    • @bawar112

and then fucking lays down facts which get no rebuttal so the retards jump onto another subject and he equally destroys them, and so on and so forth.
He knows his shit, since he can back up his self aggrandisement everyone can just suck it.

DM584 yeah I agree. I do think he's very knowledgable in his field in some aspects however quite naive in others. He also doesn't know how to argue very well, and his stats are off a lot of the time.

Dave, I think Reza Aslan gave a brilliant response to the question raised by your supporter at the conference and clarified his perspective and also indirectly refuted your claims about his views. You should at least acknowledge when he makes a rational point and prove your neutrality and journalism instead of continuous denigrating, even if you don't like the man.

A rational point was not made, I think you are just one of many million people who believe aslan is always right because of his 'whataboutist' and clearly biased arguments on Islam, purely because he knows trends in the online world and just echoes a bunch of regressive arguments around doesn't mean he argues in good faith
egin this video he brings up the fact that women are not 100% equal to men in non Muslim countries, purely a deflection when the fact is women are far less equal in Muslim majority countries where strict adherence to the quran is practiced and in many cases, put into law. But he knows how to maintain a big public profile in the young and/or leftist group, because they focus more on ignoring the intolerance of such societies in the name of tolerance. It's ridiculous. The left needs a detox, and I know as a critical thinker (like pakman) I would still call myself a progressive and left viewed person with or without them, but I'd rather they just stop getting worked up/rational and use reasonable and critical thinking instead of chanting back whatever the sjw media like Junkee, Vice and Buzzfeed imprints in their minds. Same goes for far right loonies consuming info wars and fox news eveyday

I don't quite get the reason for this video to made. Are you happy that he listened to your perspective or angry that he won't listen to you (which he has obviously, so that wouldn't make sense)? A lot of supposed independent, free-thinkers claim they just want their voices to be heard yet when they actually are heard, they make 5:17 long youtube videos criticizing them for listening to their opinion. You also made a video saying he "cannot be trusted". While I agree with most of your points, I also think youtube personalities who make videos with audacious clickbait titles like "cannot be trusted" should also not be trusted. It would be great to see you both of you talk it out but check yourself first.

Unfortunate not to have cut Reza's actual comments with what he claims to have said in this video, to show that he is indeed lying to the face of this student. He has applied nuance retroactively to his statements (although the nuance doesn't really redeem them much). I like David's show, but you have to give credit where credit is due, Reza Aslan is an outstanding scholar in religion, I've read most of his books, and they reflect "to me" an interesting point of view on faith, being atheist in a religious family has not been easy in my case, but Reza has shaped my tolerance to accept others in a theological matter, although I cannot defend everything he has said in his carreer, but neither can I do for David, I've watch his show for over a year and sometimes I have to stop the video and check the truthness of some of his claims.

There's also huge differences. We hear about how in Muslim or Islamic countries women have practically NO VALUE. The husband can beat, abuse and rape them and women are never really protected. However the bible is very specific in how women need to be respected and treated fairly. for example:
      1. How to treat pregnant women Exodus 21:22
      2. Women can own buissiness
      Proverbs 31:24
      3. Mothers deserve respect just as father's Exodus 20:12
      4. Women had a right to their fathers inheritance
      Numbers 27: 6-8
      5. Rape not tolerated Deutoronomy 22:25-26
This is just few of many examples of how God expected men to treat women. but the truth is not just because someone claims their christian or even a religious person means they follow what the bible says but it's in the Bible regardless.

  • @birch1995

I'd like to comment on something very specific you said in this video. "I may disagree on the facts and that's where we generate worthwhile discussion". Isn't that worth nuancing more. I think one of the biggest problems today is disagreeing about facts. the discussion to clear up facts is ludicrous, petty, childish, and only a necessary step to get to start on the worthwhile discussion, which is the difference on opinion about the established facts. In an ideal world without liars and stupidity, facts would just be a given at the start of a good debate. I may have misinterpreted your intentions here but I do believe this is worth stating

Sure, you can make an argument about his mistatement of his sociology degree, but he is no doubt a highly educated and thoughtful person and I think he has brought a lot of discussion to the table about Islam overall. I really can't hate on the guy. The unfortunate thing with the original expose is that it elicited a hateful backlash rather than a nuanced discussion even though the video itself was totally reasonable. is Reza Aslan we really should be spending our time going after? It just seems hateful and unneeded.

    • @TjerkMuller
      @TjerkMuller 7 років тому +2

Wilful ignorance? Perhaps. However, from this exchange with this particular student, he seemed to make a lot of effort to make his words fit the facts. So it's quite possible he was unaware at the time of the CNN-interview that FGM is quite prevalent in the Gulf Countries and has been brought all the way to Malaysia and Indonesia by islamic puritans and fundamentalists; and is now trying to save face.
Now if his point had been that FGM didn't originate from Islam, and that it is predominant in Africa regardless of religion, and that many Muslims don't practige female circumcision, so that one shouldn't equate FGM with 'Islam', fair enough. But he should at least be knowledgeable and honest enough to note that Islamic orthodoxy - although by far not exclusively or originally an Islamic problem - has made FGM a problem within Islam, and Islamic theologians should put more effort in to critically think through it's theological credentials.
For instance, up until the mid-nineties, Al Azhar used to recommend female circumcision as an Islamic tradition, until even people like Yusuf al-Qaradawi were confronted with a slew of medical evidence that 'circumcision' was habitually practiced in a way which was detrimental to women's health. It's quite possible that the advent of the internet and the accessiblity of information and connectivity between people has something to do with this. Information is not only more readily available, but it spreads more easily.
So by 2005 they started changing their tune and re-examine the traditional theological arguments for female circumcision. So at least these Islamic scholars seem to think it is an issue within Islamic theology which deserves attention and critical examination. And these are scholars we would consider to be fundamentalists. So if these fundamentalists seem to think female circumcision and FGM are pressing issues within Islam/Islamic theology, how can any scholar of Islam pretend it's hardly an issue within Islam?
So either Reza Aslan is disengenuous or ignorant of the facts available, or a little bit of both.

Watching Aslan's appalling program on CNN makes it pretty clear that his putative "scholar" is not only a shameless apologist for Islam but is also open to embracing all sorts of barking mad religious lunacy. It seems to be a peculiarly "liberal" sort of ecumenical idiocy.

In fairness to Aslan, you titled the video "Reza Aslan Cannot Be Trusted", not "Reza Aslan might be wrong about a specific issue but he's a good guy". The title of your video is a very broad attack on his credibility and integrity.

well Aslan brings a large element of common sense to the table regarding Islam...and common sense in this day and age IS controversial.
      I'll sum it up
Aslan says that Islam is very diverse and that there are many sects within Islam whose beliefs and practices are diverse. Most are harmless some are extremists
Aslan states that Muslims cherry pick the info within the Koran and do NOT follow it to the letter - again this is logical as there are so many contradictory things within religious texts that it would be impossible to follow everything written
Aslan states that the extremism in Islam is a problem WITHIN Islam itself and is basically a localised problem in the Middle East

David I've been a fan of the show for years now and I agree w most of your views as a progressive; I also took a class taught by dr.aslan before I graduated. I have to say your assertion about Aslan is inaccurate or misleading. I think he is very knowledgeable about issues he talks about and definitely can be trusted to present the best evidence to his knowledge on religious topics.

Knowing little to nothing about the man before watching David's expose' on him, I am now of the mind that everything Aslan says is subject to scrutiny, which is as it should be for someone who takes so many liberties with his credentials. Only that CNN would give him his own show lends itself to Trump's claim that CNN is "fake news." But I would argue, Benjamin, that you are watching too much Reza Aslan, and not enough of The DP Show...

why you give it so much importance, if he thinks you dont deserve the chance to be in an argument with him. that is his opinion about your show. im not in a side of anyone, but it shows that you want to prove that you have a point deserves to get some attention by such a person(expert) as Reza. in addition, when he says you watch too much batman, that is just supposed to prove his opinion that your show may not worth it to give it that much awareness. personal opinion. and i think at least your show is good and civil, unlike these shouting human beings that they think they always be right about what ever the fuck they think of. great show keep it up.

I think David Parkman is much closer to Jordan Peterson than he thinks he is. Both consider themselves to be liberals but also want to reel in excesses on the left, especially radical dogmatism and dangerous pseudointellectualism. On the other hand they take very different approaches to it, and while both are intelligent they have clear that colour their critique with inconsistencies (like how Peterson can be unnecessarily harsh on the left for things the right is similarly or equally guilty of, and the reverse in Parkman's case). I think it would be really interesting for them to have a debate, especially if it was hosted by someone relatively neutral as a moderator.

Aslan is right about Indonesia and Malaysia, though. They are predominantly Muslim but there is no legal discrimination of women there, and far more women at the top of professions, politics, government admin and business than there are in the United States.

      WRONG.
You do not even know the difference between a fertility test and a virginity test.
You are therefore proven to be an extremely stupid and ignorant person. Did you drop out of school early?
Some overzealous recruiters demanded these tests but they are being reviewed and banned due to protests. I need not point out that many, including Western, countries got rid of outdated discriminatory laws after protests and progressive movements. This kind of law has more to do with patriarchy than anything else. And military/policemen are more patriarchal and macho than most.
So go away, chylla you stupid liar.

so resa's logic is that the law in america has men and women as equal, but the country "doesn't actually treat women as equal", and then so he lords indonisia over the rest of the world because it also has men and women as legally equal, when thats not unique. and doesnt mean at all that women are treated the same which is the point he made about america. and he is completely wrong to make that statement when the VAST majority of women in Indonesia suffer from fgm. but they are equal under the law? go fuck yourself

if you go there you will see a LOT of women with those wrestler-like "masks", covered from head to toe.....DRAGGING their husbands in stores to buy the stuff they(the women) want. you will also see old indian women in their traditional clothes...with their gut hanging out....it's not pleasant but they do have that freedom. it seems like the subjugation of women is more of a cultural thing than a religious thing...
