Now THAT is a star. No voice to speak of, not a natural dancer, but talent, drive, and energy turned a faded movie star into a first-class musical comedy star. Brava, Lauren Bacall! You did it. 🥰

God, what a thrill. Seeing that remarkable woman and that remarkable scene again. They sure don't make stars like that any more!!! She, Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera. Do musicals get any better. Thanks so much for posting this masterpiece!!!

I'm surprised this was aired on Network TV with the gay bar scene intact..I mean even though we were busting down barriers with shows like 'All in the Family' and 'Maude'..this is a pleasant surprise

Good Lord, can you believe she did this eight performances for the run of the show -- which was not brief!!! Another star that deserves every accolade she ever got!!!

I saw Applause with Lauren Bacall at the Opera House Theatre in Chicago 71,72. The Musical was so good I ran out and bought the reel to reel tape. This musical I remember the best because Lauren Bacall's performance was outstanding.

... I got the OBC on 4-track reel-to-reel tape 'wayyy back then. RTR had amazing sound quality, with none of the snap, crackle & pop vinyl had, which I couldn't stand.
I now have the CD. The incandescent energy that The Boys gave this number spoke volumes to me back then ... and a whole lot more nowadays. In my mind I'm forever dancing along with them, and I'm *not* 67.
I actually met Lauren Bacall in NYC around the time she was doing the show. A strange twist of Fate landed me in her apartment, with a college buddy of mine. I'd of course gone into uber-polite diplomatic shock, but I heard myself open with "Miss Bacall, it's an overwhelming honor to meet you, I'll never, ever forget this, and how I ended up here is so crazy you'd believe it. Please do feel free to get rid of us immediately if we're not vaguely entertaining in some way". (I have a photographic memory, mind you. And *this* memory was burned deeply).
She looked me dead square in the eyes, threw her head back and howled. She loved it, and my college buddy (ahem) and I spent about 3 hours with her. She put me at ease enough to get back into my own mind, and her absolutely down-to-earth affect taught me so very much about my fascination with Theater. She was profoundly generous, wisely and effectively dealing with my at-first desperate need to get the Hell out of there, where I felt I absolutely didn't belong.
In retrospect, I can compare her to the great Zoe Caldwell, with whom I found myself in an elevator after I'd got free audience tickets to "The Tonight Show" (Vikki Carr was subbing for Johnny). This particular experience was a complete ambush, but as brief as it was, it was just as wonderful. Again, a brilliantly talented person of ineffable generosity, grace and style.

Thanks for making me feel OLD.... I was in a production of "Applause" in (gasp!) 1973. I was the goofy dancer sucking on his finger...the scene ended with me announcing that "...I really love HER!" and then a couple of the leather dudes carried me offstage while I was screaming "Margo! Margo!". Ah, the folly of youth...
And let's not forget that there is even a song in the production titled "Fasten Your Seat Belts"....

WOW! I could probably recite all of the dialog from "All About Eve" verbatim and indeed, having bought the soundtrack to this musical way back when can probably sing every song. That said, I'd never seen the T.V. performance of "Applause" nor the actual stage performance itself. I LOVE how cutting edge this is/was for its time. I just bought a copy of the T.V. version and can't wait to watch it.

That was awesome!! "But Alive" was the first song I loved on this album. When my old friend (and mentor in much of classic film and stage) showed me the LP and told me it was the musical version of "All About Eve" I thought he was putting me on. When I saw the LP in a used record store I jumped on it and very soon knew almost every song by heart. I'm SO looking forward to the day they release this on dvd!

the person who played Eve opposite her in that production is playing fraulein schneider at the moment in Cabaret at the lyric. One of the best I've ever seen, I'd say she's right up there with Sheila Hancock. Finally a schneider who's commanding and can belt. :P

Jeffrey Newman, thank you so much for this rarity. I hope I'm not being naive in saying that the broadcasting of this scene back then was daring, even more so than its source on Broadway. I can just imagine some bigoted TV viewers going into a big pillow-biting fit over that gay bar scene. This kind of thing was simply not seen on TV.

I saw Bacall do this on Broadway. A year later when she left to do the tour, she was replaced by Anne Baxter the original Eve Harrington. Although initially seen as a casting ploy, Baxter got wonderful reviews.
The third B'way replacement was Arlene Dahl-- not so good. I think Eleanor Parker did one of the tours.
