See for yourself why you should not put fine grade wool through a picker.

  • Someone sent me her fiber from a local mill and asked if I would assess it. She felt that the mill did not do the right thing with the fiber and caused the roving (not comed top) to be a bit torn up and full of nepps.
When someone sends me fiber to assess I send them back a detailed video and this is the video. The person wanted me to make this public to help others who might be in the same boat.
This was a 20 micron CVM sheep wool.
I tried to re-create what I received by picking and drum carding the fiber, which caused a lot of tearing and nepp formation. The picker caused the tearing because the fine grade CVM is a bit too delicate to take such harsh treatment.
I then used wool combs and make a combed top and it was really nice with that prep.
Lesson learned, and if you are sending a fine-grade wool to a mill you tell them you do not want it picked. If it's near the higher end of 20-23 it might withstand a drum carder. Ask your mill to sample a little bit and show you what it looks like. Or better yet, if you can get your hands on a drum carder, scour a little bit and drum card it and see if you like what you produced.
