How to foil on laser printed images.

- This short clip shows how you can add foil to any artwork printed on your laser printer using our specially adapted laminating machine. The image must be created using a laser printer or photocopier. Place foil over the artwork, cover with a thin piece of card and feed through the machine. Peel back the foil and the printed image is covered. It gives a wonderful professional finish to your hand made cards, wedding invitations, business cards, certificates etc.

Yes you can put the paper/card back through the printer and it will print on top of the foil. I was aksed this question while I was demonstrating at a show and tried it with my name, foiled it and then printed my name again, slightly offset. It is really just a case of experimenting with your ideas and seeing what works. It is the best way to learn and you can't really do any harm.

Yes Chris is correct. If you print a picture or a backing paper on your inkjet printer, then print a greeting or an image with the laser printer, the foil will only stick to the laser print and not the inkjet picture.

This is not the same as hot stamping foil. The foil used is called toner foil and works with the printed image or text from a laser printer. The laser toner melts when put through the foiling machine and this acts as the "glue" if you like.

Sorry ink wont work. It has to be a Laser printer as the toner acts as the adhsive.

Yes I did have a go with just a household iron... Didn't do the the job, I also put it through my laminator with great expectations but again failure. I think it's heat settings... Maybe play around with different temps might be the answer. So hope that helps
It definitely takes a few tries with an iron to get the hang of it. I use a cool to medium heat setting and keep the iron moving slowly. I think it probably takes me about 15 minutes each design! It takes a lot of patience but you can see when the design is sticking - it's smoother than the rest of the foil. Peel a little bit of foil up to see how it's looking and then smooth down and carry on ironing if it hasn't quite stuck all over. Hope this helps :) (I now want to foil EVERYTHING!)

Hello Anne, not sure if you have foiund the answer to your question, sorry not to have replied sooner. Unfortunately the foil used with the blockmaster is not suitable for this method. The colour will stick to the card rather than just the print. Toner foil is available from my website which is at the end of the clip.
Could you use just an ordinary household iron, if it's the toner that is acting like to glue,surly the heat source from a hot iron would be ok. Just as long you use a laser printer. Iv got one of these document printers.... Might give it ago

The paper does not have to be ultra smooth and you can use different kinds of paper and card even some textured cards but it could mean trying different types
This machine look fantastic I love the way it does the foiling on the wedding invitations. Can you please give me some advise I have a Utax Colior Laserr Printer It uses toner but I also have a Photo copier that copies in black and white only which of these would be best to use this system with. Where can I buy this foil is it a special type of foil I used to have a blokcmaster foiling machine before so i have that foil is it different from yours I have a large laminator would this do or not

Most papers which will go through your laser printer should be suitable for foiling. If you would like us to test a particular paper you could send us some printed samples to try. An iron is unlikely to give a good result.
I have to ask, was that the temperture you adjusted at the beginning of this video?
If the temp is around 160~165 to foil might one be able to use a house hold iron instead of purchasing the machine to apply pressure and heat? Might be worth investigation if you haven't tried already. Looks like you would need a surface that is nearly hard and flat for the iron to work well.
An Iron might be a good idea. I've used on to do the clear coating on Paper products.

Sorry I don't understand but I am guessing you are asking about sales to Brazil - if so the answer is no - we do not ship to Brazil and the machine probably works on a different voltage anyway.

This is using special Toner Foil which sticks to the printed image from a laser printer. Not sure what you have available in the "dollar" store but it is unlikely to be the right kind of foil.

this is great! i would like to ask you about temperature and what you are using to feed the card through? is it just sandwiched between two regular pieces of paper? i have a purplecows heat laminator and the temperature of it gets up to 257 degrees max. it looked as though you were setting yours at 162. is that correct?

It does work best on smooth paper and card but it can also work on other textures if you no how to do it
The foil only sticks to the toner.
So if you use a ink jet printer then pass it through a laser printer the foil will stick to the toner ad not to the ink
If not you could always use a inkjet prior to foiling and only the toner would be covered :).

What a question!! The idea of this machine is to put foil onto handmade cards and wedding invitations. Having spent time and materials making the card why would I want to crumple it up?
It must be toner foil for use with this machine. The images must be printed on a laser printer and the foil sticks to the toner.

I have a similar laminator and doing the same process on a card, however I'm getting spotting from the gold foil all over the card, looks messy, what am I doing wrong? tried various heat, still no good.

I feel it would be too much. It is recomended that the maximum used is 300 gsm.

Are you covering the foil with a piece of copy paper? This needs to be at least a 90 gsm paper. Any less, say a cheap 80 gsm copy paper, will crease and then send the crease through to the foil.

Hi Lisa you can use all sorts of card and paper but because there is lots of diffrent card and paper some will not work.

The laminator would need to reach temperatures between 150c - 180c to foil. A normal laminator would be approx 120c. It does not have to be done straight away.
So if id print an image with an injet printer, and then id print some text on top of it using a laser printer, id be able to foil the text without spoiling the image printed with the inkjet printer ?
Yes thats right the foil will not stick to the ink only the laser print.

The foil will stick to mono or colour, however it will depend on the print quality. It would obviously be cheaper to use mono as mono cartridges are usually cheaper than colour to replace.

Although I have never used ribbon througj this machine, I suspect you are using the wrong type of foil. It has to toner foil which will stick only to the print. Other foils have glue on the back and this would be released with the heat and stick to places other than the print.
What if i want to have a partially foiled? Do i have to cut into the specific shape i want?
Unfortunately if you print with a laser printer, but only want a small section foiled, the whole of the printed image will melt and spoil. The only way to do it is to print what you want to foil, foil it and then print again.

No it will only work with a laser printer. It is the toner that acts as the adhesive. it will not work with an inkjet printer.

I bought the foil but it stick into the whole document not only the image that I,m using. I did it first with a deco foil and it did worked perfect but not with this foil. What I'm doing wrong???

+Andrej Maric Yes I found the solution you bought the wrong one like I did. The one you have needs a special machine (a hot foil stamping machine). Check online for the stamping machime maybe you can get one of those after but they are expensive. I got some foil from kycutters on ebay and they are great, they worked perfect and last really long. Remember you need to use a laser printer because when you use the laminator the heat melt the laser ink and it works as glue that way the foil sticks to the image. Hope this help. God bless you.

Yip wrong foil being used...hot stamping foil has an adhesive coating on the back that will stick to paper under heat and pressure..Toner foil has an adhesive kayer designed to stick to plastic Toner powder is partly made of plastic (55% polystyrene )so Toner foils only stick to plastic this is why the do not adhere to the paper around a Toner printed image...courtesy DR G the foil printing specialist (youtube)

The foil will stick to whatever you print. If you want only part of the print foiled you will have to print in two stages. Print and foil then print the rest.

Yes of course if you print with an inkjet printer then print something over this using a laser printer then the foil will only stick to the laser print.

Yes you could but I would recommend you use a ink jet printer on the card.
Then because the foil wont stick to ink run the card though a laser printer, the foil will not stick to the ink just the toner.

I have a logo that needs to be multi colored. Can I print each section one at a time and then foil them one at a time? Or will the foil stick to the other colors if I overlap them?
Obviously it depends on how many colours you are talking about but in theory yes, it is possible to print on top of foil and foil the second print without any of the second colour foil sticking to the first. However, each time you print and foil it will change the appearance of the first foil slightly - as in deminish the shine.

This system needs the paper or card to go through a laser printer. It will not work on leather.
Sorry not to have replied to this message sooner but unfortunately we have not been getting notifications of messages. The fact that the foil is sticking onto the card rather than just the text indicates it is the wrong type of foil.
I outsource my printing. Does this only work on items immediately printed with an inkjet printer?
This does not work with an inkjet printer, it only works with a laser printer and there is no need to foil immediately it is printed.

A normal laminator is not suitable for foiling. It will not get to the correct temperature. Our Foil It machine has been specially manufactured to reach the higher temperature setting. For laminating it is set at 120c for foiling it needs to be between 150c - 170c depending in the thickness of your card. If your laminatore has only one heat setting it will not work.

TheMartinCMYK There is a particular type of foil used for this - it has an adhesive in it that bonds to the styrene (plastic) in the toner. If you have the correct foil and the correct laminator it is the laser printer - Brother Laser printers don't use styrene in their toner. Try a different laser printer.

No. The foil required for this process is toner foil which a thin film with the colour on the reverse. This colour is transferred to the laser print when it is fed through the machine and heated.
