thanks for this incredible post. chris merritt was, and still is, my most loved among the rossini renaissance singers of the late 80's and early 90's. never before I had listened to such voice: hermann jadlowker only, before him, bears a certain similarity. chris merritt splendidly incarnates the 'baritenore' à la nozzari. the eroticism of his voice while negotiating the low register, the richness in the medium and the excitement in the upper register, reaching stratospheric notes, his capacity of revealing the inner meanings of rossini's vertiginous coloratura are unforgettable. his capacity of singing from fff to pppp in all the range, uncanny. as magic is the emotion in his voice. sometimes his intonation goes slightly off pitch and his diction, for an italian born like myself, bears a roundness that it's not typical of italian language. but these characteristics make his voice even more exciting because his singing becomes more abstract and otherworldly: merrit is the quintessentially heraldic 'baritenore'.
the tempo in this performance is slow but I prefer it to the crazy velocity I heard more recently. after all it'a a very emotional and lyrical aria of the most proto-romantic opera written by rossini; it's not a horse race. the perfect role for merrit in la donna del lago was rodrigo, written exactly for his type of voice but, frankly, merrit sings this aria marvelously, with a carnality absent in other singers. SPLENDID!

Il solito Merritt: stonato, calante ed espressivo come un'oloturia sotto spirito.

I disagree, I think that his voice is perfect for the Bel Canto repertoire, but I agree that the tempo is slow in this piece. He was an outstanding Rossini tenor in the 80's, and he along with Rockwell Blake were the two most sought after tenors during that period to sing the Bel Canto operas.

Nonsense! Merritt was by far the best Rossini tenor of the twentieth century - and for the tempi he can do nothing, the conductor admits ...

Hey guys here there is somebody who is going to teach Chris Merrit (with Rocky Blake and William Matteuzzi the most important tenor of Rossini Reneissance) how to sing Rossini. Perhaps he can also give a few advices to Cristiano Ronaldo how to play soccer😂
