I agree with this video and I’ve struggled with it myself. I also don’t like how so many people just respond on social media if someone likes something with a “That’s terrible” or “I don’t like it.” I also loathe the written by an AI “criticism.”

There was actually a movie where the writers admitted they used AI to make the script and AI in Hollywood is one of the main reasons behind the writer's strike. But one movie doing that and a strike shouldn't be an excuse for people to just accuse every bad movie as "written by AI" now. That's actually quite offensive because it implies they can't accept human errors and screenwriters can make errors too.

    0:18-0:40 - Exactly! I know the feeling.
When I made a positive comment about TLTS version of Lola Bunny on your character profile on Bugs Bunny, there was a person who replied to me saying that TLTS version Lola will never make a comeback & acted as if everyone hated that version of the character. (If that version is so hated, how come TLTS version of Lola is a playable character in the mobile game Looney Tunes: World of Mayhem?) I hated that comment so much that I deleted my original comment & reuploaded my comment again, free of that awful reply.
Still, thank you for answering. I really needed to hear this response. I really need to learn how to be more confident in loving the things I love, regardless of whether people give me a hard time or they seem to misinterpret a movie/TV show that I really love.

I've gotten to the point where if someone posts something I disagree with, I mostly just shrug and scroll by. Not worth getting into an argument with someone over it. And if someone replies to a Tweet of mine trying to start something, I just don't respond back. Because more often than not, the other person will just move on and likely forget about me and what I wrote anyway.
The same goes for political discussions. The amount of times I've seen people write something asinine or twisting something to fit their personal agenda is too many to count and I don't want to waste my time arguing with people about certain topics, no matter how strongly I feel about the subject and especially since I know it will be like shouting at a brick wall.

I always get attacked every single time I say an opinion. I got lots of unpopular opinions too but when it comes to popular opinions, people who have an unpopular opinion on it will attack me saying I'm wrong. And every time I look at replies to other opinions, they would say "facts". It honestly kinda hurts me every time someone says "facts" to another opinion that's different from mine because it means they think the opposite opinion is invalid and I'd be one of those people with that opposite opinion. I think this online comedian who trashed Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka was either the Nostalgia Critic, Angry Joe, or Cinema Sins.
I used to watch those channels back in the 2010s and for a while I thought it was funny mainly because they were reviewing stuff from their childhood and had creative skits. But once they started to review much more recent stuff from my childhood years, I immediately disengaged and stopped following their channel. It seemed to me like they only had one thing to say about everything; to only nitpick and trash everything they touched.
This is how uninformed opinions are like today. People don't really make their own opinions but follow other people instead of giving things a fair shot. And since the internet is at its strongest when everyone is negative to each other, trying to talk positively on something is just frowned upon. This isn't healthy nor is it a good sign of where society may be heading in.
Case in point, the live action Dr. Seuss movies from the early 2000s. The Jim Carrey Grinch and Mike Myers Cat In The Hat. Looking back on those movies, they did not age well in my opinion and everything looks rather dated. Not to mention certain actors who have changed since then it now feels like an eye sore rewatching those movies.
I get it that some people today still have nostalgia and attachments to those movies and that's fine. I can look back to that era of movies and clearly say that it was a post-Batman and Robin era where more movie adaptations were making some questionable creative choices. While we did get some hits like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, it also led to stuff like the Scooby Doo, Fat Albert, and Garfield movies from that time. Something that slowly changed once the MCU started to get off the ground.

I do think there are people who don't like Wish for legitimate reasons but then others take it a little too far by repeating the "AI" argument or posting one too many videos on the Asha/Starboy deleted scene. Like, well maybe that would have been interesting but two things. 1) Star Boy was supposed to be a younger version of her grandfather which would have made it feel a bit creepy. I also wouldn't mind seeing another Disney romance in the future but still... 2) What's done is done. Sorry you didn't like the movie but you can't hang on to what ultimately wasn't. After all, the message of Meet the Robinsons was "Keep moving forward."
I'm not gonna lie. I do feel a bit in that boat because there are plenty of movies I like that others don't, which is fine. And yeah. Some hate are going to hate certain movies for understandable reasons but then other people get really vehement about it to the point where they make it sound like the movie committed the worst kind of atrocity imaginable. Can we just agree to disagree peacefully without acting like just a mere mention of saying "I like the Phantom Menace" is the end of the world?

I really only have one movie I refer to as a guilty pleasure, mostly because I'm baffled by my own love for it: Cats (2019).
It's an objectively terrible movie. Everything about it is pure nightmare fuel. And yet, I've watched it at least 5 times and until a month or two ago, it was the last movie I'd seen in theaters since before the pandemic. I have no shame in loving anything else I enjoy but Cats... Shame and confusion are appropriate reactions to how that movie makes me feel.
But in all seriousness, I was watching an Underworld retrospective the other day and I really wish more people would take the "not better or worse, just different" approach to media analysis they took in that video. We can enjoy fine art AND cheap trash. I don't need or want my schlocky horror to do the same things as my refined Oscar-bait. I love them both for their own reasons.
This is also why I generally don't rank "best" movies. I try to have my top 5 favorites set so I'm ready to talk about them but if I start trying to rank the movies I think are the best ever made (which have almost no real correlation to what I consider to be my favorites), I end up trying to figure out what the hell I even mean if I were to say Baby Driver is better than The Silence of the Lambs or John Wick is better than The Social Network. They're such wildly different works of art that the comparison is all but useless.

Even though I respect everyone's opinions, I do wish they would try to be a bit more respectful themselves when it comes to expressing their own. Especially when it comes to expressing an opinion that I might not agree with. Say for example, I really enjoyed the film Wish, but I come across somebody who didn't enjoy it. They should say something like: "I'm going to be honest with you, I really didn't enjoy the film very much. But that's just my opinion, if you enjoyed it, then fair enough. Unless they say “You’re bad and stupid for liking a bad movie or hating a good movie”, then it’s obvious they’re not talking about you.
It gets tiring to constantly qualify a film criticism with “It’s my opinion” or “It’s ok if you like it even though I don’t”.
A critic’s job isn’t to confirm your biases or coddle you.
It’s better to be direct and to the point than to add a bunch of redundant filler words like “If I’m going to be honest” or “But that’s just my opinion”.

Granted the movie definitely has problems and I would never consider it to be one of the greatest war movies ever made, but to be perfectly honest, I never felt that the movie main intentions was to an accurate representation of the attack on Pearl Harbor. You wanna know something that really gets to me about the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory backlash? Of all the people, Gene Wilder added fuel to the flames, calling it nothing more than a soulless remake made just for the money. It's hard to imagine someone that genuinely nice could feel this way, but I think he might have actually been spiteful over the fact that Burton refused to let him reprise his role as Wonka.

    • @MrCoat
      @MrCoat  14 днів тому +8

What I always found odd about that was that he didn't create the character. While I understand he felt a certain connection to the role, others should be free to adapt the book and do their own spin on it and in Burton's case, he had the approval of Roald Dahl's family.
In contrast, Gene Wilder was supportive of Mel Brooks turning "The Producers" into a Broadway musical, went to the opening night show and complimented Matthew Broderick for taking on the role of Leo Bloom.
It sort of reminds me of when the trailer for the new "Jumanji" movie was released and people immediately declared making the movie an insult to Robin Williams. But nobody seemed to ask what Chris Van Allsburg, who came up with the whole idea for "Jumanji", thought of "Welcome to the Jungle." Apparently, while he had little creative involvement with the movie, he still liked the direction they went with it.

Being nice doesn’t mean being a pushover who’s not allowed to complain.
Granted, it does feel hypocritical considering how Gene Wilder’s film deviated heavily from the book, but sometimes deviating heavily from the book can be a good thing.
      Sometimes!
I saw the film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in theaters, and my sentiments align with Wilder.
      Yes, Gene Wilder’s Wonka wasn’t a saint, but he wasn’t a mean-spirited weirdo like Depp’s Wonka was.
Depp’s Wonka was more awkward than charming.
It’s like Depp was trying too hard to be funny, and it fell flat.
Yes, Tim Burton’s adaptation is more faithful to the source material than the 1971 film was, but that doesn’t make it a good film.
It’s like how people loved Kubrick’s “The Shining” despite deviating heavily from the book, but people hated “The Shining” TV series despite being more faithful to the book.

I freely admit I tend to have some unpopular opinions about certain movies, usually if I like or don't like something, but often times if I just don't think it's as great or as bad as everyone else does. For instance, I freely admit that I'm not the hugest fan of Princess Mononoke. It's still a good movie, but I don't consider it Miyazaki's best or my favorite. And there are people online who would consider even that opinion blasphemy of the highest order, even though I never said that I hated it or that I think it sucked. The jokes about “Wish” being written by AI are related to the nonsensical, grammatically incorrect lyrics like “Watch out world, here I are” in the song “I’m A Star”.
It seems like the word “are” was added just to rhyme with “star” despite how awkward and grammatically incorrect it sounds.
In fact, ALL the lyrics of “I’m A Star” represent what happens when you sacrifice grammar and coherency for painful rhymes.
Furthermore, there is this redundant verse in “This is the Thanks I Get”:
🎶 I let you live here for free 🎶

    Well, yeah, Magnifico.
Letting people live in your home for free evidently means you don’t have to charge them rent. 🤦‍♀️
