A Gaia retrospective would be extra appreciated right now since we didn't get a New Generation Gaia (although maybe not having a NewGen Gaia was very worth it considering how incredible Blazar is)
TDG didn't actually lose as much money as it's commonly believed in the english speaking community. The network, TBS paid for by far a majority of the production cost and Tsupro almost always made back what they themselves did spend. A lot of the 'overbudget' complaints come from Hideki Tsuburaya, basically guy who was constantly pissed off at everyone, thought any ultraman after RoU was garbage, and took any chance he got to cut costs. If your taking a look at the production blog it might be best to look at it's sources, it will occasionally cite heavily from the book 'Ultraman is Crying' which was by Hideki Tsuburaya and is where nearly all of the common ideas of early heisei spending too much come from, prior to that barely anybody made claims about that. The production blog is good but it makes mistakes and you'll find better information by looking into more intimate sources, also just don't trust Hideki Tsuburaya on anything, tried to end the family and company public image and was insanely jealous of Kazuo for getting to be CEO before him.
Thanks for giving more insight on this information. Hideki sound like a very... Interesting man... So since TDG doesn't always go overbudget , is there any other reason why Tsupro suffer financial problem? Is it just bad management and problem related to Chaiyo?
@@Villagerwarrior Yes, yes, and even more. One of the biggest problems might've been how there was no big new show for 1999-2000 or 2000-2001, I mean there was Neos but no big show with a large marketing push that would last long to give a cultural impact. That wasn't because they just needed a break or more time as some say, it was because another company kept begging TBS for a time slot for a show about their toyline, Zoids, eventually after years of this TBS just gave in and gave Ultraman's timeslot to Zoids for two years, and Tsupro didn't want to damage their relationship with TBS so they just stayed content with movies and direct to dvd gaidens and shows until they got their timeslot back for Cosmos. Then there was the issue of Cosmos' reception, Cosmos is a great show but it was not received well at the time and made a ton of kids fall out of Ultraman, the TDG crowd of kids who already felt like they might be getting too old for Ultraman and didn't feel the momentum of a 1999/2000 show saw Cosmos and it solidified the idea in their heads that they were too old for Ultraman instead of disproving or pushing that thought away. Also the older hardcore toku community was put off by Cosmos, and with Kamen Rider Agito airing the same year and having a lot that would draw the attention of older audiences as well as being a great show, Cosmos didn't get a ton of support from them either. Cosmos was Ultraman's brand for THREE YEARS at that with no 2003 show, so that also hurt Tsupro, the scandal about Musashi's actor really didn't help things. Then after that was the management issues with Hideki on board just being an asshole, the creative staff hated him, especially after Kazuo who for the most part just left them to their own devices and trusted them to make a good show people would want to see, Hideki would complain about everything and kept pushing cost cuts, which made sure general audiences didn't care as much about Nexus cause they thought it looked cheap, especially with not nearly as much extensive miniatures as most Ultra shows. Nexus' marketing didn't help it's reputation, we now know it as a classic that never was given it's real chance to shine its brightest, but at the time with the very poorly done marketing, pushing the "adult" aspect in the most irritating way possible, general audiences saw it as just trying too hard to be adult and edgy and were cool now we swear. Tsupro really could've benefitted from something going on Nexus' year, NHK (the biggest television network in japan) actually went to Tsupro and asked them to make an Ultraman show just for them, which with the far bigger budget than a TBS show, and potential for them to make a show with more market reach to cover for Nexus' experimentation, but Tsupro declined the offer, saying they felt they were already producing Nexus and just didn't want to give Ultra to NHK, probably didn't want to damage their already declining relationship with TBS. What they gave NHK instead was Bioplanet WoO, which bless that show's masterpiece heart, but it did not help Tsupro at all like an Ultraman show for NHK could've. Really the thing keeping Tsupro afloat during Nexus times was bringing TDG to China and the continuous sales from that, but even that wasn't enough to keep them going for too long. Around this time as well Hideki got really pissy and decided to leak ALL of the family drama to the media, and this was already after Masahiro Tsuburaya having a case against him for sexual harassment, which all made investors who were already unsure scared shitless and nobody wanted to touch anything Tsuburaya. Hideki might have not been CEO anymore but he still got one last shot fucking everyone over. Max, while a step up from Nexus in viewership and sales, was not received too terribly well either. Was just seen as generic, out of touch, and lame as shit, even with a fairly decent amount of eyes on it. And of course after that Tsupro was just like fuck it, it's too late anyways, and produced Mebius at a loss, sinking their ship faster to go down with pride rather than sorrow. Tsupro had so many chances to do something and save themselves but they just never took them, and by the time they realized how dire things were it was far too late. Chaiyo didn't help but that was just the surface of all of the problems and reasons for continuous loss in the 2000s. Sorry this comment was so long but there is just so much shit that Tsuburaya fell into and didn't get out of, whether by refusal on their part or just not being able to.
But in a toy selling standpoint, the concept of Sparkdoll is kinda smart. This is because you have the chance to sell sofubi that can also work as part of henshin gimmick (using Ginga/Dark Spark) which can increase it's charm. So it definitely can attract a lot of kids and toy collector. But you right, it definitely felt clunky and big especially when you watch character using it.
There's definitely potential with a more rural, empty setting to have really strong characters. SSSS Dynazenon tackles something similar, while not as isolated, the effects of the plot never really leave the scope of the main characters and the villains, they all treat monster attacks just as mundanely like its just a part of the gig, so it fills the room left behind with a full focus on all its main heroes. Its not exactly whay Ginga could've been but its the closest we've gotten
Ginga is far from perfect but I still like the concept of a smaller scaled Ultraman show that doesn’t use the attack team format. Part of me wishes that they would go back to that idea but with a budget that is higher than a paper clip and a piece of string.
Tbh, I love the Idea of having no attack team. I mean yes it good. But maybe aesthetic wont hurt sometime. I mean imagine a story where ultraman host is a young man who try to get back on his feet after terrible stuf happening to him. Something like Nexus except he have more positive look on things.
I feel the same for Ginga and especially Ginga S. I haven't even finished Ginga S it honestly DID feel like a chore, and like most chores I just swept it under the rug and called it a day.

I grew up with the first Ultraman series in the late '60's and just recently looked back into it. I had kids who grew up with Pokemon and Digimon, so I guess that I shouldn't have been surprised that marketing Ultraman toys would become a big thing. What I did not expect, however, was that the heroes would actually wear the toys and use them to convert to the Ultra-character. "I will raise my gaudy plastic bracelet, insert a playing card and add in some other capsule, token, card, etc... to become Ultra-profitable!"
I just relieved that I really had a hard time remembering names, so everything just feels fresh whenever I started a new series of Ultraman. I never intended to marathon the whole series and never had any plan to do any analysis or essay video from it, so my viewing experience is pure entertainment.

I saw ginga when getting into ultraman back in 2013, I rewatched ginga and its still as good as I remembered and I had fun watching it. Also not all spark dolls are "affordable" Nexus, Astra, King, Dorako are imposible to get especially ones that still have the tag
Villain decays is strong in this series. Poor Imperiser, went form an unstoppable juggernaut to just a mook. It's one of the worst cases of villain decay in the series. Yapool also starts his journey to becoming a loser.
Then we have something like Ginga S Muruchi who give Ginga, Victory and Alien Metron a hard time. It's also weird seeing Ginga struggling against Fire Golza despite already defeating Ex Red King. The series has the weirdest power scaling of all.

I remember being excited to get to Ginga while going through some of the earlier shows. For some reason, I assumed the school setting meant it would be about a bunch of kids who each get a spark doll, and thus a kaiju, alien, or ultra companion. Boy was I off the mark...
Not gonna lie the GInga S is best for its fast paced fights scenes, lots and lots of fight scenes. The main characters are kind of card board personality wise of the type of protagonist they represent and the rest feels weak character wise but its fine cause I normally go back to the fight scenes for this season of Ultraman Ginga S. Also damn the opening song is hype AF
very mild Ultraman Fan but seeing what the series used to be and then seeing Ginga was like getting flashbanged, and then getting flashbanged again right when the first wore off and your hearing came back.
Something I always thought was weird is in Ginga Taro says there's no Kaiju or Aliens/ultras in this universe but then in Ginga S we have a Kaiju (Shepardon) and an Ultraman (Victory) so I'm guessing the writers just forget about that
It's been a long time since I've seen either show, since I haven't exactly ever felt the need to rewatch them, but I remember Ginga having something of a quirky charm that Ginga S didn't have as much. I recall specifically that there was a joke with a couple of the characters licking ice cream I found humorous and I think outside of the excessively childish jokes the humor sort of worked for me. I'm fine with both shows but I'm running off of an opinion from seven years ago so I might be similarly harsh on a rewatch lol. I dislike when an Ultra show feels like it doesn't have stakes and Ginga is a glaring example of that, as you touch on.

Great review and don't worry about being "negative" about a series. Haven't seen these but I can definitely see where you're coming from since it kinda reminds me of Godzilla Final Wars with it's non stop action. That would definitely be exhausting in a series. The concepts look great, shame it couldn't have been executed better. I do own and enjoyed the x and orb films but definitely like the more simplistic approach in the showa era. Looking forward to the next one!
I think the monsters start out as easy defeats to the point that the timer doesn't flash red. Make him believe that being Ultraman is easy to the point that be thinks he can take on anyone...until that ONE Monster or Alien giving him problems to the point that it almost kill his friends showing that even when you think it's easy you'll need to be ready for hardship or something.
The only positive I can see, for all the "toyetic" transformation scenes in any Ultraman show, is that it saves them just enough in money and time that they can put a little extra effort into the FX and battles. Give them a little extra "oomph", I think anyway. But yeah, "Ultraman's transforming! I'ma make a sandwich, be back just in time!"

Every time you pull a clip of those toys moving around and interacting with each other I can not think watch them without thinking about monster island buddies lol
Ginga was the first Ultraman show I watched, I had only seen the Ultraman Zero: Revenge of Belial movie before it. It wasn't until is saw GingaS on youtube a year ago that i got back into Ultraman. Far from perfect but I appreciate it.
13:00 Buddy, Japan has a tourist attraction built around a real-life incident where a bear slaughtered and ate 10 people. I don't think this is as severe as you think it is.

I think my theory that why they reused same kaiju is because that they are similar to pokemon where they are many kaiju and pokemon that looks the same but in a different personality
I'll be 100% honest. After Ultra Galaxy movie, I grew out of Ultraman for a while (call it the too good for Kaiju, edgy teenage years). Everything up to Mebius was the bomb, but the Ultra Galaxy already started to feel off. Despite returning to my Kaiju phase as an adult, I still can't bring myself to watch the new Ultra shows. I understand 100% that they burned all their money on shows from Tiga-Mebius, and so new ultra series are made on a budget. But still, they are so filled with toys, they look cheap, and they lack that same style and energy that heisei era shows had (judging from clips and stuff I have seen). I really wouldn't mind giving one of the newer shows a try, but the sceptic in me is too strong.
If you want to watch a new gen ultra series, just dont watch Ginga, Ginga S, R/B and Trigger, the other new gen series rank from decent to really good in my opinion.

I always said Ginga's first half is, "we got Kamen Rider Fourze at home." with a 3 dollar budget, and the Ginga S half okay now we are actually an Ultraman show with a slightly better budget.
Your videos are awesome man, Ultraman was my childhood and you're doing the community a great service by well, subjecting yourself to watching mediocre quality tokusatsus in 2023, keep it up we love these :)
Good video, interesting to hear your thoughts once again. I can only imagine that my comparative disinterest in this comment compared to my other ons on these Ultra Retrospectives is pretty apparent, but I think it's not very difficult to understand why that might be the case. Now, I would say I preferred Ginga S, but I definitely can agree that it's probably a worse show. I just *really* hated the lack of stakes that Ginga had. The monsters just felt so... unimportant. You're telling me all these monsters appear nearby an occupied school, and NOBODY is investigating this, or contacting the police, or the military, or anything at all? When I made my way through the Ultraman franchise, I always did my best to actually *watch* these shows and appreciate them, but with Ginga I was just so bored I felt compelled to just check my phone on multiple occasions, and I hadn't felt that way since Cosmos. Ginga S just had so much going on by comparison that it was hard to look away. I do think it really says a lot though that I remember Ginga more for the elements of it that just bothered me. I really didn't like what they did with the Kemur Man in episode 2. I can't deny that his first appearance in Ultra Q was a tad bit goofy thanks to his iconic run, but seeing him be lowered to a borderline joke just didn't sit right with me. My passive disinterest with the melodrama reached its fever pitch during the Grand King episode, it felt like Hikaru was just goofing off with the girl (already forgot her name lol) during a fight, and it totally destroyed any tension for me. When I first started watching this franchise, I was pretty excited to see what it would deliver with the modern shows. My mind went wild wondering how they would use our modern technology to tell new and innovative stories, and I do think that wonder was met with time... But I can't deny that Ginga and Ginga S got off on the wrong foot and only helped to make me question my wonder in the first place. In any event, I look forward to your next retrospective, and I can't wait for you to cover some of the other New Gen shows, things that most often have a little bit more nuance to them.

to me, the Ginga series was really just a vehicle to shrink the standard 6 inch Bandai figures down to 5 inches.....much lower quality toys.....the 'Spark Doll' format kept going after that. As a lifelong collector of the 6" kaiju series, it was dark day for me

I think the toyetic parts aren't the problem with ginga S, cause you can ignore it or just learn to not mind it, but the show's bad parts kinda make the toy ad parts more noticeable. Better shows have had worse ways of advertising is toys in my opinion.

2007-2013 was a hard time for me to be a fan of the Ultraman franchise. I was even turned off by the Zero films. I never knew how dire Tsuburaya’s financial situation at the time.
i honestly loved ultraman ginga and ginga S when i watched as a child. key thing being as a child. as i grew older and got into other ultra shows i realize as time went on how disappointing ginga and ginga S feel.
Ginga (the Ultraman) felt like a Gary Stu to me. He pretty much always had a power he could win with, and only lost because the script called for it. Hikaru was template shonen protagonist who they gave a name and look to, but didn't bother to with ANYTHING else. Positivity is his personality, and he never actually struggles with anything. As the video said, the cast was so weak and forgettable, the only episode I actually remember and enjoyed was the salary man being turned into Gan Q, which barely featured the ultras at all. It's unfortunate that Trigger felt like it borrowed a lot of the character and episode structure from Ginga S...
Hello, Navek15 here (it’s pronounced like ‘Nah’-‘Vek’). Would you believe Ginga S was the season that got me into Ultraman. Yes, it’s an incredibly flawed show, but it’ll always have a special place in my heart for introducing me to what has quickly become one of my favorite franchises. I’d also really love to see you thoughts on my favorite New Generation show, Ultraman X.

Its funny how Ginga has one of the most beautiful designs for an Ultraman, and Victory has a really beautiful body design but a dumb bucket head with a giant V, and both were stuck in bad shows.
Here’s something else that’s weird. So apparently the first season has a completely different opening than what’s on the blu ray. While the blu ray has Ginga no Uta, the version I’ve found with fansubs like Tv Nihon has a completely different song. Ginga no Uta was originally just an insert theme, much in the same vein as early to mid Heisei Kamen Rider. But then it got released on the blu ray by mill creak and now it’s the intro. Heck, the tyrant episode, the one where Hikaru turns into Ultraman Tiga was original just a special episode and now it’s on the blu ray as episode 7. Why is this? Is this another Ultraman Tiga situation where the rights to the song are butt fucked up the dick?

I really hate to leave a negative comment and Ive enjoyed all of the Ultra retrospectives you have come out with so far but this video just feels... mean spirited. Especially when compared to the other retrospectives. Dont get me wrong these two shows arent perfect which I acknowledge and Ill admit I have a bias as Ginga is one of if not my favourite Ultras, but the show had no budget, no creative freedom from bandai (something theyve only recently got back with Blazar) and reportedly almost zero production time, Ginga S suffered a lot of similar problems but with a slightly higher budget. If it wasnt for these two shows we wouldnt still HAVE Ultraman as an ongoing franchise and for that alone it deserves just a little respect at least regardless of personal opinion. Do you share the same distaste for the UGF series which shares similar techniques, budget and pacing? I hate having to be negative about this but watching this show and its sequel get the same level of hatred from across the internet constantly as Saber gets from Kamen Rider fans is genuinely heartbreaking when Ginga HAS merit and IS enjoyable to people despite its limitations. Maybe the show wasnt for you and thats absolutely fine but that doesnt mean other people felt the same and this video comes across so negative it only serves to put people who havent seen it off potentially trying it even if they might actually enjoy it. Im sorry for the rant but this show means a lot to me and was the reason Ultraman became a special interest to me, an autistic person, in the first place and its painful to see it presented in such an overwhelmingly negative light like this so I felt the need to voice that.
I take no pleasure in being negative about anything, it was actually very difficult to write and edit this video because I hate hearing myself talk like this, but if I'm doing a comprehensive viewing of the entire franchise then that inevitably means I'm going to run into shows I don't like and I'm not going to lie about my opinions regarding them. I tried to like Ginga and its sequel season on this rewatch, but regardless of the unfortunate real life circumstances surrounding their creation, which I do address to put these shows into context, they're just not fun to me. Personally. In this highly subjective review. One where I still point out things I find merit in (those two really solid Ginga S episodes, for example). I understand the frustration in seeing something you like being bashed repeatedly for years on end, this show has been out for over a decade now, but it's important to consider the show doesn't endear itself very well to some people. It's hard to not feel sorry for it, but it is still a product that was put out there to be judged.

At first, i don't really like Ginga and Ginga S, especially Ginga, because i feel the tone is too ”safe”, it doesn't have any attack team and it doesn't really have a high stake at the start. But now, i can appreciate it more, especially knowing that it's made with Tsuburaya limited budget at that time. I think Ginga and Ginga S is the start of a new tropes for today Ultra. First, the new Ultra design different from old Ultra, with Ginga still using the familiar red and silver color but with the addition of crystal on his body and Victory have a dominant black colour. Second, like it or not, the usage of collectible gimmick. Third, the creation of a new Ultra team, the New Generation Heroes. We already have the Ultra Brothers so why not making a new team for a new generation. I know that technically Zero is the one who start the new generation era and for now it last until Decker, we don't know about Blazar yet, but for team specific, i feel like it consist of Ginga, until Taiga, eventhough Taiga have his own team, the Tri Squad. Zero have his own team, the Ultimate Force Zero, but he can be considered as the New Gen mentor

I cant believe that Ginga is an introduction of Ultraman to me. When i was a kid, its actually really good but after i grew up and watched many Ultraman series, it does hold up a little bit on S1 but on S2 it is just forgettable like i literally forgot whos the final boss for Ginga S2 and an important character development with Victory. This series is solid in S1 but just ended up boring in S2 except for the Gan-Q episode which still remains as one of the best side character focused episodes in my opinion. In the end, its great when you're just a dumb child who loves explosions but it gets boring when you know the same lesson it is trying to tell, the lack of character development and literally some of the cast is just plain boring

I know that hideki was an incompetent ass (knowing his tenure with metal kaiser). But this was pretty surprising.
I think it does affect that only TGA lose money because of how expensive hiroshi nagano is including Gaia and Agul.
@@wander7324 I never thought Tomy and Zoids would wind up getting partially involved in this story.
Your "mean" is still a joy to listen to and it isn't an angry experience. Also, tired Victory and Ginga are such a great meme and character moment.
Sparkdolls are like the Ranger Keys from Gokaiger but bigger and clunky to handle.
I would love to see someone make use of Ginga's premise again because I think there is genuine potential built out of it's isolation
It'd be good for a mini series

I liked that new gen didn't have attack teams and honestly thought they were being different rather than budget issues.

I'm so happy that they went back to shorter transformation sequences with the latest entries.
I just relieved that I really had a hard time remembering names, so everything just feels fresh whenever I started a new series of Ultraman. I never intended to marathon the whole series and never had any plan to do any analysis or essay video from it, so my viewing experience is pure entertainment.

5:20 Absolutely fuking LOVE that Take Me Higher is used here to show Dark Tiga. Great editing ZaGorudan.

What happened to Ultraseven?

If you need any ideas for a new Ultra Gaiden (aside from Ambassador Magma or Redman), I suggest Kaiju Booska (Which aired alongside Ultraman '66 as a lighter children's sitcom. Banilla's suit was used for the main villain!).
This video is now a year old.
so lugiel was playing Skylanders with spark dolls
I actually really liked ginga I didn't like s too much but I'll have to rewatch see what if I still like it.
Oh so is Decker a hit or miss then or squarely in middle? Big improvement over Trigger so hit for me.
Haven't seen it yet. I hear it's alright.
@@ZaGorudan yeah, I can definitely say that Decker is a huge improvement over trigger and this is coming with someone who actually likes trigger.
@@ZaGorudan also, are you going to do a retrospective on hanuman and the seven ultraman as well as the original Gridman show and its anime’s?

I never did like how in Kamen Rider and Ultraman, the henshin devices looked way too toy-like

Why does the Ginga S attack team reminds me so much of Mebius'
Maybe its the jackets
Ginga is weird, but it did save the franchise.
Also think Ginga has the best suit

I'll guess i just watch Gan Q episode and Idol Metron Episode
Then drop the show entirely

But I loved Ultraman Taiga 😢
I haven’t watched ultraman actively like you and many others have but I definitely agree with you when it comes to the Heisei era and toys. I’ve been hating a lot of the heisei era stuff because of the gimmick and toys but I also understand why they do it but it still sucks

For real 25 episodes is the superior format unless the story is insanely large scale, 25 are enough to to everything

I don’t hate the new gen ultras but the idea of toys being a plot device it’s annoying sometimes. I kinda wish they would go back to the old ways
Hey Gorudan, did you watch Ultra Fight Victory? If you didn't, you don't need to force yourself to watch it just because I asked you if you did.
The most information that's gained from that is that Victory has a new form. I've got my own opinions on those Ultra Fight specials that I'll probably do a whole video on.
