    Join the Whalen Underwater crew as they explore the wreck of the U.S.S. Kittiwake in Grand Cayman. The Kittiwake was sunk as an artificial reef in 2011 and has quickly become one of the popular dive sites on the island.

    Chanticleer Class - Submarine Rescue
    overall length 251 ft 4 in (76.61 m)
    Launch July 10th, 1945
    Commissioned July 18, 1946
    Decommissioned September 30th, 1994
    Laid to rest January 5th, 2011
    Action report:
    July 20th, 1960, Support vessel to U.S.S. George Washington (CVN-73) for its first ballistic missile launch.
    April 23rd, 1984, Collision with USS Bergall (SSN-667) in Norfolk VA.
    1986, Recovered black box from space shuttle challenger.

    Zach! Super cool! I’m diving the Kittiwake tomorrow and went to search for some info on it and this was the first thing that came up! I was like “ I know that guy!” Nicely done. I’m sure I’ll appreciate it even more having watched your video. Jardayna, Surfrider, MA

    there are no other divers, did get a „private trip“ with sunset house? we travel in march to Cayman.

      We got very lucky being the first boat on the wreck so got it to our selves for about an hour, when the other dive boats showed up we headed up. Best tip for diving the wreck try to get there early.

      Kittywake was a submarine rescue vessel so she had to have banks of gas ready for a diving bell, decompression chambers as well as dive operations.

    free dive it from shore, free and I've lost count of the tiMes I've been alone (or with my group) at sunset with the whole ship just for us

      Next trip down there we plan on free diving the wreck, just need to work on mt breath hold a bit.

      Its not the same, there is something about a wreck with a story but artificial reefs are still fun to explore.
