The "gold standard" is radiation treatment. This is poorly explained here - it is not like what most people think of as radio-therapy which uses beams of targetted radiation at fairly high doses, and often causing unpleasant side-effects.
For hyperthyroidism, they give ONE dose of radio-active iodine. Iodine has only one use in a cat (or human) body; in the thyroid gland. The body concentrates the radio-active iodine in the thyroid and nowhere else. It emits radioactive particles that penetrate only a few mm, these destroy part of the thyroid, and preferentially the abnormal tissues. Since iodine is a normal part of a cat's diet (and same for humans) there are virtually no side effects and the treatment has a 95%+ permanent cure rate. (this is also why they give out iodine tablets after a nuclear accident, to prevent escaped radio-iodine from being ingested and damaging people's normal thyroids, or even causing thyroid cancer later in life)
The only downsides are that only a few specialist centres offer it and it is therefore expensive. As the cat becomes radioactive for a short period it has to stay at the facility and only handled by specially trained staff. The radio-active iodine is mostly excreted, or decays harmlessly, over a period of a few weeks. It is a legal requirement that the cat stays at a facility until the radiation falls below a certain level - the period varies from country to country (in the US it can be as little as a few days, in the UK and most European countries, it is 14 days). When the cat returns home there are restrictions on handling, waste disposal etc for a further 14 days.
Drug treatments seem cheap, but have to continue forever, and you have to have regular checks as the thyroid level usually goes on increasing. It can also reach such high levels it cannot be controlled with drugs without risking overdose. The drugs can cause some unpleasant and rarely life-threatening side-effects.
Surgery is effective, but carries the risk of general anaesthetic, and it can damage two glands called the parathyroids that sit very near the thyroid. These control blood calcium levels, so if damaged, the cat may need treatment for this.
Diet can be effective, but again, requires lifelone regular tests, and it extremely difficult in a multi-cat household, or where the cat has access to the outdoors (and thus other food it may steal or catch!)

@@lilianponcealas2746 Howmuch is what? The cost of radio-iodine treatment? Well here in Britain it is around £2000 which includes most of the pre-treatment tests, the treatment itself and the 14 day stay in the animal hospital as here the law requires isolation in a specialised unit because of the radiation hazard . iirc it can be cheaper in the US as the stay can be considerably shorter but I culdn;t say really.

I agree! This is the treatment think would be the best as it's pretty much a "cure" whilst the others are to simply "manage" it. I was gutted my vet didn't even mention the injection as an option (it was too late by the time I researched it). My cat had a bad reaction to the tablets and went jaundice, it all went downhill from there : (
EVERY vet should at least offer/mention this as a treatment even if they're referring it to a specialist and it can't be done at the vet. It appears that many people don't know of this treatment option when their fur baby gets diagnosed with this condition.

Our oldest cat, Marvin, (Age Unknown, told he was 2 when adopted, vet says anywhere from 10+) has hyperthyroidism. He takes chewable pills every morning and night. He's a bigger cat, height and length wise, but has only ever peaked at 7.2 pounds. Its scary to see our cats health decline as fast as it did, but recently, i was playing with our two healthy cats and marvin (who usually has zero interest in playing) was starting to play!!! to me, that means his energy levels are increasing and that makes me so happy! i was a bit sad to see how when he tried to jump to catch a toy, he would lose his balance quick, or fall to his side, ive learned to go easy with how fast i fling his toy. you can tell he cant balance himself when hes moving fast, but the fact hes even playing at all gives me a lot of hope he will continue to gain weight.

That kitty looks just like a female I had that developed Hyperthyroid problems. We missed the symptoms until it was too late. By then she had developed an enlarged heart. Medications allowed us to enjoy for a few more months. Watching her pass in my arms was heart breaking. Regular vet checkups are so important especially as our beloved pets age far faster than we will admit.

+67RealityCheck I know this is an old comment but I'm sorry that happened. Our amazing vet caught it in our female cat before anyone at home noticed the symptoms, and I read that it is getting picked up on more and more, so hopefully that doesn't happen as much. I agree that everyone with a cat should get them checked up on as often as they can afford!

Please tell me the special diet I want to try that first! How do you know if it's affected their heart yet like the enlarged heart? My cat's first odd symptom he's had for a few years is cat acne. Since I moved over here I just thought a lot of it was the new place. He's always had a tendency to vomit regularly but it just seemed to get worse and he was a hyper kitten so I don't know much difference in that personality. But I have noticed when he laid on me his heart seemed irregular when he would sleep he would make crazy noises like a snoring but not snoring and I could hear is tummy rumbling really loud..

I didn't want to give him medicine that my aggravate the symptoms or have horrible side effects I hear it can cause vomiting and diarrhea and I've heard from a few people the medicine made them worse! I thought supplementing with diet and supplements and I've been giving him bone broth in the morning and I thought that was good to help with hydration also this morning right after the bone broth it was like his vomiting was coming back. When I took him in they did give him a treatment and an injection to help with that nausea.. I noticed he got really worked up last night though

Teoni Clarke we've done the same with our Alfie, at the Hyperthyroid Cat Centre in Wetherby. It worked for him, and he's doing really well. We'd been through hyperthyroidism with two cats before, we'd tried medication with Alfie, unsuccessfully, food was not an option as he was one of four cats in the home, and as we had good pet insurance cover and he was a good candidate, we opted to try the radioiodine treatment. It had much better success rates, with lower risks associated. I'm so glad we did it.

In the Uk it is about $2500, but can be a bit cheaper in the USA, mostly because Uk law requires a 14 day stay but US law allows for shorter periods (only because the cat becomes slightly radioactive and is subject to radiation controls though the risk to human health is actually tiny)

I think new to the market since this video was done so isnt mentioned as one of the options is transdermal ointment which we chose for our cats treatment which has just started this month, and we go back in 28 days for a checkup to see how the dose is going. Much easier than pilling, applied by massaging the dosed ointment into the inside of the cats ear every night using little finger condoms (?) so that the human isn’t being dosed also. It will have to be every day for the rest of her life, but thankfully our cat has always like ear rubs!

Sounds like it could be this. Their miowing is constant. Night time as well. My daughter had to put her cat of 16 in the kitchen at night. Eventually she settles down. Has drops in her food twice a day. Wanders all over. She sometimes gets to sleep but not as long or as much as before she had this. It is not easy dealing with a cat with this. Attacks the dog on a regular basis as well. Not herself at all.

@@Sarah-zr1nj I have a feral cat that I have been feeding for over a year. He has always been a small cat, probably the smallest cat I have ever seen. I haven't been around a lot of cats but Hector is small. Well I feed him everyday an he never gains weight, an lately he looks like he's losing weight but he eats a lot so I'm not sure what the problem is. I might change his food less fish canned food like from some videos suggest.

    • @Sarah-zr1nj
      @Sarah-zr1nj 4 роки тому

D C if you cannot personally care for Hector, your best bet in that case is to call your local ASPCA or Humane Society, or someone from a local animal shelter who deals with feral cat colonies and does TNR (trap, neuter, return). Let them know you are concerned, and they may be able to bring him to a vet who might diagnose the problem at no cost to you. (Emphasis on *might*, because everyone rightly wants to be paid for their services, but you never know; some people are charitable). Then, let them tell you what you should do. I’m not a vet so I can’t diagnose Hector, but if you are that concerned for his wellbeing, someone out there might be able to help you. Just explain the situation. Blood tests to determine hyperthyroidism are expensive, but some animal rescues out there might be willing to help. Just keep asking around.

    • @Sarah-zr1nj
      @Sarah-zr1nj 4 роки тому +1

D C and it does sound like a hyperthyroid cat who eats like a pig but gains no weight, but he could also be undernourished. Until and if you can get Hector diagnosed, try to feed him grain-free food if you can afford it (grain is useless to cats nutritionally). My cats eat freeze-dried raw food that is 98% meat, organs and bones, and are doing well on it, but it might be prohibitively expensive for you. I found that before I switched their diets, Blue Buffalo grain free was a very decent canned food, and Nulo was a very decent dry food, all which can be picked up at your local big box pet stores. Not ideal, but better than most commercial cat food.

I just want to add something here, and it's never been proven but it happened to my cat. My cat who was 20 years old was on thyroid medication for about 1 year before he passed away. Then I found out during a blood test later that he also had kidney disease as well. Moving forward 3/4's of a year and his appetite started to become an issue, he was not eating like he used to. The doctor prescribed a topical medicine to induce his appetite, and it worked, however my cat then suffered a stroke about 4 days after taking it. I was able to stabilize the cat but the doctor then prescribed a oral medicine that is shot into the cats mouth with a syringe. That also seemed to work, but then the cat looked as if it was going to dies a few hours later. It took my cat 3 days to come out of it. Then about a week later he suffered a 2nd stroke. I was again able to stabilize the cat, but decided not to give him anymore unless he had not eaten in a while and only 1/4 of the dose. I am mentioning this so that everyone is aware that these two medicines when introduced into my cat could of caused the stroke's. The doctor said that there was no data supporting this, but come on. My cat was healthy up to that point, yes he was diagnosed with kidney disease, but this is something he had been living with for a while. Just beware if you find yourself in this situation. My cat then got dementia from the 2 strokes and would not stop walking from that time until I had him euthanized. Those last 4 days I got 10 hours sleep due to trying to interrupt his walking so that he would not die of heart failure, ya I know, but this cat was everything to me and I could not just go to bed knowing that he was alone walking aimlessly.
Last thing, I had a home doctor come to the house to perform the euthanasia. I wish I would of asked if the 1st needle that is injected into the cat would hurt him. It made my cat very uncomfortable and he almost jumped away from me holding him. It took 4-5 seconds of agony for him to finally slump into sleep. Then the final needle was given and there was no reaction. I blame myself for not asking the one important question, it killed me a little to watch him suffer needlessly.

I looked into I-131 shot for my liddle girl...I would have paid 1500 even tho it would be hard.
But my cat has heart stuff too which means cardiologist on top of it, and the stay would be longer for her bc of such a high level.
I don't know if she could handle the stay, emotionally she is very attached to her home.
Besides, with cardiologist the cost would likely go up at least another 1000.
Also they said she might require another shot...again, due to high T4 level.

Of course feeding an appropriate diet is always number one - meaning no burned pellets, a but meat based diet. Exercise, playing with your cat is important too, too many cats are bored out of their minds, and instead sleep all day. Improve diet and life style.

So, I'm nowhere near an expert and I can only share my own limited experince. I just want to share my personal experince When I was younger I adopted a cat from my grandma, who has had alzheimer's diesease (or dimentia) for years but it had gotten a lot worse. By this point, we all knew that she most likely was not going to recover. The cat had been unwatched and visted twice a day (to be fed) for months. She was 5 lb when we adopted her, with a thyroid function way above normal. Me (and my parents) discussed all the options with a veternarian before deciding to go with radiation treatment. We fed her like mad until we could get this treatment for her, hoping she would gain some weight. As soon as we could, we took her to a specialty vet service almost an hour away to get the treatment done. They had to keep Lucy for 14 days before we could have her back and after these 14 days we reclaimed our cat. It took her a couple of months to start gaining weight, but she is still living happily and healthy today. Her favorite hobbies are to sleep behind my pillow, purring loudly in my ear and to sleep on my bed.
Please do not take this as any advice except for consult your local vet!

    • @bobbiwib
      @bobbiwib 8 років тому +5

+Adama Tova No idea regarding this particular cat but hyperthyroids can often live for many many years after diagnosis. I have a cat who takes two doses of methimazole (the drug licensed for vet use in the UK - there is also something called carbimazole in the US) daily and her glands aren't likely to end her life at all, it's the knock-on effect on the kidneys (in her case) or heart that often cause problems. The animal shelter I help out at doesn't bother with methimazole, they remove one of the thyroid glands. This is because methimazole causes a lot of cats to vomit and for underweight cats this is obviously not ideal. However, removal of the thyroid gland/s can cause problems with calcium and phosphorus uptake (probably other things too - I've never encountered a double thyroidectomy although they are done in certain circumstances)
In some cases, where hyperthyroidism has been making up for poor kidney function, vets will deliberately give them a dose of medicine that won't fully treat the disease, so as to keep the kidneys as intact as possible.
As far as I'm aware, none of this applies to cats who have a carcinoma (cancerous tumour) on their thyroid gland rather than a benign tumour, but they are very rare.
      Hope this helps :)

My cat is 14 and he has just been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. We felt like something was up when he was eating NON STOP and was skinny as a rake. By the time we noticed they said he has liver disease. I’m not sure how long he has or where to go from here. We are devastated $60 a month for meds and $300 every 3mths for blood tests. Is it worth it? Is he fixable? Im so worried about my boy :(

There is a permanent cure which is radioiodine treatment. The cat will have to be hospitalised for around 14 days and it is very expensive. But he will be permanently cured. Or you could do surgery which could also cure him but with surgery there's a slight risk hyperthyroidism may came back later on

@@billbob9304 Same costs here. 😧 I switched vets but now they are more expensive too. I love my fifteen-year-old cat so much but the costs are just unsustainable unless I stop paying something else. I thought that after a few tests it would stabilize and I could just get the prescriptions. I've done four blood draws at these prices in 9 months. She is due for another one I just don't know what to do. I know some humans order their own meds from Mexican pharmacies Etc. Am I Wrong to think something is better than nothing? Or should I go with nothing and love her as long as I can? Every time I think it's the last big Bill but it's always a big bill. Had I known I would spend so much such a short time I would have done the radio active surgery. Now I am Tapped Out. 😢

@@paul2019monte Go with the Restricted iodine diet. No meds needed. Hill's® Prescription Diet® y/d Thyroid Care Cat Food. It's pricier than store brand dry, but was the solution for me. Just make sure the cat does not get ANYTHING else to eat, since most everything contains salt, which contains iodine, which drives the cats thyroid wildly high. The 8.5lb bag lasts me about 6 weeks.

@@billbob9304 Hey thanks so much for that answer! I did just stop by my new vet and spoke to a tech. She advised me that they will go as long as a year without another blood test. (The first vet was every 3 mos yikes) That will make a huge difference in cost. I had asked her about prescription diet and she said that they would help me with that so your answer and experience is very timely. The meds are still going to be costly through them but if I find cheaper online they will send the RX no problem. I feel so much better having talked to them in person follow up. They are a low-cost vet but they are really wonderful for anyone in Denver Aurora area. They understand that things are expensive and want to help. I will ask for that food you suggest and use it as you say. 🤗👍

A VERY restricted diet, such as Hill's Prescription Diet y/d Thyroid Care Dry Cat Food. And MOST importantly, do not let her eat anything else because it will most likely contain traces of iodine, which will negate the new diet she is on.

It may be that the GLUTEN in commercial wet & dry cat food/treats is causing a form of autoimmune thyroid issue. In humans, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (autoimmune, usually due to gluten in the diet) is the most common form of thyroid problem, which can cause/swing from Hypothyroidism to Hyperthyroidism. Why wouldn’t the same thing be happening to cats? There is gluten in most commercial cat food. It happens mostly in elderly cats (who have been eating gluten in their diet their whole life). It may be as simple as feeding them plain meats (chicken, beef, turkey). Of course, ROTISSERIE chicken from a store has been injected with gluten-containing seasonings/solutions...
Another option is to administer Buglewort non-alcohol tincture, which slows a thyroid down. This is sold for humans, but can be used for cats/dogs. Research the proper DOSAGE for a cat first. It can be mixed with food. I found some on Amazon.

I lost my cat this past November to hyperthyroidism, he was 14, 2 years with the disease. We started him on the pill which worked for about a year, the vet constantly needs to check their blood so it gets really expensive, he ended up getting really bad towards the end it was so sad i dont think ill ever get over it, my dad was giving him eggs and chicken alot in his final months which seemed to help, but the reality of it is that theres a tumor on their thyroid and food alone cant fix that.

You dont want to feed much organ meat just once in awhile (liver, hearts are organ meats) be sure and add dry e vitamin and taurine both available online...just dont put too much or they wont eat it.
I was using a b vitamin too but it smelled real strong.
I tried but cats wouldnt eat it.

Nearly all my family have this and many other autoimmune diseases. Hypothyroidism(underactive) is the opposite of hyperthyroidism (overactive).
There are lots of symptoms as it affects so many systems in the body. Not everyone will get them all though. Thank goodness its, mostly, easily treated once the correct daily dose of Levothyroxine is found. That can take a while though as they start you off on a low dose and gradually raise it until the balance is right and you are not totally exhausted 24/7 & feeling more human! 😩😴😊

There are a few ideas for hypothyroidism treatments
    Try to rest your feet
    Consider Wearing supportive footwear
    Try ice on your heel
Take ibuprofen or another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to reduce pain and inflammation
    try night splints
    Do stretching and strengthening exercises.

THIS IS BULL crap!! YOUR CAT WILL DIE!!! My cat was diagnosed 3 mos before he died. H T gave him heart failure. He was diagnosed when he was 13.5!! I guess if they are diagnosed very young maybe then can be treated or cured successfully but
NOT if they are already very thin and in the late stages and old!! From 1 mos till his death it was like he had a bad case of CANCER!! He still looked fairly good , and like nothing was wrong with him, and healthy at 9 mos ago , 6 mos ago. I would say at 5 mos in a row that is when i started to notice he kept losing weight. I fed him like a pig till the end and he never stopped eating. HE died of congestive heart failure in my house. R I P little guy.

Rubbish! Hyperthyroid will NOT kill your cat unless it goes untreated OR it is caused by a cancerous tumour in the thyroid but this is rare. Cats with hyperthyroid often develop nodules and growths in their thyroids but they are mostly benign i.e. not cancer and malignant. Hyperthyroid disease can be controlled very well (but not cured, that is, it needs lifelong medication) with drugs, or it can be completely cured with either surgery or radio-iodine treatment (but that is expensive).
Hyperthyroid is only fatal if it is left undiagnosed or untreated for a long time (or it is caused by thyroid cancer). In that case the excessive thyroid levels cause the organs to overwork and eventually fail - the heart, kidneys and liver typically. Hyperthyroid can cause heart failure because it makes the heart beat very fast and hard, this can eventually cause enlargement of the heart and heart failure. So long as HT is diagnosed and treated early, ths can be COMPLETELY prevented , this is why annual healthchecks are essential.
My own cat was diagnosed with HT, I had no idea anything was wrong, he was a healthy weight and active, but the vet noticed in a routine check he had a very high heart rate and had lost a little weight for no obvious reason.
Your cat may have been HT for a long time and it had already caused irreversible damage but even heart trouble caused by HT will often reverse if the HT is controlled, so your cat may have simply had coincidental heart disease. Heart failure is relatively common in cats, the HT may have aggravated it.
