  • DIY alcohol inks? Did you think the only way to do it was to cut up markers to get that ink first and then let them soak in alcohol for hours? In this video I explore Jacquard's Basic Dyes to see if they can make viable alcohol inks. Don't miss a minute of this so that you benefit from tips and tricks throughout! 😊💕

= For this piece I used the following:
    ▪️Jacquard’s Basic Dyes : amzn.to/2PE6oyX
    ▪️ Piñata Clean Up Solution : amzn.to/2RDivJN
▪️91% Isopropyl Alcohol (much cheaper at your local drugstore, grocery store, etc.)
    You might also want:
    ▪️Piñata Claro Extender : amzn.to/2J87R9S (4 oz. bottle)
▪️I strongly recommend this “Exciter Pack” of 9 gorgeous Piñata alcohol inks : amzn.to/2G2tkAB

    🔹This was done on matte .005 Dura-Lar by Grafix : amzn.to/2HbLYVZ
    🔺For Canadians: amzn.to/2qw88eN
    = SUPPLIES =
    ▪️One ounce (30ml) mixing cups : amzn.to/2KN0SUC
▪️10 ml needle tip bottles (pack of 10 with mini funnels) : amzn.to/2F4sKW8
    - Pack of 10 (bottles alone ... no funnels) :
    amzn.to/2RD4wnm
    - Pack of 20 bottles : amzn.to/2RHvzht
    - Cheaper price but will take weeks to arrive : amzn.to/2qvlhW7
▪️The squeeze bottles that had the Baja Blue alcohol ink (with the white cap):
    - for a pack of 6: amzn.to/2qNs517
    - for a pack of 12: amzn.to/2qLBrKs
    = SEALING / VARNISHING =
To seal an alcohol ink piece I use a museum quality spray by Krylon: Kamar Varnish. Unlike most spray varnishes and acrylic sprays, it will not react with the alcohol inks. 🔹Here is a link: amzn.to/2jGh3KO
If done on something paper thin like Duralar, the piece can be framed under glass or acrylic without being sprayed. Avoid placing your alcohol ink work where it will be exposed to direct sunlight however. Some inks can fade in the sun.
A UV Protecting spray can help minimize fading.
Thank you in advance for watching the videos, sharing them, commenting and leaving a thumbs up. Your kindness helps my channel continue and it is all greatly appreciated! May the alcohol inks, resin, and paints be kind, and may the pours be with you. 😊💕

Very interesting experiment! I'd love to see a video on coloring resin with those dyes. I'm sure they will work fantastic for that as a lot of commercially available resin colorants are dye based. Yes, my first alcohol inks were made from butchered Sharpie pens. They work fantastic but you need to use several pens if you want really vibrant deep colors. It's much easier and cheaper to buy the inks in an art supply store.

HI Myriam, It was funny watching the colors change, which by the way I think they came out really pretty. The circle one kind of reminds me of the rock painting. You most likely do have a lab in your studio. LOL. I would love to see more experiments on the making of your alcohol inks. So I hope you show us when you get the 99 percent alcohol and maybe on a small canvas board, as it might show up on the paper differencely. Great video and intriguing results. If you add the Claro Extender with the alcohol when you dissolve the dye (or use only claro extender), you will get the brilliant color upon drying. You need the resin to keep the dye dispersed after your alcohol is gone. Give it a try?

Scotch Magic tape is the best for sealing off alcohol ink - on pretty much any surface. You get a beautifully crisp line - and it's worth the extra pennies imo. Saves you time and heartache over a lovely piece of work... Probs cheaper in long run than using clean-up, perhaps? 😘

I have to confess I'm a serial killer of sharpies......and when I went thru my first pack I confess I got another......but Judge me not, I was a desperate woman for alcohol inks at the time, I'm wondering if those granular bits left in this dye is not for texture or if they release a substance that will "set" the dye..... maybe the only thing that will dissolve them IS the denature alcohol, in any case, I really enjoyed the joy you have when creating....thank you!

Since most dyes are mixed with some kind of hot solution, I wonder if you mixed the granules with some heated up alcohol if they'd dissolve better.
I bought the 10ml bottles off your list, and found that some of the plastic caps didn't have holes in them, so they wouldn't cover the metal tips. People should check them carefully before adding any inks into the bottles so that they can exchange them if they need to.

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  5 років тому

So sorry to hear about the bad bottle lot Blaiz. I pray that was an exception.
I’d have to do some research on heating alcohol… Part of me (all of me?) feels a little afraid to do something like that (fumes?). 😁 I do enough dangerous stuff in this “lab”😂... I should limit what I put these sorry asthmatic lungs of mine through. 😉💕

  • @iartistdotme

Maybe the grains are from not heating the liquid to dissolve them first. If that is the case, the grains may dissolve over time if a little more alcohol was added and covered so not to evaporate. Just a thought. I was worried about your pretty nails when you used the clean-up solution but they didn't seem to mind. Enjoyed todays' great experiment from your lab!

Fascinating! I was so puzzled and intrigued about the color shift, I liked the colors you were getting but WHY were you getting them. Thanks for continuing to experiment to get to at least some of the answer....was also wondering if perhaps it was heat related? No, Your Honor, I have NEVER murdered a Sharpie in my life! But have tried to create some alcohol inks using dye ink re-inkers among other things. It's hard to get enough concentrated color. But I've got some powdered dye for dying fabric for rug hooking....hmmmmm....also have some Brusho powders.........hmmmmmm I see a play day coming up!

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  5 років тому

I honestly think the color shift was due to a low concentration of the dye but there’s more testing to be done for sure. It does sound like there’s a lot of fun experimenting about to happen in YOUR lab too!
Definitely let me know if you get some fun results.
I have never tried Brusho and I am definitely curious about that! I love the effects you can get with water so I imagine, since alcohol is a liquid, it should activate the Brushos too???

  • @lindabailey776

Try letting it dry naturally instead of drying it with the blow dryer , I find this changes the cemetery , and alcohol drys very quickly anyway .Just a helpful hint .

  •  5 років тому

Mixing completely can be achieved with a small ultrasonic cleaner, just place a sealed container of your mix in there and it completely dissolves. Be careful not to use a cleaner with a heater as alcohol is flammable. Their cleaner is denatured alcohol that's why it's so strong. Another effect similar to the hair dryer but doesn't affect color saturation is using compressed air at different pressures, in the seventies airbrush world they were known as freak drops!! Have fun and be well!!!

You can make your own blending solution as well. Just add a few drops of vegetable glycerine to 99% alcohol and you’re good to go. 🧚🏼‍♀️

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  5 років тому

Oh Judy, that is unfortunately not a true blending solution. That “formula“ has been around for years (since I first started working with inks) and it has led so many to believe that it is a good substitute.
If one’s goal is to thin their ink, just alcohol is probably better. The glycerine can actually prevent your inks from fully drying. That’s what glycerine does... it’s a humectant and lubricant. If you pour some out in a dish, it will just stay wet, never wanting to dry. 🙁 That is not what blending solution does or is supposed to do. Blending solution’s job is to thin your ink in color strength but not in binding ability or sheen. Glycerine has absolutely no binding ability... if anything it does the opposite.
If you pour just blending solution on a surface, it will dry ... slower than ink but it will dry. It will also stick to the surface, be shiny and not at all slippery or sticky. It contains a resin like substance which ensures that.
My guess is that someone looked at the ingredients of blending solution, saw the words polypropylene glycol and thought “oh, like glycerol (aka glycerine) so glycerine should work”. Unfortunately the actual ingredient is polypropylene glycol methyl ether... a totally different animal... not a humectant or lubricant but a solvent used for inks and paints as a carrier.
I’m sorry for the science lesson... I just don’t like to see people be misinformed. Especially not viewers of my channel 😄. I feel a responsibility to you all to make sure you have the best information possible. 😘💕
I hope that helps clarify a bit.

Oh my goodness! I'm not done watching your video yet...but, I have a q. I can't even begin to spell the other alcohol lol. But you said they add poisen to it so people don't drink it. Is that to say some drink isopropyl alcohol?!?! I can't even fathom that! Lol

    • @MyriamsNature
      @MyriamsNature  5 років тому +2

      Hi Valerie!
There are different types of alcohol among them isopropanol, methanol, and ethanol.
Ethanol is grain alcohol (think vodka and whiskey for example)… If it was sold without being treated (denatured) it would be a very cheap way of getting really strong alcohol that you theoretically could drink. At that strength, it would still be dangerous however, and oddly enough the government would be unhappy because it wouldn’t be taxed like the types of alcohol we drink.
For these reasons (not taxed and potentially dangerous) poison is added to prevent people using pure ethanol as an alcohol to drink. More often than not the poison smells horrible.
Methanol is very toxic and not drinkable (If I’m not mistaken it’s actually sometimes used as the poison to denature ethanol… Don’t quote me on that ... I am not 100% sure😁). Isopropanol (or isopropyl alcohol) is also not drinkable. In general alcohols of all types are solvents so can be used for thinning products, cleaning, etc. which is why I assumed that I could substitute isopropyl alcohol for the smellier denatured ethanol.
I hope that answered your question. 😊💕

Did not like it at first but you kept on going and i could see endless possibility's. Thinking about the granules i wonder of you left it over night they might dissolve. It would not matter to me now because you did it and i know what to expect. Your enthusiasm is infectious.

I am not 100% sure. Like alcohol inks I do know that these dyes are not lightfast. That being said, if displayed in an area that doesn’t get direct sunlight they should remain just fine. 😊

Hi Claire. I noticed that too but then saw the explanation on the jar. The dyes are sold by weight not volume. It seems that different dyes have different weights ... the levels were not all the same at all (e.g., little yellow, much more black). I’ll try to remember to mention that the next time I use these in a video.
I ended up loving that they sell it in a bigger jar because it makes it much less messy to scoop out what you need... you can easily tap off any extra in the safe little “bubble” of the jar until you have the right amount on your stick/spoon etc. 😊💕

I wonder if the heat from your heat gun changed the properties of the die/alcohol mixture, thereby changing the color? This was a great experiment. Have you ever tried something similar with India Ink, or other liquid ink? Have you ever use India Ink? I've never tried it, so please don't think I'm recommending that you run out and buy some. BUT, if you happen to own some, I'd be interested to know what you think.

Laura Buehler thanks Laura, I was wondering the same thing. I have the hydrus or radiant inks? Cant remember off the top of my head? I haven’t used them yet?! I finally got out of a ongoing “funk” after 3 major neck surgeries in 4 years!! I started watching watercolor tutorials and decided to buy these inks, BUT in the meantime I found cardmaking tutorials too?! So for the last year all I’ve been doing is buying ( which is time consuming when ur looking for the best deals) organizing and watching tutorials! I’m so excited to start creating with all my new stuff!! But I don’t think my inks will work because they’re watercolor inks?! PS I have found some really cool things on AliExpress! Shipping can take anywhere from 2-5 weeks to receive ur orders, but shipping is usually free! Thanks for sharing!😊 Liz

Hi you two. I have India inks and have mixed them with alcohol on a few occasions in order to make fractals (here are the videos : ua-cam.com/video/hZy4kGqoJq8/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/u2SgW9n6fV4/v-deo.html ).
I’ll be honest, it never occurred to me to use the resulting mix as an alcohol ink. 😅🤔 It does sound like fun and absolutely worth trying! As for the other inks, my thought is that if they are too watery it might present a problem because alcohol inks do prefer as close to 100% alcohol as you can get. But, if you have some, it’s certainly worth trying a drop or two to see.
I will add India inks to my lab experiments! 😁💕
Elizabeth, I am so very sorry you have had search inordinate physical challenges. That many surgeries had to have been very difficult. I pray that you are much healthier and stronger and that there is a happier future in store for your now! 🤗😊💕

I'm wondering if the heat is possibly making the color change. I am assuming that heat is being used. Lol, I guess I should watch the entire video before commenting. I've been watching and reading so much, and now I have too many ideas. I don't know where to start. 😂🎉

I am new to alcohol inks, but I have been dying fabric for a very long time. I have some basic dye that I am experimenting with to see if I can create my own alcohol inks. The results on glass and plexiglass are very vibrant. I am working on the ratio of dye to alcohol and then how much they can be diluted and still retain their color. If I am successful and I am allowed to join the face book group, I will post my results for viewing. Hope to be able to share the results with you soon.

Hello there it's seems to change colour after you blew it with the gun. So my question to you is, does the gun throw out cool or hot or warm air? If warm it maybe the reason it darken each colour. Got an idea for ya, in water colours you can use salt, for z special effects, so try to sprinkle salt and see what effect you get. I think it would be worth the try. Hmmmm Thanks fun to watch, very cool.......

Love me some experimenting of this sort. I have murdered many sharpies and made lots of my own inks, which have somehow evaporated down on their own. This doesn't bother me, as they're just more concentrated. I do try to keep the containers water-tight. I'm thinking that if you strain your dyes through a bit of cheesecloth, you can eliminate the grains, if that's the look you're after. And now I'm wondering about the old Rit dyes...hmmmm....Thanks, Myriam!

I feel a little out of place asking my question, but I did notice your nails are beautifully manicured (super cute accent nail on the thumb, btw) so I'm hoping you won't be too put off by me asking:
what can you tell me about alcohol inks for nail art?
I know there are plenty of products marketed by nail companies, but I feel like they are unnecessarily high priced & that I should be able to find more reasonable options either as DIY or just via different/non-nail sources. Thoughts???

i use regular kids markers cut em up and then pore some 80% of alcohol over it and it works..for more vibrant color use some little bit expensive markers..maybe ones from wish or something like that. Recently in my hand drop some to me unusual colors.. aquarelle colors in liquid state?? Yes, voter colors in a liquid state and they are very pigmented, so i thot to put some of theme in my homemade alcohol inks! With a little bit of luck, i can make some vibrant colors! But there is an issue about YUPO PAPER! Can anybody give me some alternative solution for this very expensive problem, I was thinking about foto paper i got a few pieces i will try, dos any glossy paper work or...?
