  • Coffee is big business in the islands. In fact, Hawaiʻi is the main source of domestically grown coffee in the United States. But crops and farms are under threat from disease and pests. And for years there’s been a battle to make sure coffee packages with labels that read “grown in Hawaiʻi” actually contain beans that are grown here.
Panelists include: Suzanne Shriner, Lions Gate Farms, South Kona, Hawaiʻi Island; Thomas Greenwell, Greenwell Farms, Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi Island; Sharon Hurd, Business Development Program Manager, Dept. of Agriculture; and Melissa Johnson, USDA Agricultural Research Bioligist, Hilo, Hawaiʻi Island.

What a beautiful way to combine agriculture and tourism! I can’t wait to learn more about Hawaiian coffee.

This is a good episode. The four panelists broke down the process from planting, roasting, grinding, blending, export. Good guided discussion from the moderator. My big takeaway is coffee agriculture has many opportunities in terms of job types. The most basic work that comes to mind is the actual manual labor of picking berries. That is hard, back breaking work. Few people are in the possession of fortitude do that type of work. There are other industrial elements for employment that were not discussed in great detail (but that's cool, it's a 1 hour show). Working the back room, data collection, data sorting, data scientist type of work to identify and monitor trends. Global prices high's and lows, how all these elements combine and effect the net profit. I'm looking forward to getting a bag of ground 100% pure Kona Coffee.

Why is 100% Kona coffee so hard to find on the mainland? Why is it so expensive? It is the best coffee I have had next to Vietnamese and Ethiopian coffee.
