  • Just a very basic explanation of how a 3∅ switchgear works. Obviously there's scores of other details on how it works, other features, installation, grounding, different types of systems, etc., but the main concept of a 3 phase switchgear is still typically always the same.

    Great video !!
Thank you , not every electrician have the opportunity to have this exposure in real life!!

    Great video ..thx!
Coupl notes: 1)The gears looks like switchboard, switchgear has drawout breakers with back clearance.
    2) If the switchboard is the service entry, neutral will be needed at the switchboard to carry faults back to the utility source even if all connected loads are 3ph 3w

The power does not go through the meter. The meter stabs go to the current transformers. The potential transformers may also be remote or in meter. Pulling meter does not interrupt service like it does on 400a or less residential.

It's a start. You need to go deeper

...good presentation...but I get butterflies in my stomach when you touch the non-energized bus bars...;-)

Depends on the state you live in. In states like California you must go through a State approved apprenticeship program. In California it is a 5 year program.

Few questions. Why would anybody buy three phase four wire switchgear for three phase three wire service? If it is three phase three wire, why would you connect grounding electrode conductor and electrodes to neutral bar?
Or, is it really three phase four wire service? The lights in the steel plant are not 277 volt?

Because previously this steel plant had a 480V Corner Grounded Delta, using a separate X-former/service for the 120V loads in the office areas. This service is only supplying 3 phase 480V loads, but with this service upgrade they are going from the Corner Grounded Delta to a more standard 4W transformer with the neutral for optional 277V loads.
So to answer your question, they bought this because of the standard type X-former they replaced the out-of-date CGD with (which is why they didn't have a grounded conductor before).

Also, the grounded conductors are terminated on a separate buss from the grounding conductors, but both are bonded inside this gear.

@@WinningSideProductions So, it was a 480/277 volt 3 ph 4 w service and you did it correctly! Awesome. Respectfully, Kevin

What is the difference between a switchgear and an automatic transfer switch?

Switchgear is where the utility power comes in, goes through the meter, and from there supplies the building. An ATS is a device that, in the event of a utility power loss, switches the building's power from the utility power to emergency power, supplied by a backup generator, if the building is equipped with one.
