I lived in the Dumbiedykes in Edinburgh in the fifties and it wasn’t a slum. We had a lovely flat with an inside toilet, but no bath we went to the public baths and had a lovely luxurious bath with loads of hot water. The view from our window was amazing. We looked on to Salisbury crags, we could hear the sheep on the slopes. We could see St. Margaret’s Loch and on a clear day, ships on the horizon. I used to sit on the window seat in the afternoon and read.
Edinburgh now has lost its soul and is merely for Students and tourists. I wouldn’t want to go back there.

And polish immigrants. Polish immigrants that snap out every job, housing, school place and GP place available. I was born and bred and in Gorgie, a warm homely community with its old streets, neighbours looking out for each other, amazing sense of community and felt almost detached from Edinburgh in its own right.
Now? It’s like Warsaw. Polish everywhere. Long established businesses now Polish Bookshops, Polish libraries, Polish supermarkets, polish nail bars, polish book shops. They don’t integrate, they refuse to speak English (although it’s okay for our hard pressed teachers to give their kid’s special attention in the classroom though to teach them English because the ignorant rude parents don’t) older people from Gorgie are lonely as all their neighbours are now Poles who simply won’t speak to anyone that isn’t Polish. It’s sad and it’s true.
      Edinburgh: the capital of Poland.

What is very noticable is the smoke pollution. The buildings were filthy. That's not to mention the tobacco haze that was ever present in most entertainment venues. The slums of the Canongate, Greenside and the Dumbiedykes were appalling. Pubs closed at 10 pm, in some parts of the city disgorging a drunken rabble into the streets. Nowhwere open on a Sunday. Even the swings in the park were chained up to stop kids playing on them. Many tenement flats were freezing cold with no bathrooms and neighbours shared toilets in the stair. Unfortunately many younger people have no appreciation of what pre fifties life was really like. Long working hours with a six day week. Very little in terms of health and safety. A couple of weeks holiday in the Summer , ie the Trades Fortnight. Even Christmas day was a normal working day. Yes some things were better such as less traffic etc, but from my perspective of age todays city is much better than those dark days. If people were really honest what they actually miss is their youth.

Did people really talk so posh back then? Or is that just necessary for like TV people and reporters and things. Because that just sounds way overdone.

Just on films and radio, then on TV. I remember as a pre school kid wondering if it was the Queen doing the voice on Andy Pandy etc!

People didn’t talk like that. As you remarked, Those voices were for television and for newsreaders. Local accents were unacceptable and frowned upon.

Why does the commentar have to speak with an English accent?

Possibly because he is English? It's not a crime, you know.

I agree Wendy. It's horrid now. Even 10 or 15 years ago it was much nicer. It's been ruined.
