I ran into Ryan in OC during covid. I walked up to him and he and his friends were so cool and genuine. He is a legend on and off a skateboard. Ryan, im almost 3 years sober now 🎉Thanks for the encouragement
Ocean city Maryland? Where do you train bjj? Interested because I just moved to the area
@@illtaketheusual2996probably orange county
Got a feeling he means orange county CA
Sorry, I was meaning orange county California. I trained at Victory in san diego but haven't trained since my car accident
Congrats on almost 3 mate. 🎉
Sheckler definitely deserves to go down as a legend. He’s done so much for the sport, and still absolutely rips to this day
I remember when kids were hating on Tony and then the same when Ryan got big. I never understood the thought process of those people.
Those initial kneejerk reactions to stuff like that is typically inspiration, or jealousy. I think it’s highly dependent on one’s personality
There was a big Us vs Them mentally back then. Skaters were always treated like Skum by the mainstream, so once people like Tony ot Ryan got big they went "corporate" and become one of "Them" and we're no longer one of "Us" in the minds of skaters. People couldnt celebrate their hard work and achievements back then, they just saw them as sellouts to corporate America. I'm glad most people have come around and realized how much Tony has done for skating.
@jarredlkling yea, the skaters and bmx guys I grew up with in the 80s & 90s didn't care about celebs personal business. The only thing we cared about is if you come to the local spots and actually skate or ride and don't cause drama, then we're cool. Everything else can be discussed with the girls at the girls' tables lol
@@TenchuTesshu the only "extreme" athlete that I don't remember being ostracized from the community after becoming a house hold name was Sean White. And that was because he won Gold medals for the country so even though he was on CNN he still represented
@jarredlkling Matt Hoffman comes to mind also, but I wouldn't know any overall consensus opinions about his success outside Oklahoma. Matt has always looked out for the locals.
I got to briefly meet and speak with Ryan at X-Games here in Austin a few years ago. Nyjah Huston ran from all of the little kids, while Ryan hung around and took pictures, talked, and was just clearly so thankful for all of his fans and the youth who looked up to him. The mark was clearly left on him and he never forgot. A good man and a fucking monster skater.
I can't hate on Houston for that he doesn't seem like he could compute speaking with kids. 😂😂 but Ryan has tremendous character.
I mean they were likely at very different points in their career as well. Around that time, Ryan was not still in the shot of winning contests, so he had more time to engage with his fans. Nyjah on the other hand had to be serious because he’s gunning for wins still. And I’ve heard many kids say Nyjah is always chill and down to sign their board lately. Nyjah also did not have a very traditional childhood and his dad didn’t allow him to socialize with anyone except his siblings. It definitely took Nyjah a while to adjust socially when he came back to America, in addition to the trauma of having an abusive father literally kidnap him away from his few friends and sponsors in Cali. Take all that stuff into account, Ryan had massive support from top guys in the industry growing up, like Tony. Nyjah today seems like a humble and genuinely good guy. Maybe not as charismatic as Ryan but very few skaters are. I can say for certain Nyjah has developed a love for his fans and I think it’s one reason he created his own deck brand. Every contest lately I see Nyjah signing and interacting with fans before and after the event. These guys have a job to do at the end of the day, and I’m glad Nyjah has been able to work through some his issues with his father’s abuse. I can see being afraid of kids that age just due to what he himself went through at that age.
must be nice to have such supportive parents
Tony Hawk went to a random kid's birthday party and it turns out that kid grew up and backside flipped El Toro! Crazy.
These were my 2 idols growing up skating I grew up playing Tony’s games and wanting to meet him and grew up wanting to meet and be just like sheckler I didn’t care about how people thought of him he is literally the goat of skateboarding people just didn’t like how good he was and that fact that he was good looking so people associated him with a pretty rich boy who was given everything in life when I’m reality he might of had a well off financial situation in life but he earned his spot in skating and that’s all that matters
I remember Skate Street. I was so bummed when it closed.
I was in junior high school when I moved to Calaveras Hills in Carlsbad and had Tony as a neighbor, he was always super cool, and all the other skaters that would be there like Ray Underhill, Kevin Staab, Joe Johnson, Chris Black.......... It was totally fucking awesome.
Man, i would eat ass for that shit. You've seen such a nice crew!
That YMCA was a ridiculously awesome Park. I skated it once it was badass tough
Tony is a fn legend going to a childs party just to get them hyped what a G
So sick. Radness all around.
Tony was the guy all the guys talked about, but Ryan was the guy that all the girls talked about. To see this, is quite a childhood dream come true
It's also interesting hearing Ryan talk about these positive adult influences. In the past Americans kept to our age groups to a dramatic effect. It's not helpful. Youth keeps us sharp and agile, and age keeps us from repeating mistakes. I always felt like as a kid, people were saying, "When you're an adult" then when I was a young adult, it felt like, "Well, you're young". I go out of my way to talk to people of all ages as equals, and not talk down to kids and young adults. I've met some single digit aged kids that are 100% smarter than a lot of adults, that's just a fact, like it or not.
These three dudes are legendary
Thats awesome. I would be freaking out too
Jason, please do an episode about the making of Whiskey 2.
I’m getting EVH Frankenstrat vibes from that furniture piece in the middle
Supportive parents go a long way is my take away with this clip.
Rich parents **
@@bored2323 idk, but you can be supportive of your kids even if you are not rich and they still come out doing well. Look at Lewis Hamilton, his family was a working class family.
On the opposite side of that is Nyjah Huston. When he was on the cusp of becoming a top street skater his dad literally kidnapped him to Puerto Rico away from his mother and the industry in California. All his sponsors had to drop him (Element, DC, etc.). His dad did this with selfish intent, as he tried to start the deck brand I&I with Nyjah’s name. It took roughly a year or two for his mother to regain custody and bring him back to Cali. She was completely broke to the point they couldn’t afford their hotel room at the very first Street League contest. Rob Dyrdek validated the story that he covered their room that night. Nyjah wins the contest the next day for $150,000! Literally changed his whole family’s life at the age of 15, such a clutch performance.
It’s amazing to have supportive parents like Ryan’s, it’s also amazing to see examples like young Nyjah overcoming his abusive father in a rags to riches story. When Nyjah got back to Cali he wasted no time putting out NBDs and insane street footage on a level nobody had ever seen. Kid was powerful from a young age, same as Ryan. Neither of these guys deserved the hate they have been given by some of the skate community.
I like Lewis Hamilton as another example, there’s only one other current F1 driver that did not come from a wealthy family like him. I’d argue Lewis is the most grounded of all the F1 drivers and gives a much wider perspective in interviews. His family was not broke but his dad still had to work 2-3 jobs to support his karting career until the Mercedes-McLaren sponsor money started coming.
Whats the name of the skate video called that I seen where Tony gets dunked into a garbage can full of something ?
Sheck looks great, his face looks leaner and more youthful👍🏻
Shout out skatestreet Ventura, such a fun park
Sheckler like top 5 street skater of all time.. he has done huge shit
so great haha
What is Tony talking about? 27 years ago was 1996 tons of people were skating. I know I was and so were all my friends. There were big skater brands out and everything. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater came out in 1999 shit was poppin in the mid to late 90s.
Dude, athletes have revisionist history like a motherfucker... Or they're just straight up liars. But yeah, skating was huge 27 years ago.
it wasn't until proskater and Thrashers game out that's when skateboarding boomed really high into the early 2000s and was the best time of my life. I got to meet loads of pro skaters and wanted to go pro then got on drugs and alcohol which messed up my skating. I would love to go back in a time machine and watch myself skate with my friends as we were like a family. 2000 to 2006 was probably the best era of skating as there were so many good guys that were innovating street skating so much.
Project 8 did sum too 😁
6LBS OF SOUND
"i guarantee you took it"
Holy crap. I'm not a skater, but I grew up with both of you all basically, one as someone to look up to, and one to look at and say, "Ok kid, doing nice!" I'm 45, and I barely remember what Tony is talking about, but wow, do people know that "street course" used to be a BIG thing? I remember exactly what he's talking about, and I've only seen it from 70s era skateboard videos. ua-cam.com/video/72diYopL2t8/v-deo.html
Yea, Ryan had hella haters and jealous fans... dude, seems pretty cool... But I remember them days towards the end of the video
It was popular back then 😂 it just became a whole new thing over the last 15years
Wasn't crazy popular, the THPS games hadn't come out yet which is when skating for us late 80s/early90s kids fucking exploded
I hate how Jason talks about Ryan like he’s not there…..so weak
Listening to how he was influenced as a kid by Tony hawk makes me sad to see tik tok and the influence kids have on them now
Ryan still looks like hes 8 years old. No offense, thats a good thing.
33? This guy is 8 or 52. No telling which
Who wears a RedBull hat? Is this interview sponsored?
Ryan is sponsored by redbull..?
Tony, please, we love you soooo much but, please, LET YOUR GUESTS TALK, please. Thank you. Step back, and let them talk.
The point of this clip was to hear Tony's side of the story lol
I get what you're saying, but two things to consider are Tony often comes with something related to the topic that we would not have known nor would have been brought up on its own and then Tony was soft spoken for decades, let the man be out of his shell.
Crazy to think these guys were skating in Ventura, my hometown
So tony is a child groomer as well? Im hardly surprised
I love when guys get leg tattoos, with another guy who has head tattoos. I’m guessing they have rich families. Oh no nvm. They do have rich families. They were able to do a hobby for work
what is your point Jerry?
@@djhart25 nothing mean. I wish everyone on earth could do what they love for a living and NEVER have to seek employment. Truly. It’s not that way though
@@jerrypiper3936 gonna ask what the other guy did. Whats your point? Are you just venting because you dont have a rich family?
@jerrypiper3936 plenty of other pro skaters came from nothing.
Sounds like your bitter if not a bit jealous at their freedom. It’s understandable but come on, be better!
