Antique Teapot Restoration with AMAZING outcome
ua-cam.com/video/mcisdR6ZtZc/v-deo.html
Not a great restoration, the green patina looked better before and would not have compromised the copper. You could have soaked the the pot in water to clean the mud off and only shine the metal on the inside of the pot and lid. You could have done a lot better with the handle too. Solder is not a good substitute for metal. You should have cut some square copper stock and then solder the pieces on.
The Chinese words at the bottom indicate this teapot may be over 2-3 hundred years old, or even been used in the imperial palace during the Ching Dynasty. If it is not fake item, it may worth at least USD 2-30,000, and may be more if it was really used in the imperial palace. But after you sandblasted and polished it and have the handle broken, it may drop its value by an least 80%. No matter what, this teapot should have an age of over 100 years and is an valuable antique of good value and is better for keeping in museum. It is a pity that it has been polished in this way.
@@billchan2295 I totally agree. And the gold paint he added to replace the gold plating on the decorative parts was litterally adding insult to injury. It's one thing to sand blast a rusted old tool or a mid century brass lamp base, but this wasn't a restoration, it was a violation.
@@billchan2295 7 8i
looks better before you put dirt all over FAKE!
Sad thing is, to me it does look like a genuine antique and if so, he totally destroyed it. Not everything is ment to look all shiny and golden. Originally, due to the use of two different metals the pot was of a beautiful dark green adorned with gold coloured monks. This is no coincidence ofcourse so probably the pot was supposed to have that colour, and not all shiny and golden. Then he destroyed the eyes of the handle that were shaped as tiny hands, and shaved away some of the ridges of the handle. My stomach turned. This is in no way to be called a restoration, a restoration should always be conservative without damaging the object. In my opinion a beautiful ancient artifact was destroyed.
Je suis entièrement de votre avis.
He ruined the piece.
I agree. Only if the teapot was a junk teapot that was so mass produced that it would only good for scrap cast iron, could you justify destroying the patina of the piece.
@@scottloar oui metonia c'est un fait certains et c'est malheureusement irréversible quel gachis.
@@jeanmariedu5914 C'est une parodie de restauration.
Anyone else feel Baumgartner waking up in a cold sweat knowing someone out there somewhere is doing many many "unacceptable" things and calling it restoration?
I love Baumgartner, and yes, I thought this very same thing.
You mean like using a wire brush? Yikes. I cringed.
Yep, they actually ruined it. Should never of used the wire brush or sand blast. Don't know what they are doing
Bauwgartner rules! ❤
😄This is the 4th time I have been on an unrelated site and have had Baumgartner referenced in the comments for proper conservation . He has really taught us well! Thanks, Julian!
I never comment on anything but this is not a restoration. It is like most say destruction of a gorgeous original teapot. After the polish all details and patina are gone for ever. A restoration of an artefact often means cleaning the rough and leaving the patina and aging to it.
Any item that will be used with food cannot have a "patina", you could poison yourself. Silver and brass can be cleaned, a "patina" doesn't enhance their value. This has been beautifully returned to it's original function as a teapot.
Looks like all you did was put a novelty tea pot in mud and let it sit.
And I came here for this comment to see how many people noticed it lmfaoooooo 🤣😩
Got one similar from home goods
Agreed. Why go whole hog with the wire brush without first just running it under some hot water? Seems very very suspicious to me, nothing worse than someone trying to put things over on everyone else. Unlike that tea pot you might wanna come clean there brother. I mean not for nothing but it looks like a lot of the crap that you’re restoring has the same exact build up on it, are you sure you ain’t pulling it out of a hole you dug in your backyard?
THATS EXACTLY WHY I CAME TO THE COMMENT SECTION!!! I HAD TO KNOW...I KNEW I WASNT THE ONLY ONE THINKING THIS. im going back to hand tool rescue. Thats my dude man...hes AMAZING!
I also agree and then he destroyed it in the name of restoration. It was a beautiful piece of history. 😞
Kinda liked the black and gold look prior to the blasting
It's overly done'..
I prefer the antique look..
@@sarleyvergara1528 fair enough..
It kinda reminds of a child's dig your own fossil kit that you get at a toy store. The kind were the kid digs through a slab of clay to find plastic dinosaur bones. And the sandblasting was his version of the child painting the bones pink and adding glitter to "make them pretty ".
Me too , the black highlighted the figures
I agree
The patina on the original looked better.
Exactly. He ruined it...
I think someone has already noticed the symbols on the bottom of the teapot, which are written in an ancient Chinese script known as 'Seal Script'. These symbols represent four Chinese characters, '乾隆年製', meaning that they were made during the reign of the Qianlong emperor in the Qing dynasty (1735-1796). However, this is unfortunately a recent copy of an ancient Chinese teapot, which is of decorative value but not of much collector's value. The eight figures on the teapot are the eight immortals of traditional Chinese mythology, representing good fortune and happiness. The restorer has fun at the end of the video by putting the tea leaves directly into the teapot, but this is a funny demonstration, not to be followed, as the tea will not taste good.
Thanks for that information. He still ruined a pretty teapot.
I would actually say FORTUNATELY it's a copy of an ancient teapot because.... ☹️
Thank goodness it was genuine then. Hundreds of years of patina wiped out with a bit of sand.
I’m glad you told us this, I was very nearly heartbroken. 😥
Thank you for giving such detailed facts about the piece.
Would you drink tea out of a pot with that many chemical processes done to it?
Having restored some antiques my heart sank as I watched something so unique defiled.
I can’t believe you sandblasted that. It was gorgeous before, not just shiny.
Best thing about this video was the 12 bar blues at the end. An ironic choice of music genre!
I preferred the contrast between the dark green background and gold figures, pre sand blasting.
You need this mantra: Just because you can, does NOT mean that you should.
Why go whole hog with the wire brush without first just running it under some hot water and wiping it with a nice soft cloth or hell even a sponge? It seems very very suspicious to me, nothing worse than someone trying to put things over on everyone else. Unlike that tea pot you might wanna come clean there brother. I mean not for nothing but it looks like a lot of the crap that you’re restoring has the same exact build up on it, are you sure you ain’t pulling it out of a hole you dug in your backyard? Just Saying. If other commenters are skeptical as I am anyone else should be a tad suspicious.
It looks like someone smeared mud over it to try and make it look worse than it is.
wash mud off first!!!
Absolutely, looks like he plastered it with mud and left it to dry in the sun or oven. A gentle wash and scrub with a soft bristle brush would have been a better option, in my not so expert opinion.
THATS EXACTLY WHY I CAME TO THE COMMENT SECTION!!! I HAD TO KNOW...I KNEW I WASNT THE ONLY ONE THINKING THIS. im going back to hand tool rescue. Thats my dude man...hes AMAZING!
So unprofessional to restore antique .

Ok, I'm suspicious. Right from the start, a restorationist would not use a crappy wire brush to remove all that loose, dried mud. It would be immersed in water to saturate the dirt and let it fall off with little to no effort. The use of a wire brush was immediately extreme. The revealed green patina was an applied finish MEANT to be there! A restorationist would have known that, and no one, not a single restorationist I have ever known, uses a sand blaster on an "ancient" artifact; Tin toys perhaps if they are extremely rusty, but not certainly antique metal. Removing the original finish and making this piece look like a new piece it wasn't meant to look like just ruined any value on the market it would have had if it had just been washed free of the mud, and left at that. Sorry to be a purist, but that is the definition of "restoration" after all.
Thank you for comment. we will try in the next videos
Its killing me as a restorationist to see the wire brush used on this pot. I want to shout "STOP!"
Why didn't he just wash it off with water?! 😨
My thoughts exactly..let it sit in warm water n wash of residue with sponge, cheese cloth n soft brush for the tiny crevices.
Se lo permite porque no es original, sino sería un estrago.
If this is actually"ancient" you should be prosecuted for ruining such an artefact. I hope it's just "old" or made to look old.
But now it looks like unstable cheap.
Fake ancient item. In Asia there is an industry making fake ancient things. Unless you are an expert, you can be fooled. Some tourists buy them paying lots of money
Oh the antique patina was fabulous!
He wasted a lot of time with the wire brush and hand brushing. You could easily have sparked it in water and got the caked on mud off. I'll stick my neck out a bit. I suspect the mud was caked on in the first place. Otherwise a routine restoration
I came down here to say the same thing. Why would you use an aggressive metal brush on an antique? Godda love content creation
My guess is that the mud was added recently, to enhance viewer interest.
I have yet to see a good, honest restoration on any of these Chinese "restoration" channels.
@@justinbelshe You are Absolutely correct 👏
The wire brush was murder. It was unbearable . Why did the handle get the chop ? Having said that , I show myself to be a complete philistine when I say I really liked the beautiful patina ( grime of time ) free final result. Possibly ruined the poor vessel as an artifact , but I wouldn’t say no to it sitting around my house .
Такий гарний заварничок, такі милі горнятка, листя чаю придають додаткової атмосферності і тут ...електрочайник!
To peel a beautiful green patina from such a teapot is barbaric and even destroying the object. This will be said not only by every marshal, but also by every professional in the protection and conservation of monuments
Well, unless this "antique ancient teapot" is at most 20 years old.
It's probably just a vintage everyday item made on an assembly line judging by the casting marks. (I could be wrong of course.) He's obviously not going to whip a priceless antique into the sandblaster.
Most of the items here are "fake dirtied" like this teapot was as well, for extra effect, so I would reckon it's well known what this actually is.
@@comradewolf4901 I had exactly the same thought 👍
Да?.А тебя не смущает печать мастерской,которая существовала только до 1889 года?.А чайник вообще начала 19 века,судя по гравюрам.
Beautiful job restoring the teapot. It seems of all the dynasty of China empires was carved into that teapot. Beautiful. ❤❤❤❤❤ I'll give it a ten.

The deep green patina was actually perfect. Silver tea pots remind people more of English tea sets. And the details on the characters is gone with the paint over. This was a beautiful clean up job till the patina was taken off.
Items intended for food use should never have a "patina".
you have devastated a fine piece of ancient art!
Thank youuu
If it was really ancient, then you actually ruined it. Beautiful deep green patina was formed for centuries and you simply destroyed it with sandblasting. Take care in the future not to destroy museum pieces.
While I agree it should not have been sandblasted, I am not sure that is patina. I think it is a coating applied at manufacture. If it were patina the decorations should also show it.
I bet the teapot is actually worth $1.50 at a flea market.
@@rogerlaplante4124 exactly

@@rogerlaplante4124 the decorations didn't have the same patina because they were gold plated. Brass will get a patina with age but gold NEVER tarnishes.
This is a perfect dupe show, it was a fine antique art.
_Wow, such a nice little pot. Such a shame someone decided to coat it in mud and let it dry before this video_
😉
He did an excellent job 👏. He returned it to the original looks. That teapot is made of brass it will eventually tarnish to a darker green color.
Thank for cmt
Omg I so wish you would have just cleaned it and polished it and called it a day. It was beautiful the way it was after you cleaned it. I died a bit when I seen you sand blasted its beauty away. I stopped watching at that point.
Well, that's been destroyed good and proper!
Looks like it's new, you just put mud to make it looks like old and rusted
I feel the same way .. if it was truly an antique and had that kind of build up it wouldn’t just be dusty fine particles it would have pits from removing dirt. Which it could be a antique he covered in mud and ruined it either way
DESTROYED A BEAUTIFUL PIECE!
Su manera de "restaurar" piezas antiguas es destruyendolas..... he visto otra destrucción (perdón, "restauración") de un tea pot chino que quedó tan mal como éste.... Felicito a este destructor (perdón, "restaurador") por su "admirable" trabajo....

It's a nice copy of an original tea pot with the Eight Immortals. Though a copy, it had more character before it was made all shiny.
What a pretty teapot 🫖☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️🫖🫖🫖🫖🫖
All I wanted to do was scream at how callously and disrespectfully you handled this beautiful ancient piece. You scrubbed the dirty off with a wire brush instead distilled water and a soft nylon brush you were so bombastic with this artifact I cringed and couldn't stomach the rest.
Thankfully, it’s a reproduction and more of a novelty item. Sadly, it’s still ruined
OMG absolutely amazing absolutely stunning
Thank you !
This broke my heart. This is actually a rare metal ceremonial teapot from the Tang dynasty. The stamp on the bottom of it indicated that it was definitely Tang. He should have got this professionally cleaned and that's all. It was probably worth between $100k to $200k. Unfortunately he's just wiped at least half of its value out with what he just did to it.
Some guys here thunk it's just a decorative piece, beautiful yes but not an antique.
Most likely a reproduction. But even so, it should not have been destroyed this way.
No, it's a honoriam to the dynasty by a later teapot creator.
Karya Seni teko yg sangat rumit kini kini bisa di nikmati kembali
When he used this torch, he destroyed it. Cleaning it with the water made it look beautiful.
had yourself some fun. nice little item
Sorry, but here a genuine antique was totally ruined by removing the patina from the pot's outside. Removing only the calcification and grime from the inside would have been the right thing to do.
It's brass, the patina will return if you want patina. Polishing silver and brass doesn't alter it's value and does protect the metal.
Love the brilliant shine!
The worst "restoration" I have ever had the misfortune to witness.
Black and golden look .....❤️❤️❤️
It's a pity that such a beautiful antique has been destroyed
Why? It's been returned to it's original form, a teapot. There are things that shouldn't have "patina", such as paintings and anything that is designed for food use like a teapot.

That copper patina was probably hundreds of years old. That sandblasting hurt my soul.
Patina doesn't belong on metal teapots.

Why take the handle off?? This “restoration “ isn’t really a restoration; it’s destruction.
It's still a beautiful pot weather a recreation or an antique.
Is this an imitation or a real antique? If it is a real antique, and you refurbished it, do you know how much money you lost? If you don’t do any treatment, the real antique can sell for tens of thousands of US dollars at least; but after refurbishment, it may be worthless.

Beautiful good job😊
Well if that was a expensive antique it isn't anymore.
I absolutely love when you sand blast!!!!!!!
eesh. I don’t usually comment on videos, but this was hard to watch. This isn’t something you bought as a damaged antique, it’s clearly something you dipped in mud yourself to get a good show out of. Even if it had been an actual antique, the callous way you treated it is heartbreaking. This ISN’T restoration - it’s a cash grab.
Aboustly beautiful !!

Honestly why didn’t you just wash it to begin with? Because it’s not old and was thrown in the mud deliberately.👎👎👎🇦🇺

Очень жалко,вещь испорчена безвозвратно. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I just loved it, all of it.
Made of a good thing "Sweet snot"! the restoration ended after the patina was cleaned off, and banal repairs began. Restoration involves stopping the destruction and delicately preserving what remains of the traces of time. And so the kettle immediately lost in price by 80%
Patina has no place on silver or brass or anything used with food. I assure you polished silver is more valuable that black encrusted silver, same with brass. Patina on metal is like yellowing varnish on a painting. It has to go.

Buy a fine teapot in a thriftshop. It's an artificially weathered replica, but still fine. Then roll it in the mud, butcher it with every tool you have, and when you're done call it restoration. The botched brazing was so painful to look at

Hmm, and we are just supposed to believe you found that in the mud? Or did you pack it in mud for a few weeks or months, so it would corrode? I'd like to see where you find these things.
