The old Met Center was the coolest looking rink with those multicolored seats. Looked even better than all other NHL rinks today in 2021.

Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins has said that he loved playing at the Met Centre as it had the best ice, lighting, and the most spacious dressing rooms of all the NHL teams at that time.

19 years on and it's still a parking lot which they may do something with at some point in the future. It was 9 years before Ikea went up and they could have kept the Met there if they had made the store about 10 feet narrower. "that's progress"

My mom let me stay home from school in 3rd grade to watch this. I cried like a baby. Was very upset when the North Stars left.

And that was the last time the camera man had a job in media. What's more important, the plunger or the explosion itself?

I was standing there with my friends behind a Police barrier when this happened. I think we skipped school that day. I do know we parked in the Mall Of America ramp and walked to a controlled intersection to watch. Thanks for posting!

I get the team left but why try to explode an arena and not have a development plan for the lot

At 3:50 you can hear the cheer go up from the crowd on the other side as we saw that it was still standing.

Met Center demo in near past, Mall of America in the near future (maybe they will let the scrapers take it down slowly like Detroit)

So now... why is it, that whenever a video like this is uploaded, there never seems to be a date mentioned in the description?

This probably didn't go over to well in MN, 1998- 99 Stanley Cup Champion Dallas Stars

Wouldn't have happened if they stayed. Rich oil man eventually bought the team and spent like crazy to get top players there.
Of course they went broke in the end lol.

Sadly, nothing. Just an pointless overflow parking lot for the MOA. Maybe some of Ikea, but mostly a run down lot.

I cherish having the Stars in Dallas but still, they should still be in Minnesota. The actions that took them from Minnesota were utter BS.

It was the fans the local fans' fault. The team had attendance problems throughout their history. The original owners almost folded the team in the late 70s. The next owners almost moved them to San Jose after the 89-90 season. Local news paper & 1 news channel did a poll asking people of they cared if the team moved. 60% said no. After their run to the finals in 91, attendance became a problem again and the third owner and the NHL had enough.
      That's the short version.

@@danbratten3103 and a lot of people forget that. Most of it was blaming Norm Green.

We watched from inside the Marriott Bloomington across the street, and it was not smoky and hard to see from there. You could tell immediately it was a demo fail.

Part of the site is an overflow parking lot for the Mall of America and the other part of the site is an IKEA store.

This was almost two decades ago. The GED program and IQ score have or are being revised as we speak. In general I find it annoying when people relate the past be it near or far to modern knowledge and culture. They are no longer comparable. They probably sounded "a little bit smarter" to the audience at the time.

Not 1 bad seat in that building for viewing hockey. Best ice as voted by the NHL players the year AFTER the North Stars moved to Dallas. The Met Center wasn't even on the list, the players wrote it in. Bobby Orr said the Met Center was the best rink he played in back in the 70s.
