  • Hi Spacecats, I'm Dr Maggie Lieu and welcome to my channel, where you can find all things space, astronomy and physics! Last week's aurora was pretty ( the first of many to come ) but did you know for some people aurora is bad news?

I live in northern Kentucky. I tried to find Aurora for 3 nights but was unsuccessful. I also tried using my phone camera for a boost in search sensitivity. I looked toward the north but never saw anything. We do a have a lot trees that obscure the low horizon and that may have been a factor.

One dedicated person here in HAwai'i used her camera to see an aurora. She said her own eyes couldn't easily see the auroral display very well, but the digital sensor in the camera captured the scene much better. It's rather rare to see such things out here, but folks living during the Carrington Event in 1859 reported auroras in Hawai'i that were clearly visible to unaided eyes. I'm awed that this happened; it brings me a sense of humility. Aloha to you and your space cats out there in the more northerly regions; this is probably old hat for you.🤣

Was so gutted to have missed the Aurora, all my friends sent me pics saying "Are you seeing this?", but I wasn't aware of it as I had been so busy doing other stuff. I'm glad they saw it and thought of me though, apparently were getting another one soon and I am going to be ready and steady with my Camera! Gloroius as ever Dr. Maggie, thanks!

Thanks another v interesting video again.
Given the magnitude of this event and the fact that we "Got off lightly" . I wanted to ask if that was in part due to the particular polarity relative to Earths? or did it just graze us(Timing)? or was it purely that enjoiners know their stuff?
    Happy Space cat.

It was a bit cloudy but I remember seeing a solar storm last year and it was all over the sky in Alberta (Canada) during nightshift. I will never forget that, it was almost like some are closer to Earth

Great video! This shows that just because things are pretty, doesn’t mean they’re not dangerous. Can electronics be hardened against the effects?

Interesting. I was wondering all day if any damage was reported. Apparently, many people were expecting this to effect power and it did not.

Dr Maggie - great channel thank you. I haven't yet seen all your videos but there's one thing I think a lot of people are confused about. I'm familiar with the idea of an observable universe and I'm familiar with the idea of being able to photograph the cosmic microwave background from 13 .8 billion years ago but how do these two things correlate in terms of the observable universe? What is the shape of the observable universe? Is it a 91 billion LY sphere or a 13.8 billion LY funnel. If you ever get a chance to explain I'd be delighted and I suspect many would be too.

The 1962 movie "Day of the Triffids" based on a 1951 post-apocalyptic novel, paints a nightmare image of the world in turmoil after a nighttime cosmic event.

If the storm was a G5 and had no adverse effects, is the scale wrong or was the storm incorrectly labeled? The selfie was great.

Thanks, Dr. Maggie. Your hair is extra pretty today.😍 It's a bit startling that an event in the year 775 was 10 times the size of the Carrington Event. Another one like that will be coming at some point.

And when we walk away from binary code in to full falve than oldo the signals schink when you are above the aurora 😍 youl stil reseve debiation and are able to translate the radio transmissions.
Nou it is with so match power on to les of
So if normaly youl reseave ((-100{{{-500)
And that schinks in to -10(-50 ) the release stay of 000000
Jad full falve is able to read this still .
Oldo it is able to counseling out elchader and to scramble the line of conections jad when to understand how the wharp is going youl stil are able to reseave bi going in the other direction how the warp is warped towart your position of reseaving🎁🌱🎁
Like they dit in panic sending in oll directions and do to shaped focus translations and warped space directions to reach voyager in the past😍🤣😍

Given that this is the highest rated geomagnetic storm why was there minimal damage versus other events that did much more damage? Is there a way to analyze which G5 storm will be much more dangerous or cause severe damage? If that can be predicted, then why not power down the grid to prevent damage? Is that a consideration? I’m told some transformers can take up to a year or more to replace that are required for power transmission. Whole regions could be without power for months. Are we that vulnerable?😮😳🙀🫣

First and foremost, a hearty hello to all the 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬! We need a 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐭 emoji. Moving right along... In our little neck of the woods, the South Shore of Montréal, and at 2am ET to 5am ET, we tried our best to observe them. Even with a fairly clear sky, they were elusive. There were what appeared to be wavey patterns in the dark night sky. Yet, none of the colours as like those shown in the breathtaking photos of the auroras that were shared online. The wavey patterns that we observed may have been due to sleep deprivation and to too much coffee. 🤭
