      Except the rally winner stopped racing Saturday morning and didn't deserve the most points. The system did exactly what it was supposed to. It gave the most points to the driver who performed all 3 days. This Rally would have been trash after Saturday morning if the Sunday points weren't on offer.

    • @rjung_ch

      @@ruzaroosyou have a great point. Agree with you. Not as exciting for the spectators but he wanted the win. And since he's not a full time driver, it makes no huge dent with the others.

      Who should EP have raced against after Taka went off? Rallying is not just showing off it is about who keeps it together and brings the car home fastest overall.@@ruzaroos

    • @lesser9628
      @lesser9628 7 місяців тому +11

      @@ruzaroos I agree with you that this was the purpose of the new points system; it's just that I believe that purpose is deeply flawed. It effectively re-defines a rally into a different sport than what I and many others fell in love with - it goes against the ethos of rally's history. I think it's a very artificial attempt to induce short-burst excitement, at the expense of the competition's sporting merit. To be more succinct, I think the winner and the person who takes home the most points needs to be the person who finishes every stage in the shortest overall time - that is as close as it gets to "sacred."

      On the other hand the points represent the amount of work they had to put in - Lappi was starting behind and later it was easy to control with minute ahead - Evans pushed all days and car was okay - Neuville and Fouraux with similar point score also makes sense. I don't cry about points because Lappi always has his Sweden winner title attached to him from now onwards but nobody remembers the points

      @@Akash-uq8wg I guess a lot of it depends on luck whether the drivers end up just few seconds apart when fighting on Sunday.
      The Hyundai's fell short in the first stages of the day already, so it killed some major fights of the day.
      I still wonder if it was about the preparation Toyotas did in arctic or do Hyundais suffer from smth more chronic. We'll see in next events.
      One more point on Lappi, and its a nice example of how points depend upon work put it, if Lappi actually pushed on final day as well, he had the chance of scoring the highest points,
      but the reality is, it would have been too risky for Lappi (exactly because the win itself counts more than points for him at this exact moment) -
      the old system relied more on the luck aspect (you somehow get into lead and hold it through SUnday and get more points for that while not doing that much actual work).
      ANyway, not defending the new system too much, but it's still usable, and somewhat interesting.

    Respect to Elfyn for sharing his perspective on the points system; I'm worried that WRC is going to enter the same pitfall that NASCAR did here in the States changing their scoring system and race format. Both motorsports have a small yet loyal and devoted audience, and throwing them under the bus in order to court casual viewers just results in both demographics becoming disinterested.

    • @lesser9628
      @lesser9628 7 місяців тому

      I was thinking about this comparison today and completely agree with your points. If I remember correctly, Nascar said their playoffs system was meant to create something like "game 7" moments. The problem is that if you contrive every race to have a game 7 moment, they are no longer game 7 moments by nature because they happen all the time. The ability to have a special race is immediately neutered by the nature of the rules, while devaluing the competition itself. I think your comparison of the fan bases is very valid too. WRC doesn't necessarily have casual fan appeal - and that's fine, but they can't afford to alienate the existing fan base to find fictional casual viewers.

    As always, great coverage from dirtfish. Thanks everyone on the team!
    The new points system is terrible. The FIA should focus on simplifying things to attract new spectators, not making things more complicated. Try explaining to an outsider that the winner of the event does not get the most points - it makes absolutely no sense. The fact that there's points for the power stage was already bad enough...
    If the organization wants to give an incentive for drivers to push on more stages, they should give them an advantage related to their stage results as the event progresses. Something to do with tire choice, starting order, etc. Even some sort of BOP (based on ballast and/or hybrid boost) would be better than the current point system chaos.
    In my opinion, points should be based *only* on the final standings.

    Lappi is in the record books and has the trophy. He's a part-time driver. The points don't matter, which is why he drove like a grandmother after Katsuta crashed and got outscored by Evans. Having 3 cars crash out and being faster than the two snow plow drivers on Friday is not some titanic victory. He maintained a time advantage over 2/8 drivers clearing the snow on Friday, 3/8 of the field crashing out, and 2/8 driving a Ford 😂 This is not the rally to complain about the points system. The point system carried this rally after Katsuta crashed. The top 3 were separated by 2 tenths on the power stage because of the points system. Stage 16 and 17 were actually relevant because of the point system.

  • @ANDREWF891
    @ANDREWF891 7 місяців тому

    New points does encourage attacking on the last day, instead of saving tyres the whole Sunday.
    EP definitely didn't have confidence, due to his crashes last year, to push the whole rally.. once he was clear, he was always going to cruise to end..
    Where as Theirry was confident enough to push all through monte, and he gets to bank more points.
    I don't think the point values are fully correct, but the concept is working better than i thought.
    Plus rally is never a level playing field.. leader is either sweeping at a disadvantage, or clean road with advantage.. so first couple of days gives them a chance to sort themselves out, and then there is plenty to play for come Sunday
