rolled into one...and it made me cry, like most Pixar songs do! I wish you'd pulled up a Pixar score and showed us some comparisons there but I really enjoyed this video. I'm just starting to learn music theory so I could actually follow what you were saying... and the whole line cliché thing is something I didn't know existed, but I always heard it and always cried when I did... music moves me on ridiculous levels hahaha! Anyway, great video and I've subscribed, and will be watching more!!!
It reminds me a little bit of Up, but mostly Randy Newman's score for Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. I think that "line cliche" that you discussed is a big part of his music and why it sounds so sentimental.
The shop closing theme sounds vaguely similar to Going Home by Kenny G. It's a song that's illegally used in China as a store is about to close or a broadcast is ending. It's almost certainly the inspiration for having a store closing theme at all.
Apparently shop closing themes are just a common thing in Japan (based on other comments on this video)
How is playing a song illegal lol?
@@ghost-fs7th If you don't get permission, it's basically stealing. Even if they paid, without permission, it would be illegal.
I had been just going to sell my unwanted stuff to timmy and tommy before closing the game to go to bed anddd... I heard this soft smooth soothing melody, It totally caught me off guard (The music had been normal when I entered the building but changed as soon as it hit 9:50PM)
This is such a great episode!! I didn't even realize this was in the game.
i stopped and listened to it and cried!!! it was so beautiful 😭
analysis like this makes me enjoy the music more!
I’ve been waiting for you to look at the animal crossing music! I’ve been thinking of you since I first fell in love with the music, the first day I played.
Awesome video !
bruh I’ve never had this happen to me before and it’s just- beautiful
As a composer myself, I just had to buy the manuscript paper to show support for one of my favorite channels. I bought 2 of them in April and I have already filled one of the books out completely. It was definitely worth the price of admission
I already loved this song but breaking it down like this and isolating all the chords just devastated me in the best way
7:25 The Db in the strings change to a C#. Nice catch!
Awesome island by the way
Aaaaaaaaaah!!!!!! Thank you for making this!!!!!!! The first time I heard this song I was so shook, wanting to hear it forever!!!!!!!!! Love your analysis!!!!
Am I the only one that loves the Bunny Day theme? It's nostalgic in a way I can't explain.
Music theory is so fascinating. It’s like we have used math to figure out the best way to hit each other in the feels. I love it. Really wish I had followed my passion for it. I want to make people cry. Lol
It's so cool to watch videos like this now that I'm beginning to understand to core things about theory. Knowing what all this stuff means makes it just that much better!
Been playing NH since launch and just heard the closing theme today lol. I thought it was included in a recent update 💀
Here in Japan it's common practice for shops to plat Auld Lang Syne to tell shoppers they're closing! So mimicking reality there just had to be a closing song for Nook's Cranny as well
WAIT YOU GUYS. This song is a play on the tune that was used in Nook’s Cranny (T&T) in New Leaf. It took me a full day to realize this.
Does anybody else watch these before bed? these videos are so relaxing lol
this song really makes me think of some of the softer moments from James and the Giant Peach (1996). similar vibes
love this video sm!!!!!
Happy to see you're still on-point with your fashionable hat game.
