He has funny wordplay and charisma on the mic so he can for sure make good, catchy music, I just think now that he has that freshman release out, he gotta evolve his sound a bit so he can shed that “Yeat clone” moniker. Trippie had to do the same to escape the “Uzi clone” moniker (yes, people really was saying Trippie was biting Uzi back in the day). Also I just think people don’t believe in his come up, there are so many artists that, by the definition of what the internet defines as an “industry plant”, make it into the mainstream without people even realizing, but Ian’s come up was too calculated, too well executed that it didn’t seem like a kid in his basement grinding to make it, it felt like a rich kid who had a bunch of money who was able to just buy promo and high quality production to buy his way to the top. While I know he’s been making music for a long time and I don’t agree with that logic of him being a plant, it’s all about perception in the court of public opinion and rn people in rap just aren’t getting behind it (I think over time, if he stays consistent then he can overcome this period).
