Is Kung Fu Panda 4 Necessary?

- The first trailer for Kung Fu Panda 4 has finally released after months of leaks and speculation. But despite Dreamworks' steady and impressive track record when it comes to sequels, something about Kung Fu Panda 4 feels off. Is this really a necessary sequel?

Its quite weird that the new characters look like they’re from other movies, Zhen looks like she’s from Zootopia, the pangolin is from Ice Age, and Chameleon is from Rango
Yeah was thinking of Zootopia
Same here
Lmfao you described it perfectly. I couldn’t come up with words to describe it
indeed, look out of place
Then you don't understand Rango's art direction, i mean just look at her design she's perfectly symmetrical, don't say this just cuz it's a chameleon lmfao
none of the writers from Kung fu Panda 2 and 3 returned for 4. That's huge red flags man, I'll wait for this with Caution instead of hype. Potential to be a cash grab. having the old Writers matter.
I agree. I toned down my hype after reading this. I hope it's just good as the three other movies.
What? I liked the 2nd but hated the 3rd movie. Did they actually write that?
i looked up the writers and it says it is written by jonathan aibel and glenn berger and those are the guys that wrote all the other movies

It looked to me like the lesson Po has to learn in this movie is that there is good in people who "are the bad guy". So far the villains have been straightforward bad guys that Po has to defeat. But Zhen is a criminal, Po has to recruit an army of criminals, and Tai Lung seemingly being back and having his kung fu removed. He might have to see the good in bad people in order to defeat the villain.
Maybe the idea of Po being a "spiritual leader" is that he can't just save people from the bad guys, but he needs to inspire people to be better than they are. Zhen will need to become a hero. Perhaps Tai Lung will have some sort of redemption arc.
Ohhh I think this idea would be wonderful! I hope it happens
Oh I like this
Se escribe shen y tienes razón sería bueno ver a po dándose cuenta que no todo es blanco y negro solo son grises
Yeah Tai Lung being in the first poster tells me that he's gonna have an arc of some kind, maybe Po helps him learn a brand new style unique to only him or it might be an arc of him and Shifu reconciling, either way I'm very interested in how they handle Tai Lung
Hm, this does make me somewhat hopeful, but I'm keeping my expectations low for now.
Idk but I'm excited to see Tai Lung returning, I hope he has a bigger role than just showing up for a bit to have his kung fu stolen then sent away. Seems like a good foundation for a redemption arc for him, where at the end Po possibly passes the title of Dragon Warrior to him with Po taking on his bigger responsibilities.
I am extremely down for the Tai Lung redemption arc but him becoming Dragon Warrior would completely invalidate it imo. His redemption literally has to be him learning to be ok NOT being the dragon warrior
@@jeremytewari3346 That makes sense, but it can also be said that at the time he wanted to be Dragon Warrior in the first movie he “wasn’t ready” but then he gets his redemption and learns important qualities such as patience. Either way I hope he gets his redemption.
Edit: I was partially right
Watching this in the future, kung fu panda 4 was alright ending was 😪
This feels like a Disney move, which is ironic knowing that the person that started Dreamworks used to work for Disney and despises them
It should be noted that Kung Fu Panda 2's trailer exhibited similar traits to KF4 trailer. It used Pump It by Black Eyed Peas as a track. They also have a formula for pausing the music for gags. The difference is that the lighting seems more dramatic and it has a massive set piece at the end. However, at least from the trailers I found, it doesn't introduce Shen, one of the best things about the movie.
The KF2 trailer on YT shows Shen, however it is admittedly so quick that it can be forgiven to have missed it
I am so glad I never saw the trailers for the second film or the first, so I didn't get any sort of spoilers or wrong impressions.
The thing that worries me is that the director is Mike Mitchell, and he's directed films like;
- "Trolls"
- "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part"
- "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water"
- "Shrek Forever After"
Don't get me wrong, they're fine, but they never really grew on me. And, bringing back all the villains (INCLUDING LORD FUCKING SHEN) concerns me.
Let's just hope he's fond enough of the story to give an actual continuation.
Shrek Forever After is excellent. I've been on that camp even before Schaff made his video on it.
"lord fucking shen" that made me laugh a lil
I believe in Mitchell. To be honest, Shrek 4 was great! Y’all are just mean. Giving an emotional finale (at least it was a finale then) to one of DreamWorks’ series. Sponge out of water, Mitchell actually directed the love action sequences of that movie which were really good, you can’t deny that, and I know I might get so much flack for this but: even Trolls wasn’t that terrible. It still had its good moments in that movie, though not being the best movie ever, I’d say it’s a decent movie that has some things to remember. But that is simply just me
Didnt he also direct Alvin and the Chipmunks 3?
Kung Fu Panda 4 definitely feels like a reharsh of part 3 with slightly better graphics
Kung fu panda 3 came out... 7 YEARS AGO!!!!! HOW!?!?!

Seeing the chamelion transform into Po and she eats Tai Long's Chi, energy, or soul and how Shifu said he's not going to be the dragon warrior, is it going to be the next Skywalker or Indiana Jones Bait and Switch? I don't know how I feel about this movie. I'm very skeptical. The only bright side is how creative the villain is. Though i do wonder how her powers exactly work. Does she eat their soul and die, or their willpower, Chi, energy to fight?
I just hope its not like 3, but more like 1 and 2. Thats honestly how it decides it. 3s' villain wasn't a real villain, and po's journey was nothing like the others. It didn't ask critical questions like the first two.
KFP 1: "What makes me special, what makes me different than anyone else. What makes ME, NOT a LOSER?"
KFP2: "Who am I? Does where do I come from effect that? What am I, if I wasn't born here?"
KFP3: "uhh, who am i again... but worse?"
So it all entirely depends on the above. ^ Instead of who am I, or What am I, maybe they should answer "What should I do? Who should I become?"
"If I am the most powerful kung-fu master to ever be, and I am the determiner of where kung fu should go... how could I lead this? How can I effect this generation?"
That would be amazing to answer.
But if the villain is just another Kai where the only bad-ass-ness we get from him is the same replayed slowed down reverbed pop-song... it doesn't need to exist.
Love how the "play Yakuza" end statement is just a standard of your videos atp xD
5:56
This is something I rarely say, but, even kai at least works in a more fun way. Instead of just being "oh, I am that character" Kai at least had an unique fighting style
I think the first 3 movies represents the body, the mind, and the spirt. I have no clue what this movie is supposed represent lol
I know I'm in a minority, but personally, I'm open to more Kung Fu panda movies beyond the third entry. I have heard many people say a franchise most have a conclusion, but really, as long as there is a good story to tell, you can make as many movies you like.
For this movie, I’m going to go into it they way I’ve gone into a lot of movies nowadays
Cautiously Optimistic, considering the change in Directors from Kung Fu Panda 2/3 to Kung Fu Panda 4
Kung Fu Panda 4 is going to be Kung Fu Panda 3 2.0 from what i getting of the trailer.
Jeffrey Katzenberg still thinks we don't need a sequel to Megamind or Monsters vs Aliens.
remember that most trailers are used to trick us and it makes us make ideas of what the movie is going to be about
Yea, and I also feel as if people are already guessing that the movie is going to be bad even though we got a single trailer. Like come on..
@@avengerboy2171 past villians brought in, no furious 5, current villian has similar powers to the past movie just seems off. Like I want it to be great but my hopes are super high
My biggest concern for this film is the new Megamind sequel that is coming out. All it shows me is that Dreamworks has no problem butchering their most beloved movies for some quick cash which makes me worried they would do the same for Kung Fu Panda.
The concept of the movie isn't and if anything just shows how dry the barrel is for DreamWorks but I honestly have faith that the fourth movie could be good. I just hope they don't go the toy story route and make a fifth film.
They plan for 6
Yeah 4-6 will be Po’s journey as a master
I immediately thought of a better plot as well as a way to have old characters comeback.
And an easy way to setup the next movie.
- Someone who despises kungfu because during a battle a loved one of theirs was lost.
- Have that person dedicate their life to entering the Afterlife (I forget the proper name) to bring back all the characters who tried to Kill Po (Dragon Warrior aka the peak of kungfu).
- Have Po and everyone else go around defeating each character sending them back.
- End the move with Po doing some super heroic thing and someone young in the crowd sees this who could be an apprentice approach Po with fire in their eyes (figuratively speaking) asking him to teach them how to master Kung Fu, zoom in on Po, he smiles, opens his mouth, cut to credits.
Boom you have your entire movie.
I don't think that 4 movie is a must have but dreamwokrs proved that they came back to game after long break I hope that puss in boots and kung fu panda are a warmup before making another animated movies with new characters
Well since Puss in Boss 2 they’ve kinda flopped so who knows what this is gonna end up like
@@ajakakakak I hope they get back on the horse soon. Making more serious, less cookie-cutter movies is always a good remedy in going against the grain.
Dreamworks has always been up and down. Since they make a variety of films, they can miss a lot, but when they hit.. They hit hard. I'd say cautious optimism is better, as dreamworks hasn't milked as bad as Disney. We can only hope 🙏
0:11 I think you forgot that Ruby Gillman also exists.
Don't blame you at all.
I am actually afraid whether kung fu panda 4 will be had, bcs chameleon is like. I don't really see it becoming an interesting villain, we dont see the furious five. And like he said chameleon is kai 2.0 except she can take appearance of the chi stolen animal, also where is mr ping.
No not necessary, the should have stuck with the TV shows. I was nervous as soon as this movie was announced
I wamted a tai lung redemption story
There is actually a good reason why the character designs feel "off" in this movie when compared to the previous films. Nico Marlet, the character designer for the first three movies (and a ton of other Dreamworks films) isn't returning to work on this one. Since he has such a distinctive art style, its probably harder for the people hired to work on the fourth film to perfectly replicate his designs, and probably don't consider the sharpness or patterns as much as he would. I feel that the Chameleon herself and the lizards at least match the movie designs pretty well, but you can defiantly see that everyone else has became a bit "softer" looking in comparison.
"A good sequel is always welcome."
00:05 secs on the vid, no, it's not necessary at all.
Im not gonna hold my breath. The last time I was hyped for an animated movie was raya and the last dragon. It wasnt good. Then Encanto comes and I think "ok this is a disney cashgrab"
and then its fucking amazing
The lesson I have here is simple: Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
FINALLY, SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOESNT LIKE THE TRAILER
isn’t this what they did with the cars franchise? character we’re all familiar has an adventure with a new character that’s going to be their successor
I just had this random strange idea that what if Zhen, the fox Po had been bonding with throughout the movie, turned out to be a villiian and or betrays him at the end of the film? That might prompt enough story for the movies they plan to make after the fourth one, and certainly some character development. Though I doubt that is very likely lol.
The third movie was a reiteration of the main theme of the second movie.
So this new one probably won't be necessary.
here's an idea to keep The Chameleon unique
uhh make her creepy idk
intentionally having no personality and a blank face but still having her want to become a god.
Albiet unlike Kai, there's no real motive aside from her wanting to watch the world burn.
No se si es bueno tailung y shen son villanos geniales porque tenían razones de peso para serlo espero que si lo hacen chamaleona sea como jack hornet y no como la mayoría de villanos en marvel
Before I watch this I'll say: no we don't want a Kung fu panda, we NEED a Kung fu panda
0:29 my guy really sneaked in the smoothest transition mid-monolgue and thought we would never notice.
i just clicked, in the middle of the ad that plays, yes absolutely
It feels like an episode of the tv show with its generic story. Keeping the animation the same is fine but I believe it would have been improved had they given it puss the last wish treatment because even if the story is mid atleast it’ll look good visually.
I'd disagree on the animation, cause Kung Fu Panda is entirely different (with it being Chinese inspired) so the animation is bound to have its own creative style (evident in the 2d parts of the second movie)
Well, the trilogy worked perfectly fine. We don't NEED a 4th movie per se, but as long as they have a story to tell and a theme, there is no harm in making it anyway. Given the long break between 3 and 4 it's not like they turned it into a Ubisoft-like mass production.
I have a sinking feeling that I'm going to end up loving the new character Zen... only to get absolutely slaughtered on social media as a result.
Its been 8 years... Time flies...
I'd say more Kung Fu Panda sequels are necessary at least until Po and Tigress finally kiss.
so tldr, shareholders in dreamworks needed new yachts and cars and whatever. This is called "milking" a content. Welcome to the world of greed
Maybe the conflict should focus on Po has to make a huge decision finding the next dragon warrior. He should be at peace at the end but maybe the realization once he not the dragon warrior anymore. Who will watch the valley and protect it. Po is a good teacher but teaching this new character who might be different from Po and probably doesn’t believe she can do any good but has a hard time believing in herself or she reckless when doing things. These are just my examples of what the plot could be. I really do like the new villain. Maybe swapping different fighting styles is more of mirroring them but her being better. I feel Po is going to lose to her a lot because maybe he will end up putting everything on him to save their world.
It's turning into the franchise I originally blew it off as.
Kung Fu Panda as a franchise does have potential, but I really feel like Po's journey has concluded by the third film. I would have loved more focus being put on the Furious Five now, they kind of got side-lined (especially in 3), but that was Po's story so I didn't mind but yeah, would have loved a prequel with them (I know we got an origin story, but between that and the first film a lot had to have happened, give me a story about how they formed and their ties in the group!)
it looks like an extended version of the 3rd movie.
(To the tune of jingle bells) No no no, no no no, no no no no no, no no no, no no no no, no no no no no no noooooo! Merry Christmas everyone
it may not be neccessary, but what matters the MOST is that it's good. as long as it's good, it is worth it. i don't want it to be a repeat of toy story 4.
We are about to witness the downfall of king fu panda
bro trolls was cooking tho with the songs
i just hope this little fox would be the final villain, since she is "wanted"
Kungfu Panda is going to have a total of 6 movies split between 2 trilogies. Its been planned real early on
I think a much better choice would have been to make a prequel, either about Oogway or Shifu or the Furious Five pre-Po, especially because all these characters have become more irrelevant as the trilogy has gone on. Of course these films would never happen though because they wouldn’t have Po, who is very marketable and loved by kids.
This video basically summarizes all my thoughts about how I feel about this movie I'm still going to go into it with confidence but I've been saying since the trailer came out that I really don't like it to be honest and all my friends think I'm crazy for not liking it because the previous movies were really good but to me just because the previous movies were good doesn't mean anything about this movie being good and at least from what we've seen so far I'm just really am not into what they're doing It doesn't seem like it's going to be that great
how is kung fu panda 3 already 7 years old???? it feels like only 2 years... damn time goes by so fast
After the quality of the third movie, I will never begrudge a redemption movie. Bring it on.
I think 4 should have been po trying to find a successor like oogway and then the 5th could have been about developing his successor and the 6th ending the story or both finding a successor and developing him in the forth and then 5 raping things up
I remember reading, I think after the first film but at least really early on that they intended for a 6 film series. I hoped they'd do it like this.
4: Po now has to step up to a more permanent leadership position as Shifu is dying/about to ascend. It's Shifu's sendoff film (as I think his voice actor is getting on in years) with Tai Lung brought back and eventually reconciling with him.
5. Po has to train new students in a one-on-one manner, different from the generalized training he gave in the third movie. One of his student goes evil (in an echo of tai lung) or some such event happens and is defeated but not killed. Either is redeemed or becomes the villain of the next movie.
6. Year and year later. Po is now in Oogway's position. Either his student from the last film or another villain comes to challenge him (or alternately, perhaps there is no villain, I don't know) but end the film with him ascending and passing on the torch to his students. Final scene is him reuniting with all the good characters of the franchise in the afterlife/spirit realm.
We'll have to see how well it goes.
I hope this series not like ice age 4 & 5
Yes it’s necessary. We get to revisit our childhood. What’s unnecessary was megamind 2
Looking how megamind 2 went the fact that it doesn't look like the Kung Fu panda rip off from the amazing world of gumball is already a good sign
W video, kung fu panda looks mid imo
How so
9:13 This one could've gone to where Poe is struggling to accept he will no longer be the dragon warrior and when choosing his successor he has trouble letting go and passing the torch on so he decides to set high standards no one can achieve, that would be a good opening plot.
0:01 thank you for reminding us that dreamworks still makes awful fart jokes
I JUST WANT TO SEE PO DOING TAI LUNG MOVES THRU THAT VILLAIN LIZARD IN THIS MOVIE
Kungfu panda 1 introduction of characters + story
Kungfu panda 2 fantastic story/ending + ideas
Kungfu panda 3 family alive amazing story
Kungfu panda 4 no connected story...
They should have left kungfu panda a triology
Well I’m kinda hoping to see Tai Lung being redeemed.
If it's Amazing. Yes it is needed.
If it's bad. We can pretend it does not exist. Saying they went to far.
Han considerado que talvez dreamworks esta usando la fórmula disney y chamaleona quien parece ser la villana de la película al final se revele que no es asi?
When disney does it? It sucks most of the time. But dreamwork? HELL YEAH! If they think they can do it correctly and create another great triology, i would give them a chance.
So no one seems to have pointed this out but Shifu’s staff has no cracks it looks perfectly mended which was a pretty significant event in the first film. I’m not one to nitpick on small things usually but at the very least this seems kinda like a red flag to me. Another thing is that this is kinda insulting to the franchise like Tai Lung literally took down an armed prison by himself without a scratch he literally man handled the furious five yet he was beaten that easily? Kai was a warrior on par with Oogway a guy who quite literally defeated all the deceased kung fu masters and walked through rivers of blood in his time yet he’s also going to be man handled? It’s kinda insulting to the previous villains if they love to a bunch of armed thugs. I hope they give us some sort of logical explanation on how she’s able to beat them because swarming them with numbers would never have worked on them.
I hope this movie doesn't fall into the "On Stranger Tides" trap and feel like an unnecessary spinoff. That movie felt like a spinoff because it didn't have any relevant characters from the last movie (except Barbosa and Gibbs), Jack didn't have a motivation or goal in the overall plot of the movie (he didn't even want to get to the fountain of youth in the first place), and a lot of elements within the movie felt like lesser versions of stuff we've already seen. You really have to make sequel feel bigger than the last one in both storytelling and scale. I see that this movie is trying to do that with The Chameleon with them being able to take the Kung-Fu from all of Po's previous villains (which yes I agree is very similar to kai), but you need to make every aspect of the movie bigger, not just the villain; the characters, the emotions, the motivations, and the stakes, they need to be built up in a logical and connected way. While the movie isn't even out yet, it does feel like it's going to be unnecessary, but I'm hopeful that it will prove me wrong and be a deserved sequel.
They wouldn't DARE make a HTTYD 4! They wouldn't! Surely not! Would they? Come on! Please? PLEASE?!
I don't want to be a stick in the mud but everything about this trailer just felt....off. I feel like you explained literally everything that gives me that "off" feeling. I don't think trailers should dictate what a movie is 100% going to be but it does showcase what they want you to see and what they wanted me to see hasn't impressed me. It just feels super by the numbers and unneeded, especially with what feels like a lot of incoming fanservice without actual value and oh boy am I sick of that. Dreamworks has built the rapport to have me believe this movie will be very good but right now I'm doubtful that it will be a good Kung Fu Panda sequel.
In my opinion, no. It seemed they already completed Po’s arc to become a master. He practically made everyone in the valley of peace a kung fu professional, so there’s nothing more to tell honestly.
Mr. Krabs: money 🦀 💵
I think what's really holding back this story is the reliance on Po as a character. I wasn't a big fan of 3 (I really dislike it but that's another can of worms), but his arc essentially completed at that point. The whole "he has to learn how to become a spiritual leader" bit came off as forcing Po to _again_ learn something new, like the previous three movies did.
I honestly think it would've been more compelling for "Kung Fu Panda 4" to start way in the future, where Po is older and more sage-like, but has to pass off the mantle of "Dragon Warrior" to someone younger. This would solidify the parallel that Zhen and Po have with Po and Shifu, having a wiser and more experienced Po face similar challenges that Shifu had when training him. This would ultimately be a more natural story progression for the characters involved, and it'd be a great opportunity to introduce a cast of entirely new characters too.
[Heck, with this premise, second movie could have Po and Zhen forming a new "Furious Five", and then have the third movie where this newly formed group faces a villain that puts them to the test, perhaps upping the stakes by defeating Po].
The reason why they didn't do this? Because it has to be Kung Fu _Panda_. It has to be Po. It has to be Jack Black. They've got a formula, and they're insistence on sticking with will likely stifle the storytelling potential of the franchise. They aren't willing to take that much of a risk.
As for Zhen, I like the concept of her character, and I do like how her design uses duller colors (albeit, I agree she could use more markings to make her more consistent with the other character designs), but I'm a bit worried they'll botch the execution. It's hard to tell from the trailer though.
you do know that ki took ti lungs chee too
whoever had the idea to not include the furious five should be fired, hired and fired again

I didn't know Kung Fu Panda 4 was coming out bossman
I don’t even care if it is, we need it, and I’m 24 lmao
Not to be that person, but the wolf is actually a fox
My biggest problem with the trailer is that it feels like a Netflix movie with a “rag time team of unlikely hero’s” with Poe and Akwafina (who yeah I’m really tired of to). However..maybe the movie can be like the Spiderman No Way Home of the movies. Redeeming the villains and giving them closure. I’m really hoping!..please be good!
I find the idea of redeeming the previous villains interesting, especially since Tai Lung having a redemption arc would be good and we might see him reconcile with Shifu.
Not sure about Shen. Maybe he regrets his attempted genocide of the pandas and helps Po fight against the villain.
Not sure about Kai since I feel like Kai would be the least sympathetic.

I don't need it but I definitely want it.
They're running out of ideas for new movies, but they want quick money because it's easier to ruin legendary films than to invent new ones
The side cast should be spotlighted more.
To be fair, even the original people who were writing/making the movies wanted 6 movies. They wanted to do two trilogies. One would show Po’s journey to becoming a master, with 1-3, and these next ones would show his journey as a master, in 4-6.
