The role of SMMEs in growing the cannabis and hemp industry in South Africa

The National Cannabis Master Plan highlights that the cannabis sector has huge potential for the development of SMMEs, attracting domestic and foreign investment and value addition in the processing and manufacturing of various products for local and export markets. It highlights that it would lead to the diversification of the economy and, thus, increase economic growth, create jobs and alleviate poverty.
To unlock this potential, several issues, including regulations, good seed germplasm, processing and product development, and education initiatives, among others, need to be addressed. The CSIR, working with the Department of Science and Innovation, Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Small Business Development, has issued an expression of interest to start pilot projects with SMMEs at provincial and national levels to develop or improve their products/processes, so that they can compete and sell in local and international markets. The projects will focus on the food, cosmetics, nutraceutical and African traditional medicines sectors.
