This is why I've loved this Galaxy S10+ for so long.
Snapdragon 855 with the Adreno 640. 8GB RAM. Pretty sure it's 8GB of DDR4 2133MT/s, but don't quote me on that. Plus it has the UFS 2.1 file system and I've used newer phones with UFS 2.2 that only read at 200ish MB/s, an mine reads at 700+ MB/s.
Like, all Samsung Galaxy phones are good so long as you start at the $100 mark, but a 3 year old Galaxy S10 will beat the newest $150 Galaxy A12 or 51 or whatever they have out at everything. They always put powerful GPU's in them and they just keep on keeping on. I do wish it had 90hz+ for the display, but who cares if your phone is only pushing 20 fps at 720p. I have 3x resolution options, I think the first one is 720p, then 1080p, then 1440p. I just run 1080p because you can't see 1440 pixels on a screen that small. I mean, dang, I have a 27" 2560x1440 144hz PC monitor that looks smooth as butter.
But, yeah, then Samsung has that gaming software that lets you upscale/downscale your resolution by a percentage of your choice if you do need another 5-10 fps.
And the Snapdragon 855? Way ahead of its time. 8x cores that handle whatever you throw at them. You'll never max that out unless you're using a program designed to do so, like some kind of video converter software or video compression.
And with all that said, I'm a PC gamer that has a Ryzen 9 5900x (12 cores/24 threads with 64MB L3 cache), 2x16GB DDR4 3600 C15 dual rank RAM (obviously running in dual channel, too). Dual rank has been shown to give up to 10% gains in some games. It's why I hunted down and chose this RAM G.Skill Ripjaws V Series RAM. Therre are 3x models of it that are all labeled the same: 2x16GB DDR4 3600 C16 (I lowered my sub timings so that's why I have C15). Top that off with the 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus that's PCI-e 3.0 so, it hits 3500 MB/s read speeds and I have 2x M.2 slots, one PCI-e 3.0 and one PCI-e 4.0, so I'll be getting the 2TB Samsung 990 Pro next and put it in the 4.0 slot just because. And I have 3x SSD's and 3x HDD's, (2x are 1B HDD's in RAID 0 and 1 is a slow WD Blue 3TB 5400-5700RPM drive that comes in handy for games I don't care about and just storage and back up). Corsair HX1200i PSU because I used to mine Eth with RX480 8GB's.
My CPU is tweaked, too, and can hit 190 watts (142 watts stock PPT) and scores on par with 12700K's, despite being 3 years older. I LOVE picking out PC parts. I have SAM enabled, DirectStorage is becoming more popular for near instant loading times. Forspoken was one of the first to use it and you could load into the game in like 3-5 seconds and fast travel 4 miles across the map in 1 second or less.
Sorry, PC's rule. I even have the DroidCam3 paid software to use my S10+ camera on my PC and use any of the cameras like for live streaming.
That's the biggest benefit about Galaxy Sx phones. They have unrivaled camera quality. I remember my first Galaxy Sx phone, it was a Galaxy S3. Picture quality was mind blowing. The S4 was good, the S5 was smoother... the S7 was a fail. 4 cores over heated doing DoorDash which would make one core shut down to cool things down and my phone would become barely useable.
The S10+? NEVER slows down or even gets warm. I used to think I'd get an open box S20 or S21 (+ or Ultra or whatever) if I broke this phone, but really... I'd be totally satisfied just replacing it with another S10+. It has HDR, AMOLED display, Dolby Atmos, killer camera quality and plays every single game at max settings perfectly smooth.
Real Racing 3 was always the game that was my go to benchmark. That and Walking War Robots. The Galaxy S7 struggled in those games while the S10+ eats them up like nothing. Asphalt 9? Too easy. So I'm here looking for some games to challenge my phone.
Eventually phones will be doing ray tracing like PC's and consoles.. that'll be wonderful. Imagine a Cyberpunk 2077 style game or a Control game for Android with real time ray tracing and real time calculated light bouncing and ray traced ambient occlusion.
Control would be a perfect starter game for a powerful Galaxy Sx phone that can do ray tracing.
They'll never TRULY match PC graphics because the details don't have to be so precise on 5 and 6" screen vs PC gamers playing on 27" 1440p and higher screens, but it will still LOOK the same.
I'm just wondering when they are going to add CPU's with SMT (or for Intel guys, "Hyper Threading") to these phones. Sure, 8 cores have been enough to do everything SO FAR that you throw at it, but when ray tracing make it to phones, there's gonna need to be more threads to make up for the weaker CPU's they have.
Think about it, a cell phone CPU doesn't hold a candle to a PC CPU. I pull 95-135 watts in games on my CPU and 180 - 205 watts on my GPU. The whole phone probably doesn't go over 10 watts under a heavy gaming load.
And I have close to ta total of 9GB of storage space... which is about to be 11GB when I grab a 2TB Samsung 990.
I'm not knocking phones, they are very impressive for what they can do with such small power, but honestly, it's because the graphics are extremely low texture and more about the illusion of bright lights and stuff.
When games look like Control or Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, I'll be blown away. I mean, I'm not even sure the best Galaxy Sx out (what is it, a Galaxy S23?) could play RDR2 (no ray tracing) at the same graphical settings... let alone Control, Metro Exodus: EE, or especially the 2023-2024 PC games. But I'm sure looking forward to them trying to get close.
