Finally, somewhere I can ask you the question and you may actually see. How is it possible that you and Walter White have the exact same voice. The match is uncanny!
Watching Charles' growth in his craft in the last 2yrs. leaves me speechless. He's approaching Jaco/Berlin territory, where instrument is extension of self. The only thing lacking is stage/ audience and a good band.
@@veyuslavic2590 he definitely has better technique than Davie (he may be the greatest technical player in the world right now) and is more diligent about making bass content but I generally don't like his feel compared to davies Also, I feel like up until recently (and to a lesser extent even now), he was stagnating and recycling musical ideas until they felt overused, such as that tritone he always manages to fit into his solos I did however enjoy this video and hope for more like it
I'd legit want an EP in this style. Some of the best parts has a "Flea auditioning for Meshuggah" vibe. The more fleshed out backing tracks is a huge improvement as well.
This whole thing was mind blowing, but the last 20 seconds were whatever comes after the mind has blown...I don't know what that level is called, but it's awesome.
that really comes down to the mixing of a lot of modern music, they push so much into the guitars by doubling up and layering to make the guitars sound "fuller" but ignore the bass lines behind them that are meant to help in that manner. then you see them live and hear the bass proper, and either it makes the song so much better, or highlights a bad band decision to put the weakest musician on bass / have it be pure pocket for the guitars expense.
Charles has to be one of greatest bassists of our generation. The amount of content with how technical the songs are is nuts! I don't know how you do it all.
Wow, this would fit right in as part of an 8 minute Dream Theater song. Someone put John Myung on notice! Charles, would love to see you cover the bass intro to Panic Attack!
Phenomenal. This is what expanding an art form sounds like (the ideas packed into this song could easily be 4+ songs if you take apart or expand or stretch or simplify some of these riffs, add another layer of simple guitar melodies/harmonies/fugue, and explore with dynamic drums over repeating/slightly different variations of those changing riffs, all for the sake of melodic tension/anti-climax/groove/drive/concept-the true masters are able to compose non-linearly, imagining the parts of a song like scenes in a great play or movie, all supporting one another, and coming together, as the method and meaning of the work). Now, all Charles has to do is joke-name everything that he writes. Because that's how you style on artists who take themselves too seriously, as well as, entire genres of music. This song could very well be named "Razorblade Gravy" or "Hammer Slapped Face" or "My Name Is Blood."
0:40 Sounds like a theme to a boss battle! Than 0:47 he reaches his final form after beating his ass! And than 0:40 the theme repeats itself! Damn, music can tell a story lad! Nice playing!
We are witnessing something very special. Charles is the best bassist that has ever lived. I am a pro myself, listening since iam 5 to bass music, studying the inner substance of the very best songs, so i know what i am talking about. I cant believe how fking good this dude is. Perfection in tone, groove, speed and virtuosity. plus he is also charming and funny.. dafuq!? I love u Charles!
I'd love to hear you with Animals As Leaders. I think adding you to that sound would badass. Not necessarily joining them just hearing you guys jamming together.
I'd love to see your process. How long does it take you to master a piece like this? How do you learn/write it? How many attempts does it take to record the audio? Do you edit mulltiple takes together or do you go for a perfect run? Is the video footage the actual footage of you playing or is it dubbed? I'd love to know!
When I got to know Iron Maiden and MetallicA back in 80s, I never noticed the bass. Partially because I had crappy cassette player, and I was mindblown by Bruce's vocal and James' riffs. For years I believed that metal was about vocal and guitar. Then I found Helloween in 1988. Markus Groszkopf opened my ears to metal bass. After that it's Steve Harris and Cliff Burton rediscovery for me.
I can't believe how musical and natural sounding all these flexing pieces are. That is a most unusual feature. Reminds me of JS Bach and I don't say that lightly.
I went back to some of your earliest videos just to see change in patina the on the base from your oldest videos to the newest. It's cool to see the evidence of all that hard work and gives the instrument some nice character.
I'm 51 and used to play bass way back in high school. Have always loved bass and love watching bassist play. You make this old man want to buy one and try again. Can an old dog really learn new tricks?
I'm speechless right now. Your ability to compose in just about any genre you jump into really is inspiring! I need to start dedicating more of my time to music again.
Cool stuff! Actually, when people tell me that Metal bass is easy, I show them the bass of Origin - Aftermath. Now I have one more video to prove them wrong! Thanks :)
When they say, ANYTHING Charles Berthoud is playing is hard to play, they are not wrong! xD Because he can turn anything to impossible level. You are great to watch as always, keep it up my friend.
Chucky boy, you make things look so simple and play so nonchalant. But that's what practicing regularly and committing to your craft does at the end of the day. Keep it going my man! You're a fucking beast!!!🤘👍🤘👍
Uhh. What can I say. Holy crap. Massive precision and speed. Being mostly a 6 string guitarist when that distortion pedal kicked in I felt like I'm definitely out of a job. Lol. Amazing 👏

Guys, thanks for the suggestions, but I meant I want Charles to make more prog metal tracks...
The only bad thing about this song is that it ends. I want more of this Charles!!!
100% agreed. got a very Polyphia vibe there. really really cool dude!
i'd say otherwise
bad thing for me is that it's only 1:14 long
came here to say the same thing. can we please have a full album of this?!?!
I could recommend a number of albums that sound similar to this if you want.

A really well-executed 7/8 6/8 4/4 metal song!

Look up Omnific. Twin bass metal/djent.
That's a mixing gripe more than anything though.
