Why does a woman have to pay dowry in your culture? Is this not totally unjust and crippling to the woman? A man is supposed to find the money to settle down with his bride. Not the other way round.
In my religion, the groom and his family pay the 'mehr' to the bride. It is a special gift for her. She gets to keep it or use it. And the groom can offer as much as he he afford to give her and she may or may not agree.
Plus, the bride is not taken in as a 'slave' to serve her husband and in-laws.
She can demand a pre-marital contract before she even agrees to the marriage.
My mother was never asked to prepare any meal for my father when they got married. Her in-laws cooked for the whole family. And that was in the 1950's.
