I never played this as a kid, and clearly I missed out...but I gotta say, I freaking love the 5th generation art styles. The realism of today is great; but there's something that can never be emulated about the look of mid-90s games.

Dunno if that's what they mean by off-screen masks, but there is at least a hidden mask not visible on screen at 36:52 inside the hole as far as I remember.

Games Done Quick traditionally ended with Super Metroid back then, and in that game the planet you’re on explodes at the end and you must escape. There are some animals that helped Samus learn moves earlier in the game, and in that escape level they’re trapped in a side screen, if you free them they manage to escape the planet with you, but going to that screen and saving them takes a few seconds, which speed runners really care about. So there was a donation war set up to either take a few seconds and save the animals, or skip that and beat the game faster, jokingly phrased as “save the frames, kill the animals”, and whichever option got more donations is what the runner would do. Since it’s the finale of the event, it got a lot of attention, even early on, days before Super Metroid even happened the donations would start coming in to decide whether to save the animals or not. I think the event staff realized a couple years ago it was a little off putting to newcomers how much this was talked about, and they stopped ending the event with Super Metroid haha
To be fair, most of the employees at Naughty Dog in the late 90s left long before TLOU was made. Also, there were only about 8 people involved in making Crash 1.

I honestly don't understand people, grown men and women, who say the N Sane Trilogy (or Crash altogether) is too difficult. *I beat the original trilogy on my own when I was three. Years. Old.*

Nope. Bonus level boxes are just for extra fruit and lives. Bonus levels also give you save points, but they are not required for gems.

Probably, the prototype version of sunset vista was much longer--and harder--than the version we have now.
This was a killer run. I still can't get over the fact that the runner looks like Barry from the Game Grumps.
