Whoa, Eddbud, you have nailed it with today's perspective on Nike Zoom pods. Long a Nike fan I've now gone to Reebok and Puma, not for price so much, but for the experience I crave. How is it
that a company always known for innovation and groundbreaking materials, is stuck with a component that has fallen behind the modest competitors? The Epic React was wonderful for me ,but alas, nothing since has worked.

    • @EDDBUD

Edd - Brilliant review and summary. Agreed with everything you have suggested.
Very few innovations last for a long period of time. If this 1978 technology has been updated and redesigned - its still from that era.
Nike had flogged air units for far too long, extending this technology in tandem with more modern energy returning foams.
Getting to be the most desired shoe is the commercial dream. Keeping yourself there a very hard process with so much good competition. Reebok, Adidas, Saucony, New Balance and Skechers have proved this in recent successive years!

The Vomero 15 is awesome . Comfortable and I can run fast with it because a feel "the pop" bounce. The Vomero 14 was even more comfortable, the React midsole was ultra soft but it had near zero bounce feeling. A very slow high cushioning shoe for me.
If they're is only one thing I felt strange in the Vomero 15 was the arch ... felt initially it was for preventing overpronation but a few runs and that " strange" feeling went away and it became a normal neutral shoe.

I seem to remember zoom air didn’t debut until early 2000s, so I guess an improvement from the original tech, but still dated by today’s standards. What is iconic though, is the term: “Nike Air Peagasus”and “Nike Air Max” Adidas ultra boost, New Balance fresh foam etc.... just doesn’t have that iconic ring to it. So that’s where Nike will always win, even if the performance is sub par. Great video as always. 👍🏼

Wasn't into Nike but tried the Peg36 in a shop to get some feel for the sizing and walking around in them was very comfortable. As the Peg37 where only 10 euro more expensive but seem to offer so much more bells and whistles I bought them. Find them now only suitable for slower cadence/paces. If I go beyond 160 bpm, 11 K/hour they feel clunky and taxing on my achilles tendons. Bought some adidas RC2 at a discount and they shine at higher tempo's. So I ended up whith 2 pairs of shoes, that I rotate. Long slow and even walking: Peg37 and faster fun Adidas RC2.

However, today’s 10k - ran ‘pushing it’ - notched up another double 5 & 10k PB; all done with the wonderful Reebok Floatride 3. Thanks for the recommendation! I watch as much for the musical interludes as anything else, as a Radiohead fan Goodrich clearly has a lot to say. The Tailwind was amazing , my favourites to today remain the Vortex and Air Edge . What a great pairingalways found that the air soles made the shoes last longe for me and suit my footstrike, especially the ones mentioned here with the PU midsoles which were mega! I find the Tempo Next % and AlphaFly Next % great in that the air pods provide both energy return, more stability in the forefoot and longevity compared to just a Zoom X midsole on say the VaporFly.

@@EDDBUD Loved this video. I have been a big Nike (Air) fan ever since I got my Peg 89’s when in primary school back in the eighties. Currently I have both the Peg37 and the React Infinity fly knit as daily trainers in addition to the Saucony Speeds. To me, the midsole of the Peg37 feels a bit flat/dead compared to the Infinity’s (and the Odyssey React). Same React foam but it seems to feel quite different in the Peg 37’s, probably the density. Your trick with bending the Peg37 helped to bring them alive somewhat but I notice that I am avoiding them in favor of my other shoes in the rotation. Before React foam, I used to run in several iterations of the Lunar Glide. They were great shoes for me, but very poor durability as they would lose their cushioning after only 150-200 miles. I am now considering leaving Nike for a while for better value alternatives from other brands. I will pass on the Peg 38’s because the midsole with React/Zoom Air combo is just not doing it for me.

Zoom Air is gonna stay; Nike still has room to reconfigure Zoom shapes and it shoes with the new Turbo and Strobel designs. It’s also gonna be interesting to see how well Zoom pairs with the new foams - ie ZoomX.
The old Air bubble and Air Max is what I think is becoming dated. Now it’s just a cool looking design, but as far as cushioning and impact protection goes, it’s a brick.

I really enjoyed this video and I did have a pair of the original Pegasus, I thought they were pretty good, sort of dependable but nothing fancy, its interesting to see the 'centre of pressure' outsole remaining on the outsole (the lack of tread in the centre part of the heel) in a lot of shoes now. The best early Nike shoe of the early 80's that I had was the Terra T/C which had a Phylon midsole which was super light and responsive (better than the air pods).

  • @raya472
    @raya472 3 роки тому +2

Great stuff Ed but I have a slightly different take. I love zoom air (when done right) the more zoom air the better (yes thanks)
I think however, its max air that's played out, that for the most part is a deceitful form of gimmicky. Sure the air maxes from back in the day (90s) was great, huge and wonderful. But now nike has been doing us wrong with those child like air units...they can't even do the wrong thing right.
Its as if they think all the people from the 80s and 90s are either dead or can't remember how the original air bubbles looked and felt, so they retro stuff and cut corners. To me zoom air or air zoom is my favorite cushioning system...once done right.

I think if the technology works and its good they should keep using it. I'm not a big fan of just being trendy and doing what everyone else is doing. Nike has always been a great innovator where everyone copied them. Nike is still the trend setter with the knit uppers, the carbon fiber plates, the odd color combinations, etc... It was only adidas with the boost that Nike had to respond to which they did with react and all those non zoom air running shoes. But if anything boost was a godsend to nike because it allowed them to come out with a bunch of shoes that didnt have to utilize zoom air. Its probably a lot cheaper for them to make the shoes like that as well.
Also telling nike to stop using zoom air is like asking asics to stop using gel because they've been using it for too long. Or stop using shoe laces, its been used for too long (and oh yes, Nike do have lace less models). Nike just needs to listen to the consumer better. All these tight, restrictive and uncomfortable uppers and lasts are the reason I havent brought any nike running shoes for a minute. I had the Nike zoom structure shoe and those really did a doosey on my feet and legs. The bad press with Alberto Salazar doping and female athlete abuse is also a big thing. Nike doesnt give a crap, they just want to sell shoes and everyone knows this. That's why everyone stays away from Nike unless they have to. And we have (or had) to with the race day shoes. But now there are many carbon fiber shoes out there that matches nike.
Forget helping Nike, just help these other brands. That's how you make nike response anyways. They dont care.

  • @areksoo
    @areksoo 3 роки тому

Just my thought, but I think Nike wanted to keep the Pegasus line affordable and the Zoom X only on premium running shoes. That's why Zoom X is only found on the Next% and the Invincible Run. I think Nike is just running like the top dog. You want our best tech, then you are going to have to pay for it (Next%). If you don't want to pay that much, here's a bunch of mid tier shoes with some of the tech. Those mid tier shoes may never measure up to other competitors shoes. They might have dated tech, but at the end of the day, Nike is going to vastly outsell all those other brands. The main difference is Nike is the absolute king of marketing.

Has the originals in 83 cracking shoe, difficult at the time to get hold of like most of its runners as nikes supply chain was very hit and miss. Early 90's they really messed around with shoe with the pegasus racer tc and a total revamp of the shoe which caused a number of injuries for runners. Another great blog edd.

Hey Edd. Just wanted to provide some personal thoughts. I've owned UB's (older models definitely not runners), Peg 37's, Endorphin Speed, and React Flyknit and some Vapormaxes when they were labeled for running. I noticed that on my runs (I end up with ~500ft incline on my ~4 miles) and react foam ended up hurting my knees on the downhill, but the vapormaxes didn't. So I bought the Peg 37, because they had React + Air. I don't notice the pain from the heavy downhill on my knees. Your video mentioned that 12%, and it made me laugh. But I wonder if that 12% is enough to make it a little more comfortable so that passive performance of the air unit turns into an active performance boost since my knees hurt less.
But I also started wearing some knee braces that resolved it regardless of shoe. But I can say anecdotally, the air units helped me with downhill running, which sounds like that makes sense?
Just adding some more data to the pile. I don't think Zoom Air has had it's day yet, but I dont know the data on impact of Zoom Air vs React and other foams.

I don't necessarily think it's a thing of the past. I've really enjoyed it being deployed well in the Alphafly and Tempo Next. Those pods with ZoomX provided positively moon bounce levels of responsiveness. And the Peg 37's midsole did have a good amount of pop from the forefoot air, hoping the 38 fixes the upper so the shoe is more versatile. I do think React is getting a bit long in the tooth and could be upgraded to a slightly lighter material for use in more daily trainers, but that's a separate conversation.

My brother got me a pair of Pegasus 31 that lasted for 2 years. That shoe got me to run lmost every day. Then I got a pair of 34:s, half a size down and tight, which felt lighter and with extreme propulsion and far, far bouncier. I am still waiting for Pegasus to surprise me again. The branding feels old for sure.

  • @Anihalas

If it was finished we would have not seen it in the Tempo and Alpha. It's light and it works good with the foam. I really like the way it works with react too. It gives that little bit of extra cushion and responsiveness. It also makes me think the shoe lasts longer. I took my vomero 11 with front and rear pods to 2000k eventually. The last 500k the foam took a week after each 10k to get back into shape and without the pods I don't think the shoes would have stayed comfortable for the easy runs. I retired these shoes after 4 years.
Now GEL from asics.. that will only be found in heavy supportive shoes five years from now if you ask me. I never really felt it working in faster shoes and tempo runs. Or am I ahead of the topics now?

That was really interesting- thank you for your review! It was perhaps inevitable that Nike would lose some of its market dominance after such a very long run. The barriers to entry aren’t nearly as formidable now that nearly any company can tinker with the same EVA at the same manufacturing facilities in China and Vietnam. Enda’s almost immediate success from Kenya (but using mid soles made in China) attests to the remarkable spirit of innovation requiring much less relative capital investment than when Nike and Adidas were literally creating a market.

Keep the Zoom Air! And Bring back my favorite racing flats (Nike Terra TC). We don't need carbon plates, We don't need fly-knit, We don't need more foam, We don't need more energy return! We don't need 3D fit print! Steve Prefontaine, Bill Rodgers, Alberto Salazar, Dick Beardsly, Seb Coe, Ovett and Cram and Nick Rose didn't need it. We need the original waffle outsole! I wish the old Pegasus circa 1982-83 never went away! Don't know you remember the Nike Equator or the Nike Internationalist? When those shoes were discontinued as Nike began to advance their technology I feel they lost a customer base that never returned. I could seemingly never get the same shoe twice and the prices began to climb and there labor standards began to drop. Now I simply do not purchase Nike out of pure spite.

foam: it is the little bubbles of nothing (air - a mixture of gases) that really make it something. hoka uses a foam 'spring' sort of thing. all foams utilise 'air'. basically. they mess around with densities, to achieve various levels of springiness and squishiness. get a variety of 'ideal' combinations of those two qualities and ya git the right shooo for yooo. i believe the most comfy seat cushions utilise multiple densities of foam. so you get the best of both worlds. soft and plush as well as firmer and supportive. but with shoosies you want a bit of bounce. I've found that a slightly thicker (slightly squishy) insole does the trick for me on the firmer bouncy midsole materials, the air zoom 'airbag' ..still works imo. plus there is the opportunity to use such airpocketty things with newer foams as well....don't throw the baby out with the bath water.. or something.
    4 elements:
    squish (insole)
bouncy/springy midsole - perhaps even a layer of squishy foam if it also has some bounce to it.
midsole support (perhaps a higher density or just the right foam....for element no. 2)?
outsole grip/durability - higher density rubberised lugs etc.
most shoes don't get the combo of these elements exactly right. and the weight of the runner is a factor. every shoe i get that is not quite right i can think of what would make it better either for a nimble ground feel shoe, OR a more springy and cushioned one. some max cushion shoes are just all wrong. and some are just right. same same with the nimble ground feel shoes.
Also: I think sometimes the zoom air thing could be bouncier - vomero 13's seemed to have a bit more bounce to it than other air zoom implementations. perhaps there was just more airbag in that one compared with some others...and no doubt less than in yet other ones.

As for Nike, THEY'D BE BONKERS not to release Peg39 with upgrade of full ZoomX, no air pods and a 20/27 midsole.....and pitch as the very finest shoe for ALL parkrunners....... it'd steal share BACK TO NIKE for a decade.

Everyone now creates better trainers than Nike, and they are holding on to ZoomX by a thread to save themselves that is why they released the cumbersome Invincible because they don't have an alternative to other brands and the other brands are now destroying Next% records around the world.
The writing is on the wall, change or be left behind but they have their marketing to save their mediocre products.
