Holy Smokes you're hitting all the weird ones, Ive often wondered if there was an audience for reactions like this, hope you keep them up even if they don't pull in the numbers of Marvel movies.
Ayyy im genuinely grateful with this channel. I love being able to have time and space to not only watch these films..but to learn from them and hopefully provide greater value outside the entertainment. These films are the ones I truly remember and inspire me.
Yeah I'm so glad you're reacting to stranger and stranger things. But don't react to stranger things.
Just remember, anything that you personally like to enjoy there will always be an audience for.
Discovered the channel since he reacted to my two favorite films, Requiem for a Dream and Sunshine. So many other great choices on here. Most channels just stick to the same lineups. Anyway, high recommendation for Mysterious Skin. A poignant masterpiece that absolutely no one else has reacted to for some reason.
'this got chaotic as hell' at the 6-minute mark - thoughts & prayers for the rest of the movie james
You consistently react to really interesting choices. Its really commendable, im assuming its the fact your a filmmaker yourself! On top of the commentary the selections are always amazing
Calling this movie interesting is too generous lol.
Probably the messiest divorce film of all time. What an insane masterpiece!
Personally the way I read this film is that when a film has a title like "Possession", it's really a metaphor for how completely damaged Anna and Mark's marriage has become. They don't know how to be emotionally stable and both have unrealistic expectations of each other. This is why the creature is really a metaphor of how the pain of their divorce manifests the creature into their idealized versions of the other. Plus this was filmed a few years before the Berlin Wall came down. So to have the Berlin Wall is also a metaphor for their divorce too. Even the Subway Tunnel breakdown scene scared more than any other horror movie I've watched over the years and I'm saying this as a Horror fan. Isabelle Adjani blew me away in this and deserves an Oscar. But in summary, "Possession" really is a film of how division drains a person and how it can easily drive ourselves to insanity because we're all social animals who despise each other and yet need each other.
Genius film!
Thank you for reacting to the interesting corners of Cinema that are neglected by the UA-cam community. The stories behind the making and reception of this film are wild and worth going down the rabbit hole for.
never would have thought to see someone make a proper commentary and reaction to this film! truly one of the most bizarre and haunting films i have ever seen.
Greetings James vs cinema. Isabelle Adjani is a total beast. I saw this film on the famous 42nd street movie strip in the early 80’s. The whole cinema was gobsmacked. I felt chewed up by the middle and spat out at the end like the movie took a dump at the end and ‘mangled I’ was the result. If you saw The Driver 1978 with Ryan O’Neal as The Driver...that was Isabelle as The Player. Adjani is on the level of a Geraldine Chaplin...(another straight up beast) For your personal edification I suggest Adjani in The Story of Adele H 1975. Good lord. And if you have not seen it...I do believe you are ready for Cronenberg’s The Brood 1979. Enjoy James vs cinema. Good reaction.
Oh my gosh, the escalation in this movie is insane. Can’t wait to watch you do this!
For laughs, I or one of my brothers will sometimes reenact the Heinrich spinning around along the wall saying "Why don't you love me?!". Classic stuff. It's such a golden moment of out of the blue weird acting, it makes me laugh everytime. 😁
"I'm not watching two humans, I'm watching two hearts" ... really interesting!
My favourite scene from this film is the at the ballet school. Isabelle Adjani looking into the camera. Chilling.
So happy you had a chance to see this one. An absolutely remarkable piece of cinema.
Its an insane masterpiece, once seen never forgotten.
What a joy to watch someone discover it fresh.
hell yeah this is one of my favs! i love that ur doing lesser known films!
I love this movie - basically David Cronenberg meets Ingmar Bergman.
“This is crazy” (and you hadn’t even got to the creature yet!!)
is cool you have reacted to the long version of this unique movie. The creator of monster is Rambaldi, the same who made E.T. a year later 😊.
This is such a special movie experience. Love this and that you keep doing some more odd ones.❤
This same Year, Sam Neill Played The Anti-Christ in Omen III: The Final Conflict
yooooo, this is scariest movie I've ever seen. great vid!
This movie was a What the F moment. I saw it with my friends and I will never forget it.
Please watch "Queen Margo" (La Reine Margot) with Isabelle Adjani.such an amazing film
WOW this is weird... I had never heard of this movie before, but literally right now I'm watching another video, where someone mentioned it, not 10 minutes ago!!! 🤯
best movie ever basically, got to rewatch this in theaters a couple years back
Such a good movie
Holy shit! No freaking way you're reacting to this one!
James, I'd love for you to check out Pasolini's Teorema!
YESSSSS I love this movie so much
You should do BITTER MOON 1992 another crazy movie about the deep rooted primal hatred between women and men (or at least heterosexual women & men) 🎥🍿
I love this Movie 😍
Finally! Good shit man
Wow thought I was the only person you'd ever seen this movie
Yeah man, this movie is wild.
I watched this years ago and I was sweating while watching it.
Filmed actually right next to the Berlin wall, I'd even say against it.
Great reaction. I'm not sure I can really recommend the film, but Sam Neill makes a great Antichrist in Omen 3. He was on the short list for James Bond at one point!
Danny Phantom t-shirt!! Completely off topic but that was cool to see
Isabel Adjani is something else, i can tell ya 🔥
Oh yes people are getting you to watch some weird ones and its awesome i gotta be a patron so i can recommend some crazy ones until then im throwing reanimator your way as a recommendation here
One of the most shocking horror movies ever made.
So me
Danny Phantom 🎶He's a Phantom
The OG classic right there!
Bonkers film but great!
Dang, seeing princess mononoke in the theatre would be awesome… I’m a bit jealous!
First off, I partly want to apologize for some of the insanity that we in the Patreon let you watch.
🫨
Second, I always love how before Jurassic Park, Sam Neill was really into some controversy in film. So, only after Jurassic only thing changed was he’s a household name.
Isabelle Adjani’s performance in the tunnel is one of the most haunting performances of all time. Would also recommend the music video for Massive Attack’s Voodoo in my Blood, that takes heavy inspiration from that scene.
Love that video (and song)! Also “Plague” by Crystal Castles. They just straight up took that scene and made it into a music video which fits the tune perfectly.
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN. This film rocks!

Have a great day!
Never ever expected this one. Great choice!
Isabelle Adjani ❤️🇫🇷
My read of this movie is that each of the men in Anna’s life came to represent one of the ways she related to herself. Sam Neill’s character gave her a stable life with a child, creating a normal, passionless life. Heinrich offered her an elevation of the self, encouraging her to express and explore herself. But ultimately nothing could compare to the alluring appeal of the Creature, who offered an annihilation of the self, a truly freeing and damning self destruction.
Holy fucking shit, you actually did it. I always hoped you'd watch this but never actually thought you would. This is my favorite movie of all time, absolute masterpiece, completely incomparable, as is everything that Zulawski put out. Third Part Of The Night, The Devil and On The Silver Globe are also insane, but Possession is his most "famous" work. Really nothing can hold a candle to Isabelle Adjani during that subway scene.
Have you seen My Nights Are More Beautiful Than Your Days? That's my personal favorite Zulawski
@BandyGreensacks Sadly no, also still have Szamanka on my watchlist. They're all difficult to get a hold of where I'm from, I only managed to get Possession as a BluRay off of a shady UK site. Did manage to get the Box set from EUREKA! though.
Yes, let's go! I first tried watching this film a couple years ago. I guess I wasn't in the right mood because I turned it off after about an hour. A few weeks later, I gave it another shot, started it over and was completely blown away by the complexity of its performances, writing and direction. Now it's my second favorite film of all time (btw James, let me recommend my favorite film while I'm here - Tim Burton's Ed Wood. A must watch for any filmmaker, an all-time great movie about moviemaking). But back to Possession, it's a film that takes b-movie horror staples and levitates them to high art - there's really nothing quite like it.
are u jay bauman
@@parsnipappendectomy Nope, I'm Rich Evans.
@@parsnipappendectomy Jay Bauman's tweet made me go watch this movie. Then I decided not to trust his taste in movies and horror in general ever again.
@@MamadNobari his taste in horror can go a bit far into camp for me, but he has great taste generally. and possession is fucking awesome ur sleeping
HELL YES! This film intrigued, repulsed and captivated me all at once. Isabelle Adjani is on another level in this one.
i wrote my master's thesis about this incredible film and anna's character, thank you for introducing it to new audiences by selecting it for a reaction. i first saw possession at the age of 14 and it's been one of my favorites ever since. absolutely unforgettable film, one of the few films that seared in my memory forever since the first viewing. i am able to conjure up images of it at any given moment. it's such a singular film, and an exercise in how to use the mise-en-scène to convey meaning through symbolism.
hi do you mind sharing the thesis maybe? id love to read if possible
This film is insane; I was floored when I watched it a few years ago. Another Sam Neil film people will most likely recommend is "John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness." But it would be great if you could check out "Dead Calm," starring Neil, Nicole Kidman, and Billy Zane; not too many UA-camrs have reacted to that one.
Dead Calm is a good suggestion.
I love Dead Calm, it gets my vote.
Agreed, Dead Calm is quite good and Neil, Kidman, & Zane are great in it. (I do love In the Mouth of Madness though 😊)
Isabelle Yasmina Adjani is so good in this movie, her acting is honestly some of the best I've seen. Her eyes and expressions really sell everything and she steals the show by a landslide
the overwhelming acting and phisical exhaustion you feel from witnessing it is a trademark of this director. I recommend watching another one of his called Diabel (The Devil)
as for suggestions for other weird movies: Ravenous 1999 by Antonia Bird, and some of Ken Russels stuff - The Devils, Gothic, The Lair of the White Worm
Big YES for Ravenous 1999. That movie rocks. It has maybe the most unique soundtrack I've heard.
Devils would be interesting as well, as it can be read as a folk horror-esque film as well as a social commentary. It ALMOST gets a rare 5/5 for me, if not for the dueling with a fake crocodile...
OMG YESSSSSSS. Can't believe this just came up on my feed, my no. 1 movie
I can see why, it’s incredible.
i watched this movie a couple of months ago, and it never left my mind since then. Amazing performance by Isabelle Adjani, and honestly one of the most hauntingly beautiful movies i've seen. And i agree with you that this film is "physical", i felt like i need to catch a breath after watching it, very intense experience :D
I really appreciate the fact that you explore much more obscure movies than the rest of the community: suspiria, hausu and so on. Some "reactors" play it much more safely with blockbuster/clickbait titles which, sometimes, are really good or even classics but still only only a fraction of important movies in the history of cinema. Good job pal, I like your personality.
This movie is a masterpiece; And the other films from this director are also masterful. Highly recommend On The Silver Globe, one of my favorite films.
As a more obscure recommendation; Petrov's Flu is a beautiful film.
Classic! Talking Sam Neill did you not watch In the In the Mouth of Madness? ...Also talking about exhausting and horrifying good movies try the French Martyrs.....
More zulawski :
That most important thing: love
On the silver globe
Devil
On the silver globe is my fav underrated filmmaker
It’s really nice to see you reacted to one of my favorite horror films of all time.
This is THE horror movie that legitimately scared me since The Exorcist.
You are hitting the best horror films this season. After you hit Suspiria 18 and Cure I was praying to myself you’d hit Possession too. Zulawski is so awesome
This movie is too arty for my taste, but Adjani's performance is awesome. My first and only celeb childhood crush. I remember seeing one of her movies as a kid and could not believe human being could be that beautiful. Great actress especially for these type of high intensity characters. Sam Neill was also great.
defines insanity; yet strangely hopeful. Isabelle Adjani's performance is rightly legendary, yet Sam Neil screaming on the motorcycle lives rent-free in my head. Which makes it obvious how the camera is moving so fast - it's on a bike too.The film possessed this weird dual-status as prestige entertainment, winning awards at Cannes, yet also being classified as a 'video nasty' and banned in the UK I believe. I think the guy who did the creature effect also worked on Spielberg's E.T
There's an (unfinished) sci-fi film from the same director called On the Silver Globe whose production was shut down by the communist govt. of Poland I think, but it goes farther in pure insanity imo, of all the movie I've seen this one had me thinking 'how the hell does this exist!?'
also the film is VERY MUCH shot in Berlin, unmistakeably so (just like the Suspiria remake you reacted to)- and I guess you have opposite taste in cities/architecture to me if you think it looks cool lol
Isabelle Adjani from Herzog's Nosferatu. Other worldly woman.
So happy you watched this it's one of my favourite movies. I've seen almost every movie Isabelle Adjani is in, she's so fantastic in everything.
oh i love her in possession! i watched nosferatu because of her but i was underwhelmed honestly, what movies with her do u recommend?
Berlin is where I was born and live! Yeah, the entire movie was filmed in this city. The spiral staircase at the end is actually in a house I pass every day on my way to work. :) Thank you for reacting to this under-appreciated gem of a movie!
Thanks for separating yourself from the pack by reacting to wonderfully bat-poop crazy movies like this one; to me, an all time favourite film about a nuclear family facing adversity.
Okay... If you were to watch The Exorcist, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as a double feature, and then you thought, what would be an equally disturbing European made, double bill look like? Well, I believe it would be Possession, paired with Angst (1983) - an Austrian film that was heavily praised by critics for its amazing camera work, and also universally banned by censors for its graphic violence.
For a Japanese double bill of equally disturbing horror, I would recommend Cold Fish (2010), followed by Visitor Q (2001).
These movies of course should not really be double billed together because each one is quite a shock to the system on its own. Pace yourself before you debase yourself.
Thanks for making videos eh.
9:24 how I felt watching that part, lmao!. Turns out sam neill was actually slapping her? He actually added context on it, he said it was the first time he ever slapped anyone… which is certainly interesting.
Yes, truly insane, but damn she is beautiful.
Great timing, I just discovered this film the last month , instant favorite. Don’t know how this one flew under the radar
I saw this for the first time this year and spent most of the runtime being really sad it wasn’t what I expected… but in the last 15 minutes or so I was grinning like an idiot and having an absolute blast. Somehow it just clicked for me right at the end, can’t stop thinking about it.
You should watch another Żuławski film The devil from 1972 or Diabeł in the native tongue. Just like this one its complete madness but with a bit of period drama added to it
Damn youve been watching some of my favs lately! Love hearing your thoughts on then :)
Zulawski in top form. Isabelle Adjani must have taken a long time to come back to her senses after this experience but she undoubtedly left a lasting mark on cinema history with this performance.
I absolutely love this film! Best breakup movie ever!
Please watch The First Omen. There's an amazing and primal homage to this movie, and Nell Tiger Free knocked it out of the park.
i just watched this for the first time 5 minutes ago...im gonna be thinking about this one for a while
I prefer this directors first film, but this movie rocks.
bros finally watching my favorite film of all time 😭
This film is SOOOO FUCCKIIIING GOOOOD! The cinematography and everything is just brilliant.
there's nothing quite like Possession
Wwwhhooooaaa James is reacting to possession. Get ready for a ride. I watched this movie when I was about 6 or 7 years old and it stuck with me ever since.
Sam Neill is a horror icon.
The part at the end that sticks in my mind is when the little kid drowns himself in the tub
funny ass video man, im dying of laughter hashsahsa
Good old Andrej "what the fuck are audience expectations?" Zulawski...
I watched this film randomly late one night (many years ago) in my new shitty no-bedroom apartment just after my ex and I split up. I needed a drink, a shrink, and an exorcism afterwards. Zulawski was a maverick filmmaker and had a keen eye for beautiful, fierce actors. He was also married to the immortal Sophie Marceau. What a life!
great directed and acted underrated horror gem
"57 seconds ago"
rad.
One of my top 10 horror movies. This and Eraserhead demand multiple watches to digest it, but it's such a great trip to take. My first watch of this was much the same as yours, I was enthralled and could not look away for even a second. Everything about this film is done at the highest levels and it's not something that can be forgotten. It was pretty difficult to see in America, and the US theatrical cut here was only about 90 minutes, not the 2+ hours of the original cut. A lot still don't know about this movie, but I think it's absolutely brilliant and I'm glad you watched it!
This movie definitely is crazy and nothing what I was expecting based on the title. Not even sure what exactly happens in it to be honest, though you could make plenty of guesses, and the end of the movie seems to be the city being bombed, probably to try and kill the thing and/or the doppelganger (been a while since I watched this and not that easy to follow in your abbreviated UA-cam version so I don't remember if the doppelganger is the thing). You should watch another movie by this same director named On the Silver Globe, that I'd say feels even more alien. It was filmed several years before Possession, but only came out in 1988 due to censorship (in Poland, and the guy moved later I guess, which is why Possession is a joint French and West German one). It's always cool finding a movie that just makes you think "how did they do that", especially if it's an older movie where they would have less high tech to work with, and especially if you're a filmmaker like you are and still are blown away. Kalatozov is another director that did that for me in a few of his movies. Namely Cranes are Flying and I Am Cuba. And you also brought up Eraserhead again, and so I'll reiterate that you should watch Inland Empire, also by Lynch, that might one up some movies in that crazy/surreal aspect.
I keep trying to get my friends to triple feature this with Antichrist and Marriage Story. No takers.
Are you gonna watch the Fallout trailer? I know you played 4 and it seems like you liked it and this trailer is absolutely GLORIOUS
Hey James. Please react to Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman’s “Wag The Dog”, from 1997.
Damn James, you need to watch Highway 61, that's a film makers film, you'd love it.
If you want more Sam Neill goodness you gotta watch Event Horizon and In the Mouth of Madness!
Hey James, it's Berlin. Where you thought the guy kicked a head, he was standing next to the Berlin Wall.
Have to highly recommend his other film On The Silver Globe which is also mind bending and fantastic
HUG. Fun flick. One of a kind. Now watch Nil By Mouth.
