  • TEA’s Commissioner Mike Morath spoke at the Texas Committee on education about considering banning cell phones in classrooms across the state.
However, in light of multiple recent online threats targeting schools, some are questioning if this is a safe decision.
Morath spoke about many things at the meeting, ranging from academic readiness to new state testing, but a suggestion he made to the committee about completely banning cell phones has mixed reactions throughout Central Texas.
“Cell phones are extremely harmful for student learning and if it were in my power I would have banned them in all schools in the state,” Morath said.

What if it’s an emergency? And don’t say the school phone cause there’s one or two of those amongst the 100’s or 1000’s of students.

As far back as 2018, 2019,, the teachers REQUITED cell phones in class rooms IN SPITE OF the well know negative effects on development. Duh. Now all of a sudden they're forbidding them? It's stupid and silly because I think they just don't want to have any video evidence of problematic behavior by staff that makes it out. Happened to a good friend, and guess what? Zero consequences to dicumentwd abuse of a student.
