It’s important for all residents in areas for potential flooding to follow the instructions of state and local officials, and to monitor local radio or TV stations for updated emergency information. Individuals should monitor NOAA Weather Radio and their local news for updates and directions provided by their local officials.
If you encounter a flooded roadway, don’t attempt to pass through water - turn around, don’t drown.
Don’t drive or walk through flood waters. It only takes a small amount of water to move people or vehicles.
Be prepared to take detours and adjust your route due to road closures if there is standing water.
Don’t put yourself at risk; follow the instructions of local officials - and if told to evacuate, do so immediately.
Download the FEMA mobile app at www.fema.gov/mobile-app for weather alerts, safety tips, shelter information, and disaster resources in English and Spanish.
Get to know the terms used to identify floods. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding.
• A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.
• A Flash Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flash flooding.
• A Flash Flood Warning is issued when flash flooding is imminent or occurring.
• A River Flood Watch is issued when river flooding is possible at one or more forecast points along a river.
• A River Flood Warning is issued when river flooding is occurring or imminent at one or more forecast points along a river.
Discuss with your family what to do if a flood watch or warning is issued.
Remember, those in areas potentially affected by flooding should be familiar with evacuation routes, have a communications plan, keep a battery-powered radio handy and have a plan for their pets. Individuals should visit www.ready.gov or www.listo.gov to learn these and other preparedness tips for floods.
