Very cool video Tom. One of the best times in my life was the punk/ new wave 77 - 82 era . We got an eviction notice in early 1980 for playing the English Beat album over and over on HIGH volume. Oh and the Pretender’s album also !
The Church and The Replacements released some singles in the late 1980s, one of which I bought, the Church’s “Along The Milky Way.” The Replacements’ “I’ll Be You” was another great track.
'Under The Milky Way' is a terrific tune. One of my favorites from the mid-late '80s.
Great pick for the Stone Roses. You’re video is exactly 35 years from its release. I remeber because I was working in HMV & we played it all day.All my friends who were into Metallica, Slayer etc were asking me to tape it for them. Still got my vinyl copy from that day. I’ll add Harbourcoat ‘Reckoning’
Great choices. The Dream Syndicate is outstanding. I've always loved Of Skins and Heart, and did not realize that there was a US version. Will definitely check that out.
As an Australian, I think the US version of The Church's first album is better than the Aussie one, their second album The Blurred Crusade is excellent.
💕👍
mainstream-rock in the 80`s was so boring and dull, but alternative-rock made the 80`s a golden age...fantastic collection of albums !!!
you mentioned "the unguarded moment" in an earlier video and i was fully unaware of it and thought they'd arrived with "under the milky way" nearly a decade later. i did know the pretenders, smiths, bangles, english beat, aztec camera, rem, j and m chain, replacements and x way back when but i certainly missed out on the earlier church track. i loved kendra smith and saw steve wynn perform with paul westerberg about 17 years ago.
"Spellbound" Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Flying Saucer Safari" Suburban Lawns, "Love Plus One" Haircut 100.
Is Chrome Injury on the US version of The Church, it’s on Of skins and heart, it’s a killer song. New Day Rising by Husker Du is a great opener, that album also contains Celebrated Summer, one of the best songs by anyone anywhere.
Chrome Injury is not on the U.S. version of The Church debut. Yes, great track.
I consider Pretenders' debut a 1979 album, which is fine, because I like The Adulteress better than Precious anyway! Clubland by Elvis, Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil, Don't Bang the Drum by the Waterboys, Runaway by XTC, Burning Down the House by Talking Heads, Romeo Had Juliette by Lou Reed, Cosmic Thing by the B52s, Since You're Gone by the Cars, Don't Let Them Break You Down by Graham Parker, Tomorrow's World by Joe Jackson, Know Your Rights by the Clash, Come On Every Beatbox by Big Audio Dynamite. Since we're on a roll with Mick Jones here, I don't know if this counts as alternative but Central Park and West by Ian Hunter, produced by Mr. Jones. Odd, in the promo frame for this video you show New Day Rising and Daydream Nation, so I was expecting the opening tracks from those albums. Great tunes! I would probably go with Hungry Wolf by X, IOU by the Replacements. Great concept, Tom.
Loved all your selections except The Smiths...I always had a problem with Morrissey before it was fashioable...We were one of the bands on that Bangles show at The Palace...Knew them quite well in those days...Peace and Love, Terry Tutor
Also gotta add the song Icehouse by Australian band Flowers, as a great lead song, from 1980.
Hi Tom:
I also listened to strictly alternative music on the '80s. Like you, I highly appreciate a great opening track! I totally agree on "Precious" from The Pretenders, what a great opener! Among my favorite opening tracks are:
"Begin the Begin," REM from Life's Rich Pageant.
"Just Like Fire Would," The Saints from All Fools Day.
"Up the Down Escalator (There Must Be Something Wrong Boys)," Chameleons U.K. from Script of the Bridge.
"Mad Jack," Chameleons U.K. from Strange Times.
"Uncomplicated," Elvis Costello and The Attractions from Blood and Chocolate.
"Church Not Made With Hands," The Waterboys from Pagan Place.
"Living for Something," Ronald Koal and The Trillionaires from self-titled album.
"Escalator of Life," Robert Hazard and The Heroes from self-titled E.P.
"I've Been Waiting for Tomorrow," The The from Soul Mining.
"Always the Sun," The Stranglers from Dreamtime.
"Love for Sale," Talking Heads from True Stories.
"Anna-LETMEINLETMEOUT," Trio from self-titled E.P.
"Spirit Got Lost," Mental As Anything from Creatures of Leisure.
"Capitol Radio One," The Clash from Black Market Clash.
"Positively Lost Me," The Rave-Up's from Town 'n' Country.
"Jack the Ripper," The Raybeats from It's Only a Movie.
Great video Tom, fun topic!!!
Great List
I will only throw out 1 because it is off one of my top 10 albums
The Gun Club : Sex Beat off Fire of Love
I'll second your recommendation of High Land Hard Rain by Aztec Camera, a great collection of tuneful songs with poetic lyrics. Offhand, I can think of 2 more that I'd add to your list: "There She Goes Again" from Marshall Crenshaw's self-titled debut and "Black and White" from the dB's debut album Stands for Decibels..
@@tomrobinson5776 Yes, I love it. I think that every song on it is good.
The Headmaster Ritual - The Smiths
Oblivious - Aztec Camera
Begin The Begin - REM
Beyond Belief - Elvis Costello
A Girl Like You - The Smithereens
Hero Takes A Fall - The Bangles
Hang On St. Christopher - Tom Waits
I Will Dare - The Replacements
Bone Machine - Pixies
I Got You - Split Enz
I have more, Almost with you, by Church, from Blurred Crusade, Your Silent Face, first song on Power Corruption & Lies by New Order, also by NO, Love Vigilantes, lead song on the Lowlife album.
Yes, no doubt Pretenders began the ‘80s with a bang from that rocker debut. But I’ve always been partial to Space Invaders. I think that volume cranker would have also been a great opener. And I agree wholeheartedly with both Dream Syndicate and JaMC’s ‘ Psychocandy. ‘
‘ Just Like Honey ‘ is an everlasting gem from those guys. I thought I’d throw in ‘ Mad Jack ‘ as a spicy opener from the Chameleons Strange Times album. Another really good band who’s always flown underneath the radar. The 80s was just loaded with these types of groups.
No 'Blister In The Sun' from the self-titled debut album by Violent Femmes??!!
SACRILEGE! 🤬
Looking forward to this!
