The clamp is to aid the sewer when ripping out a seam etc. It holds the fabric ( Sometimes called "the sewing bird" )… It is a shame someone replaced the cord with that generic "Made In China" cordset. The bakelite connector is gone and the original cord was fabric covered ( this can be purchased from old radio supply companies as well as a correct plug.

I don't remember for sure where I got it, but it's Fiskars brand. And definitely time to change the blade. Lol
