Volkswagen Taigun First Drive Review: 10 Reasons Why It Lives Up To The Hype!

  • The last time there was this much anticipation around a Volkswagen launch in India was in 2010 with the Polo and Vento. Now 11 years later we have the Taigun, a VW designed in India, made in India, for India, so naturally there is a lot of hype surrounding the Taigun! The taigun will launch in September 2021 and will come in two trims, the GT-line and the standard variant. While the GT will be powered by a bigger 1.5 litre 150PS motor the standard variant will come with a 1.0 litre 115PS petrol engine. The Taigun will rival the Skoda Kushaq, Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.

In almost every review for a new car in India, I keep hearing Indians like chrome, Indians like chrome, so the vehicle design loads up on chrome elements everywhere. Where do automakers get their data from? Who are these Indians who like chrome so much? Frustrating that perfectly good cars are made garish with overload of chrome.

I truly agree with you. This design sucks and the same model gets different class design in European market. The Crome is worst of all. Don’t know why VW is releasing Stone Age design now. Why can’t they get the same design like European countries. India is no less any major markets in the world.

Looking at the feature lists and omissions in Kushaq Vs Taigun. It looks like they’ve spoken to each other and placed the 1.5 version in a way where automatic buyers go with VW and Manual with Skoda.

    The Cons mentioned:
The smaller size and height does not matter much. In some ways it gives better handling and city driving experience. Longer wheel base matters more and I found the Taigun quote on par with seltos in interior space.
The 3 seating on the rear depends a lot on the sizes of the 3. 3 large adults is difficult in any width of a car. Whereas 3 average or slim adults could fit in my Fiat Punto!
Diesel engine is preferred by only a small segment now. It’s not a complete loss for VW
The real con is the lack of feature vis-a-via the price ! This is the greatest problem with Kushaq and Taigun. Wish VW had simply used a 1.5MPI like everyone does and matched features and price of the segment favourites.
Going simply with German Safety and build and quality won’t work in a feature for price crazy country like ours !!

    Hello,
Taigun 1.0 Topline manual vs GT 1.5 manual. Which is better in long run. For GT manual I have to compromise on some very good features but will get a bigger engine. Topline has all features, but concerned about smaller engine.
I am getting a good deal for both the vehicles from dealer. Onroad price of both cars is very close. Which is better? Pls suggest.

    • @pchengi1786
      @pchengi1786 Рік тому +4

It just doesn't work that way. Every bit of the car is designed carefully, keeping in mind structural integrity, safety, and overall efficiency. Just increasing the width and the length will require completely different structural strength requirements, and will change the weight, and will likely require a change of the engine itself, all of which will put the car well above its present price, and somebody would be commenting that if only if they could have decreased its width and length, and cut down the costs, it would be a super hit for sure!

Can the Taigun be considered as an upgrade? I don't think so except for the engine option. The features list is also less attractive. Owners of other VW models may not think it wise to spent on an over priced hatchback looking vehicle.
Maintenance charges of VW cars are very high compared to other makes. I own a 2020, so called, updated Vento 1.2 L TSI automatic. I need a visit to the service centre almost every two months to rectify some faults. Due to Covid restriction, the car was not used frequently. Out of the total run of about 10K kilometers, majority was for visiting the service centre which is about 29 Kms away!

Vehicle looks decent, but lack of diesel will hurt VAG greatly as Turbo petrols are very thirsty if driven hard and people buying this will not be driving with light foot, else there is no point in opting for this. In a country where the famous phrase "Kitna Deti Hai" is prevailing, VAG could have considered a diesel option. This will be priced premium compared to Kushaq and top of the line GT variants will easily cross 20L in most of the cities, which is a hard pill to digest, considering the size of the vehicle. If VAG has sorted DQ200 gearbox issues, improved after sales service, customer experience & more importantly reduce maintenance costs, still remains a question. Would be interesting to know how it fares in GNCAP tests though, as it should perform more than the Korean twins who have failed miserably in this aspect.

VW is European, so they apply the philosophy that prevails in Europe. Here, diesels are very popular, but in estate (station wagon) cars, which are often used to tow boats and heavy trailers. Diesel is also more expensive than petrol, in Europe, so nobody is stupid enough to sell a small car with a diesel engine. Only big SUVs and estates have powerful diesel engines, and their bodies are built to dampen the vibration etc. Another thing killing diesel here are the extremely high road tax car owners have to pay, if they own diesel cars, so diesel is getting less and less popular. In India too, after the new emission standards came in, car makers simply dropped their diesel models instead of investing lots and lots of money to develop new engines.

Thanks in advance. Anyhoo. For the price tag, i think the overall package is standard stuff. Also, the bootspace, sheesh, so small. The ground clearance is also on the lower end, which is a con. My personal preference in this segment still remains the ever reliable, proper SUV Renault Duster. The bottom line is quality vs quantity, between the korean brands and Taigun, this has a great engine, transmission and hence great ride quality. The interior and the features that come with it like the touch controls are great too. Btw what's with the name TAIGUN? Feels odd for a SUV.

For vfm perspective diesal will always rule for 1.5 and above engines. I think polo owners should stick to thier cars for the fun to drive thingy unless they are replacing thier car for a bigger boot. If big is wt u want then spend some more and move to a higher segment. This segment for the price doesn't make sense. You don't get space here then wt r u paying for. This is an upgrade (in terms of height only) for Polo owners and a downgrade as far as many standard VW features are concerned. The one touch window buttons and all window roll down through key fob (great for our hot weather conditions) are features every VW owner has appreciated in their cars. Leaving them out shows too much cost cutting and a lack of knowledge of (or even care for) customer feedback. I think Vento owners who were looking for this car to launch would definitely be disappointed with the lack of room in the Taigun. The main reason why we opted for a Vento when it was launched was because of the extra space it had over the polo. What good is an SUV without comfortable space for at least 5 people? The seat for the middle passenger in the second row is extremely uncomfortable with a hard back rest (just like the Kushaq). AND No VW, not all Indians love the overloaded chrome treatment. I don't know what kind of surveys you have been running.

VW Polo is good driving & missed a lot in features & interior design when compared to its rival i20 which is Jack of All Trades, that's why i20 becomes the most wanted in Indian market... now with Taigun, they made all the things right, so VW would have now planned to sell this in more premium price range, top should be 21 lakhs, which will make obviously the competitors celebrate... Considering the too bad cons, they should make price lesser than Korean rivals, otherwise again Creta will remain the King of the segment...

Very disappointing to say but it’s most affordable Volkswagen polo comes with
    1)better quality back wipers,
2)one touch up & down power windows on all,
3)anti pinch power windows on all,
    4) hold the key for auto up & down from key fob
    5)much superior roof fabric
    &
6)most of all much elegant looking color scheme for interior for seats, door panel & dashboard of the car.
Don’t understand why are Vw Taigun & Skoda Kushaq miss these basic features which we are so used to & loosing its core values for German engineering at its best.
    Very Not Volkswagen & Skoda.

Exactly what I was thinking. VAG has not realized how much the features you have mentioned are appreciated in VW cars. Introducing these features in future face lift versions of this car will be so unfair to the people who buy it right now. Very much like the experience of buying a Vento when it was launched with a very basic music system (only CD and radio, no aux/mp3 support) and no steering wheel controls.

#Zigwheels This is a question i want to know, why can’t we get the latest updated Taigun model like European countries. Why they always get us the cheap looking cars. Is it due to the budget constrains ? India is growing market and everyone is ok to add that extra chip to get the new one and please stop generalising all Indians like chrome. Indians like class not chrome. The way you said is that instead of windscreen we like chrome screen.

give it some length (50-100 mm), some width / shoulder room inside (30-50 mm), throw in an art leather seats with ventilation, and they have a segment beater on their hands..
this at current price would still be expensive as it is still a petrol engine but still pretty good VFM considering the fantastic 1.5 TSI it gets..
panoramic sunroof and electric seat adjustments are strictly optional!
maybe some bonnet insulation? yes, please!

Good video..can you confirm if the big chunks of foam can still be found stuck under the bonnet and fenders for vibration reduction ? till date none of the youtube channels or car review channels have spoken about it...WHY ? If you are true to your customers why dont you talk about this issue that can easily attract rats n the purpose of these foams is compromised by design...Is this what they think Indians deserve ? BTW i own a Fabia for 10yrs now n this car comes no where near to the build quality...shame...if they get 5 stars i will be very happy...but the foam...a BIG NO NO

May I get ur expert review on below my que ?
I have TAIGUN and get it by 9th Dec 2021 from Ahmedabad Landmark but last Sunday I also get your group company's car Skoda KUSHAQ.
As per media review mostly both car are same in technical specifications but as I feel 60 - 40 difference in suspension performance.
Than I check both car brochure and come to know there is difference in front suspension only.
    TAIGUN:
McPherson suspension and stabiliser bar in front
    KISHAN:
McPherson suspension with LOWER TRIANGULAR LINKS and stabiliser bar in front
    Here my question
Is there have any effect in suspension of car by lower triangular links and
what is role of lower triangular links ?
because due to it KUSHAQ suspension is batter than TAIGUN as I feel
Sir, I am at ahmedabad gujarat. I also concern this matter to work shops but I don't satisfied to understand this technical difference.
My car has not working well during off road and little strong speed breaker and city ride during up and down road.
So is there any damage part is suspension assembly ?
It would be very great of you if you can take this note on priority and seriously.
Kindly help.me to solve this confusion.
    Thanking you and best regards,
    Sharmil Patel

Extreme chrome is disappointing…seeking feedback is good…but what matters is , who are the audience….
Existing car users… which car segment users are those…
Prospective new buyers…what age group mix they are…
Wat factors considered, how would current VWiers will accept the new change…
I am going to miss real European interior

Turbo petrols are strange. You drive sportily and pay a penalty of fuel economy. So you can have the cake but not eat it!
Better is to have 1.5 MPI engine where you have no option but to drive sedately and get a good fuel economy in bargain..

    Creta is safer than taigun.
    - Air purifier in creta helps you protect against viruses and bacteria.
    - Creta has panoramic sunroof so that you can look to the sky and pray to God better to protect you in case of accident.
Taigun comes with ESP, traction control, rollover protection, brake disc wiping, multi collision braking, advanced cornering control(low and high speed), anti slip regulation, motor slip regulation as standard. Creta only has some and only offered in higher variants. So you know what to choose if you are looking for a safe car.

Taigun doesn't get a diesel engine, better compare it with the Creta Turbo petrol not diesel, and off-course the 1.5litre, 4cyc TSI engine is much livelier, powerful and faster than the 1.4litre, 4cyc GDI engine.
