    First! I am good with my Safire 189 for a while. Only reason I would change is if I start into wingsuiting at some point I will probably change to a more wingsuit friendly canopy like an Epicene Pro or something.

    I have 42 jumps and just got my own rig. Downsized from a 210 on rental gear to my rig which has a 170. My exit weight is 190 lbs. Probably not the smartest move, but I made it

      1.1WL isn't much at all. You'll be alright if you have the skills.

      @@sivonparansun going from a .90 straight to 1.12 can be quite jarring. There's a lot of bad habits you can have on a .9 especially when it comes to low turns that will get you fucked up at 1.1

      My first canopy after 31 jumps was a 168 pilot with 1.33 WL. Had no problems and looking back i still don't see a problem. Your downsize was objectively very traditional and conservative for someone moving forward from student gear.
      Canopy size (and model, obviously) is another factor to consider as the lines get shorter etc. Piloting a 107 and 170 canopy at the same wing load are two different games.

    I've recently Upsized back to my hurricane 135 from my first crossbraced canopy my sensei 121 after almost killing myself multiple times due to lack of respect for the dive, thinking I can sneak in a quick turn after missing my beeps...
    Lessons learned ---》know when to abandon the swoop.

    I have been watching with kind of no facial expressions trying to figure out if you were joking or being serious... Maybe a small discloser in the description would be appropriate for jumper with less experience who could take those advices for cash... Just my 2 cents.
    Some reason are valid though but not all... ;)
    Edit: ok I finished the video and realized you said just that hahaha. But still, for the viewers that don't get at the end, it would be great to have a small mention of your conclusion in the description. ;)

      Hey! Thank you for all your great videos, you truly are a gift to our community! All of the benefits to downsizing are real and valid, no matter how ridiculous they sound. Smaller rig, going faster, more range, looking cool, getting your own rig are all true consequences to downsizing and most beginners know this and have this in mind when they want to downsize, speaking based on what I've seen over the years. It's obvious that a beginner wants to go fast and look cool and there is no way around it. Beginners are tired of hearing the same old approaches to the topic of downsizing. If they want someone to tell them about how they need to do this and that and such and such to downsize they can find hundreds of videos and articles on the topic. My video simply takes what is already on their minds (the 5 "ridiculous" reasons to downsize) and contrasts them against their consequences. Smaller rig? More money spent. Going faster? Faster death. More range? Less time to make decisions. Looking cool? Losing respect. Getting your own rig? Hindering your progression. If I was to make a small mention in the description I'm not sure what it would be! Maybe "don't die :-)" If someone who was thinking about downsizing (and actually shouldn't) watches this video and gets to the conclusion that "yeah lets downsize to look cool" It might actually be helpful because their reckless mindset will finally come to the attention of the DZs ST-A when he pulls up to the DZ with a fresh katana.

      @@Frickflyers Thanks for your answer, but going fast and looking cool aren't good reasons haha. Myself first I don't want to downsize for the speed and looking cool with a broken ankle...not. If you knew the number of jumper struggling with their landings and the number of people who start to swoop and get hurt fast and soon in there progression.
      The mention I had in mind for your description may be like: "Always discuss your intent to downsize with an instructor in your dropzone or your DZO" ;)

      @@SkydiveVibes Actually those are good reasons! Going fast is fun, its why the sport of canopy piloting exists! One of the primary reasons why I downsized was to go faster, to have more fun and to compete. If "going faster" wasn't a good reason to downsize then people would never downsize, we would all fly 280sqft canopies. We want speed and adrenaline. That speed and fun might come at the cost of my life but thats why I invested so much time, dedication and money into getting coaching and learning and it's exactly why I am constantly incentivating people to get coaching and to learn because the need for speed will never die out in the heart of a fun jumper but they might die if they want to progress and dont get the coaching and mentorship necessary. I'm not saying you should downsize because you want to go faster, I'm saying that if you downsize going faster is a consequence, a very good one in my opinion. Also I think you are only talking about beginners and thats fine, but my videos are more designed towards all experience levels, ranging from recent A-licenses all the way to experienced swoopers and in most cases I dont think you should ask an instructor... Maybe for students sure AFF-I, T-Is, DZO's can give them guidelines on downsizing but for someone who wants to get a canopy smaller than 150 maybe they should talk to a respected canopy coach or the ST-A, not just any random instructor. But I will add the warning in the description of the video. Blue skies and stay awesome!

      @@Frickflyers & @Skydive Vibes, love both you channel's! I downsized to have more fun while playing under canopy and better penetration in turbulence. Its Substantial even from a 210 (1.0) to 190 (1.1ish).. but even at 1.1ish, I know if I botch a landing I'm getting hurt. Dont see a reason to go smaller at this point but we all trade safety for fun. Everyone will make that tradeoff differently =)
