Headphone jacks are extremely useful and more companies should bring them back, honestly, they are kinda a deal breaker for me. Maybe if big companies are hell-bent on getting rid of them that's fine for thier "hollier than thou" flagships but It would be nice if they consider it for their midrange models or idk thier highest/lowest range of their flagships since one is all about being extra and the other is "congratulations you're barely not a peasant or this fits your needs just fine, you recognize that, and that's acceptable." (appologies I'm feeling a bit saucy today). You were very harsh on the Zenfone despite its offering a rarely compact design with more features than the Galaxy like a headphone jack, a bigger battery and a 6 axis stabilization. Yes the s23 is the more refined phone but we have to give credit to those companies that are keeping the compact phones' segment alive.
She definitely pointed out every flaw on the Zenfone 10. Even when she said it was it was a better gaming phone...she said the screen could be too small. Bias review.
In regards to display width. I found that older, smaller, 5'2 inch phones have a pretty similar screen width as newer devices. Which means that anyone can still feel right at home with smaller devices.
agreed, but what you're missing is that the travel distance from screen itself is what makes deal breakers. A 13 mini is good for me, but battery sucks. If they could make an andriod with 3-4k battery capacity that would be ideal. Camera I can sacrifice for it. Think about it, why do people have those pop sockets behind their phones? Because without it, the travel distant on these "compact" phones would tire out your hand throughout the day. Is there anything similar to a samsung galaxy s7 dimensions but made in past 3 years?
What a review, thank you for the detailed analysis! Although we could hope that many of the camera issues, especially the over-sharpening, could be fixed via software updates, I won't hold my breath. Looks like I'm going to be getting an S23!
IMO, S23 also suffers with extreme overshapening. Even the RAW files are not really raw. They are processed in the background before being produced. So, Samsung may be better than Asus, but it is not better overall.
As a small smartphone enjoyer it triggers me when people say that smaller screen can make a phone less desirable. No! It's preference. You either prefer a big one or small one. There's no general rule bigger = better. It doesn't work this way. I hear this a lot from my fiends and collegues that smartphones are too big and they'd actually prefer a smaller one. Can we please stop discriminate compact smartphones by saying that they are worse because the are smaller? I see a smaller screen as a pro not as a con and I'm not the only one.
sure there is a general rule.....bigger is better if you are a slave to your phone or if you watch alot of video or do alot of reading......other then those things a smaller phone is better
She meant that the smaller screen of the Zenfone is less desirable since the body of the phone is still as large as the S23, due to the thicker bezels.
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd S23 is a bit wider. But even if the body was exactly the same size, bigger screen is more difficult to navigate with one hand so bigger is still worse for me 🤷♂

It's really great that you specifically mentioned that you like your skin tone more in the S23 photos. Since the color dynamic are very flat on phone cameras compared to the one you used for shooting this video, I wouldn't tell which phone camera is more true to life. Very good review with so many details about in-hand usage, design and hw stats. I think you could have more technical numbers, hardware stats etc. in a small subtle text somewhere on the screen, in your own style.
Very well details. I was searching for a small phone that is not heavy to hold for this year. I like that you explain it in a timely manner and not in a rush. I also like your accent not forcing yourself to be American or Asian but just natural. I notice that you also highlighted very important features such as moving capture which no other UA-camr does. Keep it up, Ella!
I can't be the only one who thought the Asus main camera pictures had a lot more detail in the background. The Samsung's were very mushy and oil painting-like
My only problem with the zenfone is thrid party support for accessories. I really like the form factor of both phones but with samsung there is so much more third support for accessories which really helps me with keeping a phone long term
I agree with the other guy who commented, for the zenfone was surprised how easily was i able to find thousands of protectors for the phone, screen and even cameras in my country which usually doesnt cover stuff much

Was not expecting the size to be similar. The ZF body looks to be a hair taller, though with a smaller display due to the thicker bezels on the top and bottom.
5:20 certainly, the vivo v3 max had this feature back then. My mom had this phone and its features were far more superior compared to other models during that period and also it worked seamlessly. It was the best phone we had so far. In fact, it works fine even now.
This is such an excellent video. I was mainly interested in the Zenfone, and you showed so many features and things that some other reviewers just totally gloss over, like the gestures and 144hz trick
Thank you for actually making this comparison. A couple of the other videos that I watched about this phone susipiciously didn't include any comparison with the normal S23, which is very weird as they are the same size. Did Asus try and stop you from making this comparison?
the one handed mode on the zenfone clearly isn't designed for you to use it all the time. i think it's very well designed because it doesn't change the scale or make anything smaller, it just brings the stuff at the top closer to you so you can hit it easily then put it back where it belongs after you've tapped it
True and I find it actually great and better than the Samsung as someone who has small hands and short fingers, chances are a screen that's a bit smaller than the origional won't make much of a difference compared to pulling things half way down.
I prefer Zenfone 10 over S23 due to its larger 4300Mah battery, the 3.5mm headphone jack and the cameras array looks bolder. However Zenfone 9 or even 10 does not make it officially here in Malaysia and the biggest drawback is its software update is just too short compared to S23.
Maybe it's just me, but I actually miss larger bezels on phones. I hate to be accidentally pressing what I don't want, plus it helps to hold the phone better
I would say : s23 for photos(if you get one not affected by the banana gate), display, updates; Zenfone 10 for size( more narrow 2,8mm), battery, headphone jack, 2 sim slot(but no esim)
Thank you for this video. I'd watched the Zenfone 10 launch video and needed a decision between the S23 and it, and now it's clear to me I have to go with the Samsung---kind of unfortunate.
Samsung phones are good but run out of storage fast because of the Samsung 34 default apps that always have updates & that burns through storage quick & you Can't even disable some apps Zenfone very stock android you can disable apps & not many pre installed apps so yea
I am truly troubled. I am attracted to the Zenphone because I can get the 512gb version for around the same price of the s23 that only carries 256gb (and of those, I only get 200gb). If micro-sd cards were still a thing I wouldn't be so troubled but I'm the only idiot that still remembers them. But the s23 cameras... they're just better, I don't know if I actually care for One Ui anymore as most of the features I use on it are already in the Zenphone (long screenshot, pop-up windows, etc). If anyone could do a review on the cameras because there is this timer and palm feature where you can take a picture on the Samsung as I use that a lot haha. I don't know. I will keep reading the comments to see if I can finally make a decision.
Thanks for the video comparison. I just confirmed trading in my S22U for the compact S23. Yea, back to smaller phones. I enjoy listening to your voice, clear and crispy.. well done
Thank you so much, your video helped me decide for the s23. I really like the zenfone but no one else mentioned the vibration when listening to music, that’s one thing no one told me about the Xperia 5 iii and when I bought it I hate it.
I mentioned long time ago in a survey to focus on user experiences over stats and thanks a lot for doing that. Your reviews are already great anyway and I watch every single review about new phones on your channel. Big ups!
Damn, Ella gave a pretty negative review. A lot of nice features had a 'but' attached. For what its worth the Zenfone 9 has been my favorite phone of the last decade and the 10 is a nice spec bump. I came from the S21+.
That's because the Samsung is pretty similar but better in almost every way. The only thing I don't like about the Samsung is the UI and the aluminium sides which feels horrible in comparison to any other phone. In conclusion, the Zenfone is solid but Samsung has it beat.
Great comparison! I'm quite tempted by the bigger battery im the Zenfone, but here in Norway the Zenfone is 180$ more than the S23 right now, making it an even tougher buy😅
I think you should go for a S23. Right now, if you don't need a headphone jack Samsung seems to be a more reasonable buy. Even for the same price. I had a pretty bad opinion on Samsung phones, but the reviews on the S23 and few friend recommendations led me to getting S23. Don't regret it. It's a great phone
In my country asus is not official release zenfone anymore the only phone they sell is rog phone. So the only way to buy zenfone 10 is buy it from seller make it even more expensive and dont have any warranty 😅
I'm in disbelief that Ella points out crucial details of a phone which are not covered by even some of the biggest tech reviewers! You're doing a wonderful job.
Are you using a screen protector on your S23? I feel like it's so difficult to scan my fingerprint with a screen protector on. No matter what screen protector I use.
@@nobigdeal4me Thanks for the suggestion, I tried that previously and still can't. I may have very faint fingerprints? Especially after washing hands I just can't get it to work.
I have both the S22 and Zf9. The fingerprint reader on the Zf is MILES better than the S22 because it NEVER misses. I never need to double tap, not even when my finger is wet. On the S22, I often need to press 3 or more times to get it, and if my finger is wet, I have no hope. The S22 has particularly bad heat management, so the Zf9 beats it easily there as well. The S23 vs. Zf10 heat management gap might be better though.
My first smartfone was an Alcatel ASUS fone . I loved that fone because I thought the interface was great and it had a headphone jack . It was a great value purchase because it was really cheap . I'm planning on getting one with a different carrier .
The main reason why i didn't consider s23 for purchase was lack of dc dimming. For people who cares about their eyesight , thats very important feature. Even Chinese brands have it, asus have it too
I had a flip phone with a tiny screen over a decade ago, but I still call a 5.9 inch screen small. I have 2 phones with screens at 6.8 inches, but I'd still like larger
IMHO if DEX desktop mode is available for the S23 it will probably put the choice over the top for me vs a Zenfone 10, especially if I had to carry secondary “always connected” work device, since I wouldn’t always need to fire up my laptop for “more than just a quick” email response just plug the S23 onto KVM connected USB C dock. Or for reviewing a PDF, doc or spreadsheet on a bigger screen.
Wow, I think this is the best review I have seen for zenphone 10. You really show us the pros and cons on things that matters. Samsung device goes on sale often. I would definitely pick s23. Better camera and software.
Good review, Zenfone 10 should be compared with Samsung s23 or Pixel 7 or similar size phones and not with larger phones. I saw many videos comparing Zenfone 10 with S23 Ultra and Iphone 14 pro max etc.
7:54 currently i'm using a one plus which has a 6.4" display & when i play CODM in it, it is sometimes hard for me to spot enemies. so 5.9" display is definitely a no for me.
I think for 799$ or less, the S23 is the best of compact phones this year periode... Even with a slightly larger screen and a smaller battery, the S23 just loses 4% of battery compared to the ZenFone 10 after 3 Hours on UA-cam. They have almost the same autonomy. Other than that, the S23 has Dex mode, better cameras, a better operating system, 4 years of Android updates, 5 years of security updates... The S23 wins effortlessly.

For me, the Fact that the Zenfone is only 2 years supported is more than enough to turn me off. It looks really great and the small form factor is a thing I really enjoy, like with the iPhone 13 mini but with android, but no matter how many good specs they squeeze into that thing as long as they won't support it longer, I won't buy that thing

I respect your opinion miss Ella, but many things you said are simply not true or you have not explored both phones enough to notice, which generally are in the favor of the Samsung. I am an ex S22 Ultra user, then switched to S23, and after seeing that all the flaws from the S22 Ultra are still there, I finally switched to the Asus Zenfone 10 and as a heavy phone user (docs, banking, finance, emails, little to no entertainment such as games, yt an so on) I can clearly tell you the Asus is far superior to this grand scheme Samsung S phones has started. Simply put, Samsung is a mainstream phone, a very boring one, or as Marques Brownlee calls them, the Best Boring phone. Also battery and signal strength is absolute crap (pardon the language) on all Samsung phones. I just don't understand how people live with all the mishaps, probably not explored other options enough. If it matters, the best phone I ever had was the Huawei P30 Pro, such a pleasant and flawless experience, but no Google Services is a big no-no for me. If anyone reading this comment wants to buy one between the two and is undecided, just ask yourself what you want from a phone. Mainstream stuff (Facebook, Insta, games, TikTok etc) go for Samsung. Reliable battery and signal strength, actual useful customization options and somewhat better performance overall (in my experience) go for Asus. Peace! ✌️

Exelent review, I think the plastic material makes the phone a little bit more affordable, other than that in my opinion I don’t really care too much about the phone cosmetics and or camera lenses as long as the zoom gets better which means bigger camera lenses, right? I do like the smaller phones over bigger phones, the smaller the better, but the bigger the better too, as long as I can hold them comfortably in the palm of my hand! 👌😺🥰📱✨💎

@@oscarkarlsson8220 @oscarkarlsson8220 you missed all of my points. Custom Roms do not play well with banking apps, not old OS. This is in case someone decides to go for a custom Rom because they might still want new features. You said not more than 8 years, which seems like a random number anyway, but also does not have anything to do with the conversation. Furthermore, saying security updates is for gullible people is like saying facebook is for security minded people. It's the complete opposite. Having your phone secure is one of the most important things, because almost all of your personal life (banking, photos, apps, passwords, contacts) is on it. How on earth is a security update for gullible people?
@@silverwolfgecko7064 I wouldn't trust Custom Roms. Especially with banking and online purchases.
Headphone jacks are extremely useful and more companies should bring them back, honestly, they are kinda a deal breaker for me. Yes, I could get a dongle, but why should I have to if I'm already paying a ton of money anyway? Maybe if big companies are hell-bent on getting rid of them that's fine for thier "hollier than thou" flagships but It would be nice if they consider it for their midrange models or idk thier highest/lowest range of their flagships since one is all about being extra and the other is "congratulations you're barely not a peasant or this fits your needs just fine, you recognize that, and that's acceptable." (appologies I'm feeling a bit saucy today).
It's just with the headphone jack there are less things to charge, I personally prefer wired headphones, they are easier to keep track of and hey they won't die on you unless they break or malfunction.
totally agree. its just to sell us their bluetooth headphones which are worse in every single way :( theyre much more expensive yet they break, theyre easy to lose, they have connection issues, and they are often uncomfortable bc of the weight. still hanging on to my pixel 4a for now :P
for us gym goers and with active lifestyle, bluetooth is the way. but yea audio jack is important as well for me when it comes to work or if ever my earbuds are on low battery, I could just switch up.@@nL841wK68l
I just ordered a pair of wired headphones. Nothing is more annoying than trying to watch a show or when on a call and you get the incessant "low battery" alert on wireless earbuds. It should say it a few times and stop.
Exactly! It seems rather offensive that Samsung discontinued the headphone jack😅😅
@@amorgladiador8856more annoying is not being able to listen your phone without having it on your pocket, that's when Bluetooth buds shine. Also I don't miss entangled cables on my neck
It's not rarely compact. It's in the same size category as the S23 and regular iPhone 13/14.
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd
Ok but you named 3 other phones, 2 of which are feature phones not smart ones and you don't call that rarity!
@@samfisher3336 What nonsense are you talking? Those are all smart phones.
Glad it was helpful!
But even if the body was exactly the same size, bigger screen is more difficult to navigate with one hand so bigger is still worse for me 🤷♂
@@Ukiya44 At this size class it hardly matters. Just get an iPhone 13 Mini if you want an actual one-handable small phone.
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd See this is the problem. This is what I'm talking about. This is why I'm always so mad when someon says bigger is better. Because of that stupid thinking bigger = better we're stuck with only one option for a really small smartphone. A brand I really don't like. And now, even that brand abandoned small smarphones.
Yep, this was the comparison I wanted to see. Thank you Ella!
Love how honest and in-depth your reviews are!
I think you could have more technical numbers, hardware stats etc. in a small subtle text somewhere on the screen, in your own style.
maybe that's what she meant that s23 looks more true to life while zenfone making the colors more pop and contrasty
honestly i love the power button doubling as the menu pull down. and the other shortcuts with the buttons
The Samsung's were very mushy and oil painting-like
@11:30 is a boldy incorrect assessment.
Zenfone 50mp mode is accessible in the 'Camera resolution' menu item within the app settings.
My only problem with the zenfone is thrid party support for accessories. I really like the form factor of both phones but with samsung there is so much more third support for accessories which really helps me with keeping a phone long term
I agree with the other guy who commented, for the zenfone was surprised how easily was i able to find thousands of protectors for the phone, screen and even cameras in my country which usually doesnt cover stuff much
@@cmmartti more than just "a case" but rather a variety of cases at many different price points. Your welcome to spend your money how ever you want as am I. @@ozzie1684well, what accessories are you talking about? You never said what accessories the s23 works better with, is your preferred case only on the s23?
It's android, anything android works with every android.
I really like the double click feature for taking instant pictures on the Asus, hopefully Samsung inplements it on my S23
Did Asus try and stop you from making this comparison?
not at all
love your videos, really well produced and clear comparisons. don't know why you don't have a bigger audience.
aw tysm!
the one handed mode on the zenfone clearly isn't designed for you to use it all the time. i think it's very well designed because it doesn't change the scale or make anything smaller, it just brings the stuff at the top closer to you so you can hit it easily then put it back where it belongs after you've tapped it
True and I find it actually great and better than the Samsung as someone who has small hands and short fingers, chances are a screen that's a bit smaller than the origional won't make much of a difference compared to pulling things half way down.
Right! They have different purpose. Zenfone way seems more practical as well than miniaturizing the whole screen.
Been seeing your reviews and comparisons lately, Fantastic comparison, even better than most tech-reviewers ..subscribed!
Same ship as you. But...😅Asus malaysia just lost 2 fans
So 6 inches is small nowadays?
😏
Thank you for this video. I'd watched the Zenfone 10 launch video and needed a decision between the S23 and it, and now it's clear to me I have to go with the Samsung---kind of unfortunate.
if you plan on keeping the phone for a while the samsung is better because of the 4 android version updates
If the price is comparable I would definitely go for S22 last year as opposed to Z9. But where I live Samsung's $400 more expensive...
I prefer the Zenfone, better battery life, headphone jack, better screen, no glass back prone to crack and glue to the back...
Samsung phones are good but run out of storage fast because of the Samsung 34 default apps that always have updates & that burns through storage quick & you Can't even disable some apps Zenfone very stock android you can disable apps & not many pre installed apps so yea
@@chromaticvisuelleit doesn't have a better screen, in fact it's the other way around
Seeing after an hour.
Props for the video and a huge thumbs up from Mozambique.

Great, fair review! You pointed out stuff other reviewers have missed.
Thanks for the video comparison. I just confirmed trading in my S22U for the compact S23. Yea, back to smaller phones.
I enjoy listening to your voice, clear and crispy.. well done
The price tho, 360usd difference is huge. Zenfone 10 is already good for its price.
I love that the Zenfone has a headphone jack. Instant buy for me because of this.
I wish you would review mid ranged phones as well and not just flagships! I really appreciate your reviews
Thank you so much, your video helped me decide for the s23. I really like the zenfone but no one else mentioned the vibration when listening to music, that’s one thing no one told me about the Xperia 5 iii and when I bought it I hate it.
I just discovered THANKS TO YOU AND THIS VIDEO about Keys cafe and holy molly its so fascinating and adorable my keyboard is now glowing thanks ;D !!
First time in this channel? Samsung biased channel for you
Great comparison!
Get the s23! It's actually just outright better overall.
Get the S23 and buy accessories with that $180 like powerbank or Samsung earbuds.
In my country asus is not official release zenfone anymore the only phone they sell is rog phone. So the only way to buy zenfone 10 is buy it from seller make it even more expensive and dont have any warranty 😅
Interesting that the price could be so different. Here in Indonesia, Zenfone is $300 cheaper than S23, makin it harder to decide
O hate it that these sizes nowadays this is "small" phone, when back then this is more mid size
I'm in disbelief that Ella points out crucial details of a phone which are not covered by even some of the biggest tech reviewers! You're doing a wonderful job.
Really love your calling out the small details like the uneven cam bumps and bezels. Definitely deal breakers for me 😅
I would definitely by the zenfone 11 but i would appreciate it if they maintain the same shape and size and increase the yrs of software update
Are you using a screen protector on your S23? I feel like it's so difficult to scan my fingerprint with a screen protector on. No matter what screen protector I use.
Turn on touch sensitivity under display settings. It is recommended when using screen protectors.
@@nobigdeal4me Thanks for the suggestion, I tried that previously and still can't. I may have very faint fingerprints? Especially after washing hands I just can't get it to work.
Same here. The S23 fingerprint sensor is the worst i've ever had on a galaxy device.
That's lousy ass unecessary under display fp for you.
Just fking use a physical always working side fp
I have both the S22 and Zf9. The fingerprint reader on the Zf is MILES better than the S22 because it NEVER misses. I never need to double tap, not even when my finger is wet. On the S22, I often need to press 3 or more times to get it, and if my finger is wet, I have no hope.
The S22 has particularly bad heat management, so the Zf9 beats it easily there as well. The S23 vs. Zf10 heat management gap might be better though.
I can't really tell from the video but, as you have both, which of the two is taller/heavier?...thanks!
Awesome to see your channel taking off and doing well. you do great reviews! keep up the good work!

Hi, thank you for your review. A question: while Samsung's phones come with DeX, does this new Zenfone come with a desktop mode?
Nope, only Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei have desktop mode
You can probably plug it in and screen share tho
@@abrahamalbert-onajobi9137 it seemed to me that Asus had a sort of desktop mode on its ROG line of smartphones... But I might be mistaken

Great vid as always Ella. Also, cool new desk setup. 🙂
Thank you! 😁
What a joke.
Anything with width more than 68mm IS NOT COMPACT.
The only contenders is Sony Xperia 5 series

Ella, what camera do you use for recorde your videos?
Peace! ✌️
Very comfortable overview, thanks.
I just wanted to add zenfone supports next codecs: Bluetooth® 5.3 (HFP + A2DP + AVRCP + HID + PAN + OPP), supports LDAC, AAC, Qualcomm® aptX™, aptX™ HD, aptX™ Adaptive, aptX™ Lossless
while in samsung only A2DP, LE,LDAC,AAC
I think it's a good battle between audio vs an extra camera there would be any small phone wich its in the middle
Also in my opinion those samsung photos look a little bit over processed to me
Pricepoint in México are about the same in mercado libre

Exelent review, I think the plastic material makes the phone a little bit more affordable, other than that in my opinion I don’t really care too much about the phone cosmetics and or camera lenses as long as the zoom gets better which means bigger camera lenses, right? I do like the smaller phones over bigger phones, the smaller the better, but the bigger the better too, as long as I can hold them comfortably in the palm of my hand! 👌😺🥰📱✨💎
I'm curious how well the cellular system works. SA 5G, VoWiFi, VoNR, band aggregation, carrier compatibility, etc. Right now I have an Xperia 1 III that's so dismal at cellular that I travel with my old phone.

I started looking at ASUS Zenfone 10 for two reasons:
1. compact size
2. 3.5 mini jack (2:57)
I had the Zenfone 9 and 100% of the time I was using wireless earbuds. Plus the headphone jack collected dust and dirt over time.
No mention of storage, which is up to 512mb on the Zenfone. No mention of water resistance for the phonea either. Zoomed in video would have been nice as well. Other than that, nice review.
Great review! Lots of detail and interesting info. A really useful comparison. Thanks 👍🏾

Nice compact phone with unique rear design, but for cameras, updates and bezels I prefer the S23.
Side button of S23 can also be used for opening the camera or many other things by pressing it twice. Go to settings and then Advance features to enable it.
