- 'The real King Arthur a sixth century North British hero'
A lecture by Prof Andrew Breeze for the Leicestershire Archaeological & Historical Society.
After centuries of controversy, the mystery of 'King' Arthur can be resolved. Professor Andrew Breeze of the University of Navarre, Pamplona will look at how analysis of his Twelve Battles listed in the ninth-century Historia Brittonum locates all but one of them in Southern Scotland and the Borders. We can date them as well, the last of them being in 537 at 'Camlan' or Camboglanna (Castlesteads, Cumbria), following a 1935 suggestion of O. G. S. Crawford.
The Arthur who emerges will not have been a king, but a daring British commander raiding other British peoples during the 'volcanic winter' and famine of 536-7. His feats soon made him a hero, then a legend. After nearly fifteen centuries, Arthur can today be seen as a figure not of myth, but of history.
