Published by U.S Gold in North America and Europe 1992, Flashback appeared on many different systems, and therefore had many different developers. Tiertex are responsible for the Super Nintendo (SNES), PC, 3DO, and Philips CDi versions. Chui for the Dreamcast version years later. Delphin Software International is responsible for the Mega Drive/Genesis and MEGA-CD versions. In total, Flashback would see a commercial release of around EIGHTEEN versions, including the Amiga, MS-DOS, FM-Towns Marty, and Atari Jaguar.

Flashback: The Quest for Identity - as it's known in North America - is a cinematic platformer style game. As evident by the game's intro, a big selling point is in presentation. Originally advertised as a "CD-ROM game on a cartridge", Flashback features fully hand-drawn backdrops, including all the animated cutscenes unique to the Mega Drive version. Other CD-based include full FMV sequences, although the overall gameplay is virtually identical.
So how does Flashback play? Anyone who has played Prince of Persia, will feel right at home here. Many elements such as jumping, running and climbing all feature here, all while navigating around maze-like areas. The big difference, would be in it's inventory: a gun is used as your main weapon to gun down any enemies, before they gun down you. Your gun will need replenishing with ammo drops, as well as other items such as stones to trigger faraway switches, or distract enemies in dangerous areas to progress through each level.
Flashback: The Quest for Identity would go on to be a hit across it's many platforms. It would even be listed by the Book of World Records as the 'Best-Selling French videogame of all Time'. Remasters of Flashback are still been made in the 21st century, with modern hardware such as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 getting official releases.
