    Thank you. This is very helpful as I am a newbie with wire. I found a "Wild Wire"jig with 16 spools of wire at a local second hand shop. There weren't any directions. It was in a clear plastic bag. I am very excited about adding a new craft to my repertoire of crafts.

    Wow! That’s so cool! I wasn’t expecting to learn so many things in in 5 min. 😸 I’ve been using wire cutters 50 years and never gave any thought to the back and front being different let alone the flush side up gives a lot nicer cut ❤️

    The jig now comes with plastic end caps to put on the pins on the underside to keep them from moving around. Love my wire jig!

      The plastic end caps still come off while wrapping. I bought one of these yesterday and will be returning it. Not easy to use at all.

    after cutting off the excess of your wire before you turn the ends in, remove the sharp burrs with needle file and and some emery, polish the end. If you use a a metal hammer, and a metal block you will mar up the the piece making with tool marks, use a rawhide mallet, a nylon block, and nylon block to place on top of the piece and hit that. otherwise you have to remove those marks later. If you are going to make wire jewelry like make sure you order hard wire.

    Given that the jig base is aluminum, and assuming the pins are steel, one could put large flat magnets under the base to keep the pins in place and not wiggle as much. These could be hot-glued in place. Try K&J Magnetics for large flat magnets. If using non-ferrous metals (copper) the magnet won't hold the wire; steel wire will be held in place.

    • @MichellesHandmadeCreations
      @MichellesHandmadeCreations 7 років тому

      Great idea. Thanks. Gonna try some of the magnets I get in the mail for your suggestion before cutting a magnet sheet to fit my jig.

    • @miketripoli7621
      @miketripoli7621 7 років тому +1

      "Fridge" magnets won't do it; simply not strong enough. You need some strong, rare earth magnets (Neodymium or such). Check out K&J as I said...

    Feedback:
    1. Please measure out wire for any project so we don't waste.
    2. Don't cover up last screenshots showing wire projects with your large links all over the screen. This is rude. Put links on left side and leave screen viewable.

    I just got the Thing-A-Ma JIG. I think I'll love it to make my own design shapes, but the package doesn't say what the little clear plastic rings are for, though I see one person addressed this. I just tried putting one on the peg below the plate (under side) and it seems to stabilize the pins. This should be included in the video and on the package!

    I was going to order a thing a ma jig until I saw this video of how wobbly the pegs are. If all the models are that wobbly I suggest making your own jig at home using wooden blocks and small nails but rather than removing the nails, make several permanent jigs you can use over and over...

    • @ethereal369
      @ethereal369 2 роки тому

      I did this a few years ago. I made a jig with a wooden block & nails. I cut the nail heads off with a Drexel tool. It works well as a permanent jig in which you make pieces repeatedly, like earrings.

    This is the first time I have seen a "wire jig".. and it looks like it would be great to use to make the hard to shape type shapes. Do you have these in wood? The reason I ask is that the metal looks slippery and I can see the wire slipping off too easily while trying to wrap the wire around the individual pegs. Wood might be easier with less slippage.

    Where are the plastic pieces for the back of the pegs? Also starting in the middle makes waste of wire.

    • @FireMountainGems
      @FireMountainGems  6 років тому +2

      We didn't use the backing pieces in this video to cut down on visual clutter. Some brands also do not include backing blocks or pins--they just utilize "stepped" pins to hold in place.
      We're glad you pointed out the wire issue! When using jigs, jewelry makers can certainly cut down on wire waste by beginning their coils at the ends of the available length. However, if you're just starting out, don't feel bad if you take a little more wire length to learn the skill set. The more you do it, the more efficient you'll get!

      This was only a very basic lesson on how wire jigs are meant to be used. She only showed you some samples of what can be done. It was NOT a lesson on all the designs she has ever done. You can check out other videos here or on many other sites for designs or you can actually use a jig to design your ideas.
