The battle goes on for a long time, but in the end, Reimu wins. Gensokyo may need to be repaired, but on top of a ruined house, Reimu stands and says, "I guess its over..."
we dont know that, we know that by the time EoSD the spellcard rule is used in all gensokyo. We also know that in mystic square it wasnt, so we can guess that the fights there were "real" (and thus explaining why so few characters remained from the pc98 era). IMO there must have been some sort of starting point fot the spellcard rule, maybe some important youkai/human being killed or something like that. And that point would be the conection

That's true, although the canon touhou STORY, starts at EoSD.
Actually, looking back, the first five games are starting to seem like a forgotten past that is regretted to talk about.
