I recently bought a 1983 Compac 16 and am in the process of fixing it up. Not nearly the job you tackled. Before you took the topsides off, I thought you were going to give up. You did a stellar job! It looks beautiful!
This was a incredible super job I just buy one 1978 compact 16 and look I going too ending doing the same like you, before I gone put a reinforced between top of keel and bottom deck to testing how is the performance in water
Wow that was fun to watch !!!! I'm restoring a 79 Catalina 25 and it has been sooooo satisfying spending my time bringing her back to life ! Amazing job my friend ! One question, did you send any pictures back to the old owner ? I bet he or she would enjoy seeing the boat . All the best, Monte
I did. I'm not sure it was a good idea. He had planned to restore her for a decade...it's tough having someone else complete your goals...I feel him though. I've been on both sides of this coin.
@@kpetingkepting7855 That foil rudder, of all the goodness you shared (thanks!), seems to be stuck in my fascination. Did it make the boat faster? Easier to tack? More responsive? More balanced? Less weather helm?
How did you lift the deck off and get it on the ground after disjoining it? I just got a c16 I'm trying to restore myself and having a brutal time trying to figure this out. Nice work btw!
I stripped it first (removed excess weight) and then tied some lines to it and hoisted it out of the way and pulled the boat out from under it. I believe you can lift it with a couple of folks though if you want to simplify things. I know I could lift the bare hull and flip it with another person (before reballasting). Good luck! They’re fun boats!
This video gives inspiration and I start fixed my compac 16 1978 the different is I going to do without taking the top I post some video in UA-cam by name Julio and yoly if want to see thank you for you give the push
Great story, came across this as Im looking at buying a 1994 Com-Pac 16 Legacy, its a garage kept one, so its in great condition. We are in Florida. Congrats on the little one!
I used Gorilla grip bed liner on the deck Desert Sand color works great almost 10 years old now . My Com-Pac was in a cow pasture full of water and beer cans . But I did the same thing took it all apart and built a complete new inside . I painted the hull forest green and the deck is a light sand color . I used mahogany on the outside wood ( not the best choice 10 years later) but the teak was trash when I got it . I plan to go over it all again this summer and use Brazilian Teak this time . She is really pretty now but will even look better with the new wood . You did a beautiful job on yours she looks awesome . They are a blast to sail they don't point real tight but when you fall off just a bit they make up for it in speed I love mine . I have had many offers for her and even a few complements from power boaters . I think they are one of the prettiest boats on the water . Nice job enjoyed your video .
This was truly fantastic to watch! Great job!! (I just restored a Precision p-18 with far less work that you had to do, but equally satisfying!!) Cheers!
Super project! Congratulations on your effort and hard work which obviously worked out well. I am at the beginning of a similar purchase but with much less work to be done on my recently purchased ‘85 Mistral 16 foot closed cabin model.
Maybe not, but it's pretty inert unless vaporized. On my house rebuild from 1900, I never took off my respirator when heating and stripping the lead paint.
Amazing job, I am very impressed! Thank you for sharing the well put together video. Could I ask if you have a website, or blog of the project? I might be starting a similar project on a Compac 16, and your steps are really helpful to see. Thanks again!
Beautiful restoration! Why did you have to remove the cement from the keel? I would have thought that that would be fine to remain. I understand drilling wholes to drain the water but curious about the cement.
The cement was cracked from being wet and freezing. The boat is up in New England. I'm sure this wouldn't be the case with southern Compacs. I also wanted to add lead and lower the center of mass/ effort and reduce the amount of cement to free up some bilge space.
Awesome video. I just bought my 16 and am starting to clean her up. Your video both scares me and encourages me at the same time!!! Thanks for putting it together.
Congratulations a great job restoring! I have the same boat and trying to do same. I am inspired by your work and looking forward sailing in Miami in the summer.
Very enjoyable, and informative, too! You've made her better than new, and that's quite an achievement. Believe every time someone brings a worthy old boat back to life an angel gets his wings!
Outstanding!! Fine work, something to be proud of for sure. Enjoy your baby, they grow up might fast.
Well done!
All around.
Now THAT'S a restoration! Well done! Well done, indeed!

Great idea! They need all the reinforcement they can get.
Cool project, and a great result!
small boats are fun and uniexpence I have a Venture 21 for 16 years. That is all I would afort back them,
The boat you have is always the perfect boat, right?!

Where did you get guidance for the lead encapsulated keel? That looks amazing.
inspiring. sold my power-cruiser going back to sail.
Rad!
Nicely done! Curious why you modified the rudder? What exactly did it do to improve performance?
Hey Eric, yes, the foiled rudder was far superior to the flat metal blade style rudder that she came with as a standard.

You did such a great job with her! Would love to do a similar full restoration of my Com-Pac 16 someday. Congrats on the baby!

Thanks for the tip!
I'd love to see a photo of that desert sand Gorilla Grip
here is a video of my Com-Pac ua-cam.com/video/WHW__MLTVQQ/v-deo.html@@trailzable
Both the project and the video are very satisfying to watch

Great job! Looks like all that work paid off for you. 👍👍👍

I have a 1980 compac 16. It needs a complete restoration similar to yours. How much would you charge?
HA! I need time more than money.
What brand and color is that Maroon paint? Also the quality?
Epipones one part paint.
Awesome job. Don't think I would have handled the keel lead without face protection, though.
Maybe not, but it's pretty inert unless vaporized. On my house rebuild from 1900, I never took off my respirator when heating and stripping the lead paint.
Great film of a great project. I restored my 81 but it was sound. I'm afraid I would have used a chain aw on your boat. Great job.

I did blog most of the work, just search “Kpeting blog” and I think you should find it. I went into the details a bit more.
I'm very impressed with you and your work on that boat. Really fantastic. You will be a great dad. Good luck.
I'm trying my best!
add a bow-spirirt
I did!
definitely a great update on the remodel= 10:)
how was the job of adding a bow spirit, seems straight forward, enough?
Very much so. The only trick was adding substantial enough backing plates in the narrow bow.
Damn GOOD JOB SIR! 😃👍
Keep that baby around boats and the water!
That's what memories are made of.
Maybe she'll take up the passion? 🙂👍
Thanks and I have been. There’re two kids now and they may report they have too many boats in their lives ;)
Saving my cash for something like this! Thanks for sharing!
Amazing job! Did you add foam back in?
I did not, but I added flotation bags.
Absolutely love this. I’m rebuilding one now.
Good luck!
Great video. One question. Did you replace the rubrail?
Hey Paul, I bought a new rub rail, but sold the boat with it not installed.

Yes!

I was scared the whole time ;)
I don't understand did you put in the lead or concrete ballast?
Allen Michaels looks like lead was placed in and then it was filled with concrete.
@@Aerial812 YES!!

They are fun boats for sure! And totally manageable sized projects!

FOR SURE!!
