  • India is now the biggest plastic polluter in the world, releasing 9.3 million tonnes (Mt) annually. This amounts to roughly one-fifth of global plastic emissions. The data is from a new study published in the journal Nature.
    The 2nd and 3rd biggest plastic polluters are Nigeria, with 3.5 million tonnes of emissions, and Indonesia, with 3.4 million tonnes. The study defines plastic emissions as materials that have moved from the managed or mismanaged system (controlled or contained state) to the unmanaged system (uncontrolled or uncontained state - the environment). India’s official waste generation rate is approximately 0.12 kilograms per capita per day. This, according to the study, is underestimated and the waste collection is also likely overestimated. Considering the population size and level of awareness and arrangements for plastic waste management, the study seems right. Ecoline- a start up is doing a great job in manufacturing apparel, especially jackets by using plastic waste. Our youths should come up with such " Social entrepreneurship " , in which SHGs, NGOs could be roped in, for effective segregation, incineration, recycling.. The general government is having a little fund and expertise in dealing with such a great threat of humanity.. Waste to the energy industry, has a bigger role to play in this.. Govt alone is not sufficient for this gigantic task.. Thank you, DTE. ❤

      Absolutely. But Govt still needs to a LOT more heavy lifting. Swacch Bharat Abhiyan needs more funding and more infrastructure needs to be built and scaled up. Along with that we also need more Social messaging. It is still sad to see passengers throw waste from trains.

    It's high time , government should frame some law for proper waste management

      Oi laws se kuch hoyega. You need funding, you need land to collect, segregate and handle waste. You need real hard infrastructure and that is what the Govt is doing with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

    Definitely need to compare with it average per capita waste generated by an American. It’d be 10x - 20x higher and yet there’d be no spotlight on it as the countries in the Global north have a free pass!

    • @yashchiman6465
      @yashchiman6465 7 днів тому +1

      This means india is in even worse conditions, Americans have lands rather than residential lands to dump waste, but we do not have any land, it's high time that India should make serious laws controlling population

    It shows total failure of the govts esp at the central.
    School teachers and students are being pressurized to give audio video reports on this issue every month. Swatchhta pakhwadas are celebrated and that is all .
    But in reality govts are not doing anything real for efficient waste management. There is acute shortage of Safai karamcharis . Machine usage is low. Karmcharis are underpaid and on low motivation. Waste segregation should start at Every House and proper disposal must be ensured. All companies should be forced to recycle or take back their packaging material.
    Plastics is in use at minutest places eg glitter in glues or sanitary or makeup products women use ...online shopping has increased the use of plastics.
    There is total collapse of waste management in India.
    No govt is ready to tackle this monster.
    Consumerism is increasing

      Centre was the one that started taking this seriously after several decades of neglect. It won't be solved in one term, you build a STP today, it will take 6 years for you to see the benefits of it that will accumulate over time.

    How can this article be used for analysis of plastic pollution when they seem very clearly biased by underestimating emissions from high income countries ? That way India can be the least polluting if its plastic waste is underestimated. Is this the kind of source which should be called reliable. Plastic pollution is an issue and India needs to do things to adress it but this video didn't make any logic other than a propaganda.
