    Lol...the captain won the reel! I've been on this boat so many times, particularly last year. The guy's super entertaining.

    When I was a kid we would catch huge Yelloweye in Puget Sound , it has been closed for decades for all Rockfish.

    ...Well we used them...Some folks used the dabs...Some went with frozen mackerel, while others went with jigs and swmbaits...Everybody was hooking up!

    So they fill up the bait well with Dabs then use drop bait Lures? Dabs are super table fare but are better Bait! Wondering why they weren't used?

    I’d be pretty mad if they fueled up during the trip

      Well on a Bay Area trip we are on the boat basically from before sunrise until nearly dark....So we get plenty of fishing time in, but the skipper also needs to be prepared for the next day....The fuel dock is actually several miles from port and we pass that dock coming and going from the fishing grounds....The whole operation takes 20 minutes max, so its no big deal....

    The fishing trip is a thumbs up but the video didn't give a lot of info about catching/hooking the Lings. It was more of an advertisement so it's a thumbs down. I use Chris landing out of Monterey and do very well.

    Hey Cal, Any recommendations for a good all purpose rod/reel/line combo for salmon/rock cod/ling, if that exists?

    • @jasonramey196
      @jasonramey196 7 років тому +1

      I have an ugly stick spinning rod

    • @koogleyou557
      @koogleyou557 6 років тому

      If I may you can go w 1 reel but youll need 2 rods. Salmon if you are trolling w a weight release & a cannonball 2-2.5 lbs an affordable salmon rod is the cousins 8 ft. A better rod is a calstar about 300.00. My favorite reel for both and I have 12 saltwater reels is theshimano torium 16. You can load it w 50 lb braid which will handle both easily and more. Its a fantastic reel for the money my 14 is my go to for salmon but this holds more line. I like the phenix black diamond rod $$$ but its a bit stiff for lings and the weights youll need to jig. The trevalli is a great deal at about 100.00 for lings and rock cod. Shop around on line.

    I catch wait to go on a charter should be going some time this month! Anybody got any suggestions on what lures I should use ?
    I’m going for rock fish and lingcod mostly

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  4 роки тому +1

      Wes here- Cal and I have very different approaches on the salt. For lings, Cal likes bait, I prefer artificial lures. Both work. I always throw bars. The P-Line Hex bar is a good go to. I also tend to go a little more finesse with light tackle on bass gear. The Shinano Lucanus jig on a swim bait rod is one of my favorites. Big swimbaits on lead heads are also a solid choice. Pick something you have confidence in and experiment.
      If you are interested in a great story, ask Cal about the first time he invited me on a Ling charter.

      Been out of Morro Bay once. The worst trip I've ever had. The whole crew was pretty much sucking the balls off of their regulars and intentionally mis-gaffing fish for the new guys. Fuck 'em.

      It's worse up in Eureka. I usually take charters in Socal. Granted more people, but I'm not ready to spend $120-$230 for a possible skunk and very limited time dropping line.

    What charter skipper fuels up in front of his customers? He is either using their paid time or trying to make you feel bad about the cost.Either way, it's the one reason NOT to use this operator. He is a disgrace.

    • @FHSTackle
      @FHSTackle  8 років тому +3

      I've been on lots of charter boats the fueled up in front of clients....In the case of Bay Area charters the fuel dock is a long run from port but on the way to the fishing grounds, so it's pretty common practice here in Norcal, but I see your point....

      Every boat Ive been on out of the bay does this so are they ALL disgraceful??? Quang is 1 of my 2 go to charters, Donny is the other. Quangs got over 30 yrs experience and he got me a 35 lb halibut this yr so Id consider being a little more judicious with the criticism.

    • @mikeshuck2760
